  1. Taking my grandnephew Kayden out tomorrow. Hopefully I can do a repeat of this morning. Just happy he wants to go hunting.
  2. Had a classic hunt. My but no sooner hit the ground at 5:02, and the gobbling started. Two were about 400 yrds away and on the neighbors. Not a fan of hunting close to borders, but I snuck to within 30 yrs of the posted signs. Toms were probably 250 yrds out. One would barely catch his breath before gobbling again. Must have gobbled 100 times. Used a pot and a month call to give some soft tree yelps. 5:25 he hit the ground. He gobbled the entire way in. Ay 50 yrds he put on a show, spitting and drumming, and triple gobbling. I hadn't made a single call since he was coming in willingly. He slowly closed the distance while doing his dance and gobbling constantly. At 25 yrds, I putted to get him to break strut, and down he went. Shot at 5:38. 23#, 1 1/8 hooks, 11" beard.
  3. I'm up and headed for the woods. 54*, little breezy. Rain in a few hrs. Good luck everyone.
  4. Cousins farm is in a neighboring 4t. Lots of turkeys and very talkative.
  5. Really enjoyed reading your post. Made me feel like I was there. Had to be one adrenaline fueled hunt with those jakes gobbling that close to you. Is a odd bird, but one that I'd certainly be proud of. Congrats.
  6. Lol, I fell for that gimmick. Blew that stupid thing till I was blue in the face many times. Rarely had a response. I'd owl hoot, and get a response. Got so pissed off, I tossed the thing in the bushes.
  7. My first. A hand me down from my oldest brother to older brother then to me, the baby of the bunch. It's a single shot Savage .410. my dad bought it new for my oldest brother in the early 60's. I still have it in my safe. I officially handed it down to my late nephew's kids. My nephew took his first squirrel with it. When I know his kids old enough to realize the value, ill gladly hand it over.
  8. I've used a gobble call to bring in a tom before. It's hit or miss. I've had them head the other direction when they heard it. I use it as a locator, shock gobble call, or when roosting in the evening to get a tight lipped gobbler on roost to sound off just once so I know he there.
  9. Same as deer, the amount of daylight triggers the breeding season. Weather will affect the timing somewhat.
  10. Congrats on your first tom. He's got what looks like a hell of a set of hooks.
  11. Congrats. Sounds like you had a great hunt.
  12. Congrats to all the successful hunters today. . I'm still trying to figure out the best way to prepare a empty shotgun shell. Lol. Good luck to those going out tomorrow morning. Alarm is set, but I've got serious doubt I'll get up.
  13. Heard my first gobble at 5:10 about 300yrd out into neighbors land. He must have gobbled 50 times. At 5:25 I gave a few calls and directly off to my right one sounds off only 80 yrs out. I can't move because I can see him on the limb. He flies down and at 25 yrds I shot. I had to shoot lefty, and it was a hard angle. Needless to say I pulled the shot. Got on a different tom, and had him committed. At 60 yrds two hens intercepted and away they went. On the way back to the truck, spotted two strutter's in a corn field. Circled them 3 times trying to get them in range. Closest the got was 75 yrds. Had the hens within 10 feet, but the toms never went near those hens. All in all, it was a hell of a lot of fun. Except for the miss.
  14. He swings, he missed. Details later. Still have one gobbling.
  15. 41* and clear. Rain coming in around 10am. Hopefully their a tad more talkative this morning. Good luck.
  16. Cousin and I attended to roost some gobblers tonight. He heard 2 gobbles in the next county, and I heard 1 in the next state. Hopefully tomorrow morning will be better. Good luck everyone, and stay safe.
  17. Counted 7 longbeards, 5 jakes and a slew of hens. The guys from Maine should have a good time.
  18. Opps the dreaded sideways pic
  19. At my cousin's farm. These toms are only 15' from me.
  20. I'll wait for the first time glampers. Could use a new camper.
  21. Buddies son took these two toms. One yesterday evening ( legal to hunt all day in Maine), and one this morning. They will be here tomorrow around 7pm to try there luck on our birds.
  22. I'm out of likes. But I've often used this tactic on toms that just won't come that extra 30 yrds. Like you said, it doesn't work all the time, but what do ya have to loose.
