Antler Restrictions - What are your thoughts?
WNYBuckHunter replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
See, I think you are wrong there. The distinction is there, just take a look at some of the P&Y regulations. Its clearly spelled out on what is wild and what is not. As far as deer getting used to human scent and the wildness being taken out of it, thats not right either. I hunt suburban areas all the time, right near housing complexes, etc and the deer there come into contact with people every day. Does that make them less skittish or wary of people? Heck no, not at all. If you are in a stand or blind and they smell you, they are on alert and/or gone just as fast as a deer in the country is. Yes, they get a bit more tolerant of seeing people in some types of situations, but its not like they will normally walk up to people. If they do, its because they have been being fed directly by people for some time or they are a freak occurrence.- 1885 replies

Are you really trying to tell us that you cannot buy opportunities to harvest trophies? You can't really be that naive? Thats not what Im saying at all. Nice try though.- 1885 replies

The outside showers have to have a catch pan for the water. With my pop up I have a portable water tote with wheels on it that the sink drains into. -

I have no pictures of deer eating any of the chickory or brassicas in my plot yet, just the fallen apples and Ive seen nibbling on the rye grass and clover. -
Deer population - Is it growing or is it over hunted?
WNYBuckHunter replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
I never said that, go back and read what I wrote. I dont feel like repeating lol. ;D -
I use a variety of them simply because I like to use new stuff. Currently I have Rage 2s, Crimson Talon XTs, and Grizz Tricks. I dont know how the Rages or Grizz Tricks work from personal experience yet though. The CT XTs are great.

They might have been the product of an exotic species ranch hunt. No tag needed.

Deer population - Is it growing or is it over hunted?
WNYBuckHunter replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
The idea behind killing more does and getting the doe to buck ratio down is not that there will be MORE bucks, just that you will see the resident bucks more often. Why? Because there are less does available and the bucks need to travel more to find them, bringing your chances up of seeing the bucks. In your example, it sounds like the guy put way too much pressure on his land and drove the herd away from it, so the neighbors were able to take advantage of the mistake he made. Now if he would have cordoned off a good size chunk of thick woods near the center of his property as a sanctuary area, the deer may have stayed instead of leaving for less pressured areas. Sounds like the QDM worked, he just made a few mistakes. -
Antler Restrictions - What are your thoughts?

Im not one necessarily for mandatory AR, but that statement is a crock of you know what. I know of one guy that has multiple 160+ deer on his wall, a few 180+ deer included and more 120+ sets of antlers from bucks hes shot than he knows what to do with. He even had one of the NY records for a couple of years until another guy near him dropped one that broke his record. He owns @ 20 acres and hunts a couple of other small parcels. Hes not rich, not even close. Hes not the only guy I know thats just your average Joe income-wise, that consistently drop big bucks. I don't think it's really any secret that you can basically buy trophy opportunities today. Also, landowners who can devote time and money to heavy-duty deer management on large parcels of property or large cooperatives of property can create opportunities that are not available to the rest of us. Sure there are always isolated situations where some very rare individuals can find some special circumstances or special talent and do well, but as a general rule, I would say that opportunities can be and are bought by those with enough money. Doc Come on Doc, its not isolated situations. How many guys do you know that have shot one or more 120+ deer? I know quite a few and none of them were taken on paid hunts or large tracts that are managed. Only a couple of the guys have more than 200 acres. Do you know how much land you need to really manage deer? They roam around alot lol. The guys that I know that drop big bucks consistently are just guys that do wht they have to in order to put the time into hunting that they need to. Others are just lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.- 1885 replies

There are some threads about them on Archerytalk. Some people swear by them, others say they are no good. I cant see why they would be better than normal bladed broadheads.

Thanks guys! I sure will get to play golf again lol. I just picked the game up this year. Yes, she knows about my plan and she is all for it. She loves that I hunt, and almost likes venison more than I do lol. She goes out and sits with me once or twice a season as well. bushnell, congrats to you! That is the same time as we are due as well, sounds like the board will be full of baby pictures around that time lol.

I might be able to fit a small water system in it, an RV tank underneath the floor, but I dont know about the water heater. You can get outdoor showers that are portable though and just haul one with you. I was thinking about a small pump handle sink, but then you have to figure something out for the grey water, as its illegal to dump it on the ground in most places. Ill probably just forget any type of water system and concentrate on making more storage room. The propane light is a definite possibility though. -

While its a cool mount, its not worth the aggravation lol. I pick my battles, and have my shoulder mount in the living room, sheds laying on shelves, etc etc. I cant complain lol.
