Mine is a Yamaha Viking 700cc, fuel injected, 3 seats, wider than most, which is good and bad. Its sporty enough to be fun, but will work with the best of them. Its one of the few along side John Deere with the same type of transmission. Doenst have the typical Polaris style belt drive issues. Its been flawless so far.

This weekend I cooked up the last of the fawn backstrap from last year. I shot her in mid or late November last year. Man, was that sucker tasty and tender, even after being frozen for almost a year. Mmmmm mmmmmm!

Most of our plots are doing very well. WR is about 2 inches long so far, brassicas are deep.

WNYBuckHunter replied to growalot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I havent seen much at all for acorns at our place this year. Hickory and beech are loaded. -
I get to it just fine

CWD was brought up by growalot, when she was suggesting that the DEC could allow baiting in the high population areas.
-
I usually see one or two per season that still have spots in mid October, cant say as Ive ever seen any spots by early November though.

Is it possible for you to have a debate with someone without ending it with a bunch of deflection and some sort of personal attack?

We as hunters have the opportunity to express our opinions, but what happens is based on more than just us. Unfortunately the DEC is driven by politics, and not biologists and wildlife management focused people. Until that happens, we are at the whim of groups that speak the loudest, and not always those that speak for the best interests of everyone. Carrying capacity needs to take the primary role in management decisions, some areas are just not capable of holding large numbers of deer. After that, hunter satisfaction, landowner needs and issues, etc come into play. Most changes that need to be made to improve hunting and herd health in alot of areas are going to make someone mad, the DEC should be making changes that are effective, take the least amount away from everyone today, and have a positive effect for everyone in the long run.

On the farm I hunt, the two farmers rotate their corn and bean fields. When one area is in corn, it will be hot with action that year, when its in beans and the opposite end of the farm is in corn, the area with the beans dies right off after the beans are harvested, and the corn area gets hot. Most of the time, the corn doesnt come down until the last week or so of gun season. Beans will be gone before gun season starts. Once the corn is down, the deer spread out between the cut beans and the cut corn. I move a few stands each year to account for this. We leave others right where they are, the deer still use the bedding near the beans, and you can catch them funneling between that bedding and the corn.

I havnet played with it yet, but will be soon. Everything I hear is good, primarily that its a huge improvement over 8 or 8.1, both of which I know, just never really have been happy with. Im still using 7 for now. I wont have any issue moving over to 10.

I hung stands, cut lanes, access trails, etc the last 2 days. Yep its hot, just drink lots of water to stay hydrated and enjoy some AC at the end of the day.

Spent Yesterday back down at the farm. Trimmed out paths to all stands at one farm. Went over to the other farm and scouted out a spot for a new double set. We looked at two areas we thought might be good, but turned out not to be, so we headed up to the North end of the property, near the area that I had an encounter with one of the really big boys on the farm last season. I already have a stand up near there, but there was an area about 100 yards from that stand where I had placed a cam this year that was showing some really good pics, and I thought there might be a spot where we could get in there with a set. As soon as we pulled into the area, up jumped a nice buck. He had some mass on him and was out past his ears with a good size body. I figured from the quick look that he is at least 3, possibly older, but Id need a better look at him. He popped right out of a spot of heavy cover that I know the bucks tend to lay up in. We started looking around and I found a nice looking Hickory, that is surrounded by 5 smaller trees for good cover and breakup, so thats where we hung our set. I can see into part of the bedding area, and cut 4 lanes, 1 into thicker cover, 1 to a known travel corridor and two into the field on either side of the point of trees. Should be a great set. Next we went around and checked the plots, all are doing great. First heres the Rape, PTT, Sugar beet plot... The DeerAg plot... After we left, I went over to a friends house and ended up making a deal on a new trailer thats heavy duty enough to haul mid size tractors and other equipment. It was a pretty fun weekend, and now Im back to work. No Labor Day vaca for this guy... -
Again, its not about need.

Headed down to the farm this morning loaded up with 3 stands, 2 sets of climbing sticks and all of the goodies to go along with them. Once we got down there, we came up with the game plan. Add a second stand to a set we call the Poison Ivy Stand and swap the screw in steps for ladder sticks, Pull a stand out that we call the Junk Pile stand, check things with other stands, clean up lanes and start looking for a new place for a stand we call the corner stand. That stand and the Junk Pile Stand both sat at different points on an inside corner of a field. Its a hot bed of activity right now, and through hunting season when the field is in corn, but this year its beans. The area dies off a bit after the beans are cut, but is still a funnel type area for the deer. Neither of the two stands are in quite the optimal spot, and they are about 130 yards apart. We figure we can pull one and put the other in the ideal spot for the funnel, so thats what we will do. We also wanted to swap a stand out that has rusty cables, so that we can replace the cables on that stand. We ended up getting everything done but move the corner stand and trim out access paths to a few sets. We will get that done tomorrow. We are also going to head to the other farm, hang a new double set and trim lanes there. After tomorrow, we should be almost completely done getting the prep work done. My daughter and I in the Poison Ivy Stand. Always a great stand, with a long history of successful hunts. Hopefully she will film me putting one on the ground here this year. -
Happy Birthday Eddie!

Its not about saving a few thousand "second bucks" go back in the thread, its been explained a few times. Im not saying people should give up where they hunt now, but if they really want to take another deer for their freezer, then go to where the deer are. You never know, you just might find somewhere you really like to hunt thats new. Ive had to do it quite a few times before, it can be challenging, but thats half the fun of hunting.

Id say 3, and a nice deer. I dont think Id pass him, but thats just me.

Theres lots of state land in areas where DMPs are available. Expand your hunting a bit. If deer populations in your area are so low you cant take doe, do you think taking 2 bucks each year is doing you any favors? How will you like it when they put ARs in your area?

Ill check when I have the extra. Id love to put it in my safe. -
I agree with the Vortex Culver posted. If you want something a bit higher end though, take a look at the Viper HS line. Seriously awesome glass at a good price.

How is it a dead horse? Its a brand new regulation that hasnt even started yet. If you are tired of reading about it, stop opening the thread. Any further thread crapping posts will be removed.

We use a small variety. Tractors are a John Deere 5525, and John Deere 830. 2 different bush hogs, a 15 foot JD wing model for big areas and a 7 foot JD for in tight and heavy work. For breaking ground we have a King Cutter tiller, and a 10 foot tow behind disk. For rolling, we have a 10 foot cultipacker and a couple of 4 and 5 foot rollers. We use a tow behind lawn spreader or a push spreader, sometimes a bag spreader for spreading fert or seed. We use a Yamaha Viking side by side or a Polaris Sportsman 400 for alot of the spreading, rolling, spraying duties.
