Sounds nice, maybe Ill have to pick one up and give it a shot. I love my old school spreader, but it does have a few down sides, like seed in my shoes and pockets (and not in the ground) and seed tends to get caught where the canvas is stapled to the wood. It puts out a very nice, even broadcast though. Its kinda fun to do some of the work with old school tools too.

Yep, George is the one that got me started with that. Before he suggested it, I used to mix my stuff all together and spread it. Say I was doing brassicas, PTTs and GHRs, the larger GHR seed would kinda float around in the bag, and then Id end up with patches where I had a bunch of them and other areas with none. Ive used George's seed in the past, and had very good results with it.

Isnt the Solo spreader just a bag spreader with a plastic bin instead of a bag? I dont really see the advantage. I actually use a bag spreader that is older than many of the members on here lol. Theres no plastic, its all wood and tin with a canvas bag. I want to say it was made in the 40s, Ill have to look, the date is on there.

Also, I dont use mixes and spread seeds separately, so that I get the most even coverage.
-
I would say no just looking at the pattern that is showing with the plants. I use a bag spreader kinda like this...
-
One suggestion, get yourself a hand spreader. My clover actually started germinating at the same time as my brassicas did this year, only difference is that the brassicas are much larger than the clover due to it growing faster.

I had a spot that I had hunted forever, someone bought the adjoining land, said I was fine to keep hunting it, but then started riding his ATV around the outside of the property on a daily basis. He resold the land after 1 year. I had already stopped hunting there, just because I had other land to hunt elsewhere.

If you cant find any close by, let me know, I can pick up whatever you want at Turners and then bring it with me to work and we could meet up and Ill get it to you.

She could arm wrestle Haley for that

Dmp does make a difference when you get your license?

Its random. Doesnt really matter in my 2 WMUs though, they hand them out to anyone that applies here. -
Archery tags , dmps , regular gun season , ml season
WNYBuckHunter replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
Also remember, your regular season buck tag turns into an either sex for ML season if you dont use it during gun season. -
Oh absolutely worth a try. Winter Rye will grow just about anywhere, no fertilizer really needed for it. It ends up growing in my ATV frame every year after Im done spreading seed lol.
-
Welcome back buddy! I think your best bet at this point would be Winter Rye if you dont want to use any fertilizer at all. I have experimented with no fert plots, and they will grow, but I think the most I ever got out of them was under 10 inches of growth. I planted the same plots with the same mix and added fertilizer the next year and they were more than knee high. How much area are you going to do?

Plot is growing pretty well.

Not to take this too far off topic, but where is the best (most cost effective) place to get the Dunstans? I am looking to pick some up and plant them in various areas on my property. I dont mind giving up a little hunting time to do it. -

So I guess the question is, whats your future plan for the plot? A long term perennial clover plot or something you want to replant with annuals each year, that you are using the clover to help regain nitrogen? -

You can order it just about anywhere that sells fertilizer. Home Depot can even get it for you. Just have to plan ahead a bit. -

I will hit mine with urea this year if I feel they need it in about a month. Hopefully they dont. -

Another set hung today. This one covers the clover plot, the trail at the end of the pinch as well as allowing me to see into the thicket on the other side of the trail. Another option for the area with different winds. -

Looks good! Are you going to overseed the clover with a cover crop, like winter rye? -

Here’s typical growth that we get. The year I planted These plots, we used 10-10-10 at a rate of 150lbs per acre, so just a little more per acre than what I did This year, but only because I used 19-19-19 this year. -

I’m in a very good area, the soil here is pretty rich. I was down by the plots yesterday hanging stands, I’m getting great germination so far, the plots are almost green and it’s been less than a week since I planted Some of the plants are pushing out their second leaves already. -

Geeze I havent Updated this in a while. Might as well restart it. Yesterday afternoon Haley and I got our first set on our new property hung. It’s a double sitting in an oak and beech flat. When I put my food plots in, this area has turned into a pinch point. It sits right between the plots. I put a trail cam in there a few weeks ago and they have confirmed that I have pretty heavy traffic going through there already. This set will cover it nicely and be easy and quiet to get into. I plan to put a water source in this spot, probably a buried tub or trough, as well as a mock scrape. During bow and crossbow I can cover the majority of it. During gun I can reach both plots as well once I cut lanes. -

No lime needed. 250lbs of 19-19-19 for 2 acres is plenty. Been using the same basic process for years with great results. I will hit the plota with urea if needed in about a month. Sometimes I need It, other times I dont -

I dont Buy mixes, I buy Seed from the local feed store, I believe It’s all seedway or locally sourced seed. There’s no “inert material” in it or anything like that, I know What I’m buying. I’m broadcasting each type of seed separately so I have More control over evenly planting each type. Costs a lot less than buck on a bag seed too. I have Less than $150 into fertilizer and seed this year and I’m doing 2 acres worth.
