Sounds like your local bucks werent hitting the right target...

Sounds like you didnt bend at the waist my friend. Sounds like a great morning even with the miss.

Once you cut the muscles near the pelvic bone, the legs come open as much as youd ever need. I used to break the bone, but it is just as fast, and easier to not break it.

Awesome! Congrats to the successful huntress! Great video, as always!

Get back in there and hunt around them. Use their tactics to your own advantage. Sounds like you know the lay of the land better than they do anyway. Dont let it discourage you. I deal with similar things on the farms I hunt, other guys hunt there, so we work around them, and never tip them off to what exactly we are doing or seeing. Their setups always leave alot to be desired, so its not that hard to use them to our advantage. We took a couple of good bucks off the farm last year, right out from under their noses. Just remember this, if you were trying to "manage" the herd, but the farmer needs deer killed, he was probably not happy with the way you were doing it. His wants have to come first in that situation, as he makes a living from that land. As long as things are done legally of course. Everything we do is based off of filling those damage permits and making the farmer happy first and foremost. Our desire to manage and improve the hunting is second.

They are moving as normal at this point. Their thick coats have not grown in yet. I have been seeing deer move in the heat while out scouting fairly recently, and plenty of pics of them moving when its warm as well. The biggest thing to worry about with the warm temps, is skinning them and getting the meat chilled quickly after killing them.

The liver would be just about the last thing I ate raw.

I only had that happen one time. It was when I went down to the Southern Tier for Spring turkey 4 or 5 years ago. I drove down, and got about 3/4 of the way there and felt one coming on. I figured, no problem, theres a truck stop/resteraunt right around the corner from where Im going, Ill stop there first. I pulled in and the damn place had closed its doors since the last time I had been there. WTF was I gonna do then?!?!?! I drove up the road onto the state land and got a little ways up the hill and pulled off the road. I jumped out and used the truck as something to lean on while I took care of business. 3 trucks passed by while it was going on. I was still in the woods before it got light out.

I started with an 8 point rule, and have only ever deviated from it once. I had a reason to deviate from it. Now, I have an age based rule (3.5 or older), which will probably be as far as I go with the rules, unless something drastic changes and I end up with access to fully managed land. Maybe I am missing out on having a bunch of small bucks under my belt, but its my choice. Nobody forced it upon me, so I am 110% fine with it.

Yep, my daughter did the blood trailing on that one too, even though we knew where it was. I take her to track them whenever possible. -
Belo, you should look into the bed hunting thing, youd be surprised how it actually works. Hopefully within the span of this season Ill have the pictures and specific buck on the wall to show for it.

Tell ya what, you cover the cost, Im in. Id give anyone that wanted to hear it, a full review on the experience, difficulty level, etc.

I introduced my daughter to things early. She watched a buddy of mine gut a buck he had shot when she was 6. I told her to let me know if she wanted to take a walk while he did it, but instead, she stood there, intently watching, asking what everything was. She was 100% fine with all of it. She helps me butcher deer, portion up the meat, grind sausage, etc. She loves all of it. The only part she hasnt had a chance to see yet, is the actual shooting of a deer. -

The JDs are really nice too. Thats what I would buy if I was buying one right now, and they do have a diesel model. The Kubotas are ugly, but they just plain work. Our area is pretty hilly, not like a mountain or anything, but some good, steep elevation changes and deep creek beds that we have crossed with it. We actually disced up a trail we had just cut, and had to cross a drainage ditch thats about 4 feet deep with banks that Id think twice about climbing with my truck, and we ran the disc right through there with the Kubota towing it. No problem. I should have taken a video, because all 4 wheels were not on the ground climbing out of that ditch.
