  1. WTF is going on, Im in the Twilight Zone here! John, whatever update happend, sucks.
  2. I dont buy the moon theories any more. I probably wont be out at all this weekend, as I have my kids, but next week Ill be out and the weekend after that. Besides, I thought the "important moon" wasnt until the next full?
  3. You guys ever paroose ebay for antlers? A nice set of cutoffs can bring a pretty penny. Even a bunch of small ones sells pretty well. People buy them for crafts, etc all the time. I have a pair of cutoffs sitting on a shelf for decoration. Eventually Im going to use them to make a lamp or something else.
  4. It has nothing to do with being pessimistic, it has to do with fact and reality.
  5. I dont usually wear gloves when I stand hunt. I have one of those hand muff things you wear around your waist, then I put the hand warmer packs in it. My hands stay in there unless I need to do something, then I just do what I need to and put them right back in there. If I am still hunting, or coyote hunting, where I cant keep my hands in the muff, I have some mid weight goretex gloves.
  6. I thought it was illegal to have any arrows tipped with field points while deer hunting.
  7. You will never change the genetics of a wild herd. Forget about it.
  8. Its an allowed topic on the forum. Dont like it? Dont click on it.
  9. They have been popping up all over the farms I hunt. I noticed a bunch on Sunday that werent there Saturday.
  10. 60x strings, hands down. Custom made to your liking.
  11. I have one for ya, but not on hand at the moment. Ill post it tonight.
  12. Of course im responding to the cons, i agree with the pros lol. Do you need me to pat you on the back or something? Lol I dont understand your shot at facts, are you going to argue that grass isnt green as well? Also, if you dont understand the weather and deer pattern differences between early October and mid November, then I dont know what to tell ya. Make early October gun season for everyone and see what happens with success rates.
  13. Hows that viewer working for ya WesternNY?
  14. That 4th picture is a perfect comparison between a young and a mature buck.
  15. If the retention rate increases, it will be successful in that respect. If you move it to the first week of gun, you are removing the nice weather, more calm, pattern-able deer part of it. As far as the abused tags go, Im sure there were, but you cant judge an overall program by a few bad apples. You keep spouting the doom and gloom that was being pushed by certain groups to oppose the implementation of the youth season, even after the vast majority of it has already been proven wrong. These special youth seasons have been successful other places, and are nothing brand new, NY is not some sort of pilot program.
  16. Its not setting up false expectations. It gives them a chance to get a taste, in nicer weather, and calm deer. If they can harvest an animal without having to freeze to death to do it the first time, the thought is that the retention rate may prove to increase. Time will tell whether that part of it is true, but thats no reason not to say the program is currently successful at putting youth hunters in the field safely, and they are being successful at harvesting deer. The theories of it being an old school, opening day, war zone atmosphere has not held true. Sorry, but the naysayers have already been proven wrong. Why do you keep beating a broken drum?
  17. 2 weeks into the season, and its been pretty good so far. I first hunted the second day of the season, had a bunch of does out in one of our new plots, enjoying the fruits of our labor. I got busted drawing on a mature buck, and passed up this guy... Hunt 2 ended up with a perfect 30 yard shot and a nice young doe for the freezer... My other couple of hunts have added up to a ton of sightings, but no more mature bucks yet. My target buck is still around. Hopefully he will slip up for me while Im in one of the stands set to bust him coming in or out of his bedding. Some more random pics from my season so far...
  18. Lets see, last year the youth hunt happened, noone was injured or killed because of it, 1,411 deer taken, 61% of the eligible kids in the state participated, and not one game law violation was cited. Many of the kids took their first deer. All this despite less than perfect weather. Yeah, Id say it was a success. This years youth hunting weekend is drawing to a close, and I havent heard of any injuries or deaths this year either. I have seen many reports of, and pictures of successful youth hunters from across the state. I am looking forward to seeing this years stats, as we had generally, better weather this year. I just dont understand the naysayers, the proof is in the pudding.
  19. Oh, because of crap like this going on? http://money.msn.com/top-stocks/post--food-stamp-glitch-leads-to-wal-mart-stampede They should track down every welfare recipient that took part in buying up ridiculous amounts of stuff and prosecute each and every one of them for fraud or theft. Whatever one would apply, but we all know nothing will be done.
  20. It really boils down to what you want to do with them. Just want something to get in and out of the woods with? Electrics work well for that. Want to really haul stuff, or do food plots as well? Gas or diesel all day long. Personally, I wouldnt bother with an electric, but thats because Id want to use it for more than just getting around the property.
  21. Because that is whats important to me, its a goal I have set for myself. I have some younger bucks under my belt already and am not feeling the need to shoot them this year. I prefer hunting an older, wiser buck. Im not necessarily saying thats how it will be for me forever, but at this point in the game it is. That bad tasting thing is a farce as far as Im concerned. Ive eaten plenty of meat from mature deer, and it tastes the same to me. My ideal for this year is one deer in particular. Hes old, and we have 3 years of history. I just cant say that Id hold out if another mature (or my idea of mature) buck steps out. Im trying though.
