  1. I plant plots for a few reasons. I would say at this point being that I have been doing it for years, I am doing it mainly because I get a great amount of satisfaction from working the land and using the equipment. Secondly I want to keep the deer in my property and keep them well fed. Lastly I want to better my hunting situations. With major food sources on my land it helps me pattern the deer and enjoy watching them and maybe even shoot one once in a while. I do hunt over my plots and I will continue to! I think that having the plots that I do does help with rack size but it is the last thing on my mind when I plan my plots. I just want healthy deer that feel safe on my land and I can enjoy watching and hunting. The big racks will mainly come from the fact that I pass up the smaller ones!
  2. sounds like a good setup you have there! I finally got my clover, chickory and rye mix planted last weekend. I had a few soft spots but I had to get it in the ground. I am hoping the rye takes off so the weeds don't take over too bad. My grandfather sprayed the beans and corn and the beans are looking great.
  3. Beans are growing well. They definitely need some sun and warm weather to continue to do well tho. Keeping my fingers crossed!
  4. I used an avian X jake and feeding hen during my youth season hunt! They worked awesome!!
  5. Look up "KROTOFLIX" on YouTube . He has some awesome DIY camera equipment such as cranes and sliders and the like. I think the coolest DIY slider I've seen on YouTube was made out of a 36" ball bearing drawer slide. Pretty cool.
  6. Mossy Oak Biologic has a good deal on soil tests. I always do mine through them. http://www.plantbiologic.com/t-soil.aspx
  7. I think the hunters per square mile is definitely an issue that we can't change but more of a QDM mentality will help immensely! It never ceases to amaze me how when people see QDM or QDMA they automatically think buck management. That is a big part of it. But its about all deer! If you plant some clover, cut some trees, plant some trees for cover or browse, shoot does, or any other project that will help deer, you are a deer manager! And are practicing QDM! Wether you like it or not!!!
  8. Check out Dunstan Chestnuts. They are the fastest growing and totally blight resistant! Www.Chestnuthilltreefarm.com or real tree nurseries sell them. I planted 10 bareroot seedlings last year and was thoroughly impressed. The grew a ton of new growth. I'm expecting them to grow a foot next year!
  9. So far I love it. We have done very little with it so far but I'm looking to take it to the woods this weekend. I'll report back. We looked at a bunch of tractors and it seemed by far the best value. Plus the dealer was willing to take our old equipment on trade an he gave us a very fair price.
  10. Thanks. New holland. Are a medium priced tractor. They are much less than a John Deere but more than some other newer brands. We also traded in some other equipment to help defray some of the cost. It's a great tractor! I hope I never have to buy another!
  11. Thought I would update this with pics of the plots from early October. This is a pic of the rye about a week before the season started. It was coming in well but the deer were eating it as fast as it came out of the ground. This one gives you a view of all 3 sections (Rye, Brassicas, Corn) It turned out fantastic! Here is a view from the stand. I saw tons of deer out of this stand throughout the season. I didnt kill a deer out of if but I passed on a few small bucks and saw a ton of deer. It was very rewarding to see deer reacting and enjoying all my hard work! All in all it was by far my most successful year of foodplotting and I cant wait for next year. After Christmas I went up to check the plots and found flock of 50 + turkeys devouring my corn! As you can see there are a few tracks in the field! And we also have a new toy to help make our plots easier and more fun this upcoming spring!! Good luck everyone! I hope everyone is as excited about the new year as I am!
  12. Shot this doe Saturday around 4:30 pm. She came out into a soybean foodplot with 3 other deer. Had a very rough season. No shots at mature bucks (Passed on 10 young bucks between bow and gun) and killed one other doe with a rifle opening day. I was elated to take this deer! And it was the first deer with my new TC omega. It was a 90 yard shot she was quartering to me just a bit, took her right behind the shoulder and took out one lung and the liver. Great way to wrap up the season with a great friend! congrats to everyone who had luck this year! Time to start prep for next year!
  13. I'll be out for an hour on friday and all day sat and sunday. Last hoorah for the season. Slowest season I had in years. Looking forward to changing that (I hope)
  14. I have a savage model 11 in .243. Killed 3 deer and a 275 lb black bear with it last year. 2 heart shots and a neck shot on the deer. The largest one ran all of 20 yards. and the first shot on the bears shoulder dropped him in his tracks. (even tho I added 2 more for good measure) I would say if you are looking for whitetails only you do not have to enter in to the 30 caliber range. I would say 243 25-06 or 270 or maybe a 7mm-08 either way. Oh and I have been really loving the Redfield Revolution scopes. I have one on my rifle and one on my ML and they are a great bang for the buck. Plus lifetime warranty and made in America! Good luck!
  15. Dude! If you research Chestnut Hill Tree farm or Realtree Nursery you will see that they are supplying the trees to Walmart and they are the same thing that I ordered only larger and older! They are actually cheaper too!! I just hope that a store closer to me gets stocked with them this year!
  16. If he is shooting a consistent group with his broadheads time after time then either move the sight or check the tuning of the rest by paper tuning the bow. DO NOT just move the rest without checking through paper first. It is foolish to try and guess at this stuff a few days before the season 99% of the time if bow is tuned correctly it will hit the same. Sometimes you need to make a small adjustment to the sight (which is not a big deal) If all else fails take it to a bow shop and ask an expert
  17. I can tell that everyone is as excited as I am for the season to start!!
  18. I think spring is the best way to go. Especially if you can buy at walmart because the trees are much bigger and will produce faster!
  19. I ordered my dunstans from Chestnut Hill Tree farm. But they have a contract with walmart and they do sell some larger trees to select walmart stores every spring so keep your eyes open for that. As far as oaks Nativ Nurseries and Morse Nursery have a good selection. Good luck
  20. Nice bobcat!! No question what it is. Mountain lions look totally different and have a much bigger frame.
  21. I got a cheap Comfort Zone one at Dicks and it works fine!
  22. Thanks everyone! I am very happy with how it all turned out this year. I am noticing a big difference in the amount of deer its attracting as well. Bring on Oct. 1!!!!
  23. They will be heavily producing nuts within 10 years but I bet they will produce some nuts with 2-3 more years.
