  1. Make sure you fence them! Otherwise the bucks will rub them and all the deer will browse the heck out of them. Also don't just buy some trees at lowes or tractor supply. Order some from a nursery with the proper rootstock for your conditions and goals. I would recommend you get some disease resistant varieties as well, such as liberty, enterprise or gold rush. These varieties are late season and are pretty good for low maintenance conditions which most trees planted for deer end up getting.

I would also guess at 3.5 yr old.
  3. Shoot a doe last night so I'm not sure if the commotion of getting her out will mess things up today. Just as many shots or more this morning as opening day morning I think.
  4. The wind has shifted to out of the east and I am set up in a west wind stand. Probably won't see much now but it's too late to make a move.
  5. Fletch my area had about a foot of snow but it has settled down quite a bit now, maybe to eight inches or so
  6. Beautiful morning in 8F. Hardly any wind. Turkeys are flying down now. Come on deer!
  7. I usually go with 9 or 10 now a days. I hate running out. Last time was last year when my friend pushed out three coyote's on a drive last year. I only had 4 bullet's. I used them up on coyotes number one and two streaking across a corn field. When number three popped out 10 yards from me I was out. I tried to chase him back into the drive but he cut out.
  8. Have the day off but I'll be plowing for a while this morning. Maybe get out for the afternoon hunt.
  9. In my area of 8F there were a few deer killed but not a lot. Nothing really close but a few does killed across the road from me. I saw two small bucks and a doe with a fawn, which was better than the no deer I saw last year on opening day.
  10. In the house now. Saw one buck early in the thick stuff, too thick to see just how big. Very breezy and no snow accumulation yet.
  11. Snowing a little in 8F but nothing on the ground yet. Not too windy yet either but I know it's coming!
  12. Not much action at my spot in 8F. Just one half rack small buck so far. Spooked some under the stand on the way on.
  13. Farm Credit is your best bet. They are pretty easy to work with as long as you have the required down payment.
  14. I'll be behind my house in 8F where it will be my fith season here ( I hunted steuben county for 16 years before that) Which stand I sit in will depend on the wind direction.
  15. The weekend before gun opened was awesome as a youngster hanging out at a deer camp in the southerntier. All the stories, watching the older people having a ball getting all buzzed up Saturday, then doing the same with them as I got older! Also the smoked hing quarters and fried turkey were the best eating. Then we would all rest up and relax Sunday, go to bed early then get up early for the hunt. It was the best times!
  16. Talk about a funny deer hairdo!
  17. Just had 3 doe and three fawns feed by in front of me. No bucks!
  18. What your experiencing is why I mostly hunt by myself or with a very few other longtime hunting buddies who are like brothers to me.
  19. Out my back door on private land. 30-06 Remington BDL 165 grain sst. Occasionally carry my father in laws old Remington 6mm or Remington 870
  20. In my woods in 8F I haven't seen any chasing yet in person. My cameras have picked up a few night time chases by little bucks. Saturday night I had four does with four fawns come by me. There was no buck with them. A little half rack came in and harassed them but didn't chase them.
  21. I just watched the forecast for Saturday, I hope it changes. Looks like warm, windy and maybe wet!
  22. Picked the wrong stand this morning. My covert camera was sending me pics of one of my target bucks at 7:20 this morning fifty yards from the stand I hunted twice yesterday, story of my season this year it seems.
