BTW, Virgil, if youd like to try growing some crab apples from seed, let me know, Id gladly pick some and ship them to you.
-
Yep. I grew mine from seed, just waited until the fruit was beginning to rot and buried them. I buried handfulls of them, hoping a couple would grow here and there. Alot of them grew.

I wonder if a rattle bag would sound better if you took some antlers and cut them up in pieces and replaced the plastic pieces in the rattle bag with them. Hmmmmm....

I know what you were saying and my comment wasnt aimed directly at you, it was just kind of a "just sayin" comment. Sorry if it came off as being pointed.

Great story! Shes gonna be hooked!

Yeah that was a pretty ballsy thief. From what I heard, the truck was parked right near one of the entrances to a major department store, and during daylight. If thats how it happened, that guy has a set of brass ones. I know they caught him last week, but one of the guns has still not been found.

Camo, Blaze Orange, whats the difference? Theres no way to mistake a hunter clad in either for a deer if you are correctly verifying your target. If there was a deer in between them, maybe I could see a way to justify it as an accident if the bullet passed through or near the deer and hit the other person (wearing full camo) that was not visible in the background. That doesnt sound like the case here though, as long as the reports we are getting are correct.

IMO, not an accident, but an act of pure, outright, unsafe stupidity. Right from the article... "saw what he thought was a deer and fired his rifle" How many times have you heard that when it comes to hunting "accidents"? I hear it multiple times per year. Unless the guy that got shot was wearing a deer costume and crawling on all 4's, there is no possible way that you could mistake a person for a deer if you are safely and correctly identifying your target before you shoot. You should not be shooting at movement, color, noise or anything other than a damn deer. Stories like this get my blood boiling because they are called "accidents". Nobody gets shot by accident, every shooting is either intentional or a result of unsafe gun handling.

I dont have experience with planting apple trees, but I did plant some crab apple trees a few years ago near one of my stands. They are coming up pretty good and within a few more years, should be producing. The deer love them and they tend to hang on a bit longer than regular apples. I have also seen them grow in just about any soil condition. If you cant do regular apples, they might be something to think about.

Anyone ever try to test one of your cams?
WNYBuckHunter replied to crs740's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
I have a Moultrie I60 that works pretty good, but the LCD screen died and trying to get ahold of their customer service now-days is next to impossible. I sent 3 emails to them only to get a response that I should call the number and sit on hold. I was looking at getting one or two more of their cams this year, but Ill spend a few extra bucks and buy Bushnells, as they get great ratings. I wouldnt mind trying a Cuddeback as well, they are just more spendy. -
Great pics!

I just have my grunt call, which I can use to do doe and fawn bleats as well. Works great and I dont need to carry multiple calls. I have a rattle bag too, just havent had it work yet. Ill probably start giving it a shot starting this week.

Sounds like you have some scrappers around!

Depends on the phone you have, but if you have a smart phone, just setup a Photobucket account and download the app to your phone. When you take the pic(s), upload them to photobucket and copy and paste the link to your reply. Thats how I do it.

I agree, shoot an email to DEC and get a reply and print it up. The laws are pretty fuzzy with this issue. I started looking at what they say for the other thread we had going about this very thing a while ago, and I couldnt figure it out for sure. Heck, the DEC can ticket you for letting bears feed from your bird feeders if they decide to. If it was me, I would hunt iver the bait for coyotes, etc, but just wouldnt shoot a bear that came to it.

Showing low 40s during the day out my way for the weekend. Night time lows in the 30s. I have a 3 day weekend coming up, as I took Halloween day off to hunt. Should be goo.

Ive had my daughter out in the woods since she was 4. I didnt try taking her on long hunts, maybe a couple of hours tops. Thats usually all that she could take at a time. I bought a hub style ground blind and thats what we usually go in. I let her bring a coloring book and some crayons, a couple of blankets and bought her her own grunt tube and some cheap binos. Over the last few years, she has been able to go out for longer sits and I started introducing still hunting and stalks to her last season. This year, she has been practicing going into my 2 person ladder stand with me. She has a safety vest and the whole 9. Make sure to get your kids some good, warm clothes to go out in, I bought my daughter a nice (and a little pricey) camo hunting jacket, a blaze hat and some camo gloves so that she feels even more into it. Last year, her and I started squirrel hunting together and we have continued the small game hunting this year. She loves everything about it, and Im pretty sure shes hooked. One key has been not to force anything on her. If she doesnt feel like going out with me, I dont make her. She goes when she wants and that way she enjoys it more. I also offer up all aspects to her, from shed hunting in the winter, to simple walks in the spring, to scouting and hanging stands. Its really up to the parent when they feel the time is right. 4 is when I felt she was ready to start going with me, before that I would just let her see and touch the deer I brought home, and answer all of the questions she asked (which was alot lol). If you feel your daughter is ready at 3, by all means, go for it.
