Your correct. The tom gobbles on roost to call the Hens to him. Were trying to reverse mother nature's intention. So many times you here stories when the tom hits the ground, he shuts up, or heads the other way. It's because the ladies showed up and are dragging him away from the annoying hen(us). This is where the tactic of mimicking the boss hen to piss her off comes into play. Your try to get her mad, and hopefully come up and show you who's in charge, dragging tommy behind her.

I truly believe our birds have become hunter savvy, and are passing that trait along. Maine's turkey season is relatively young compared to NY's. Only started getting popular past 10+ yrs.(at least in my friends area). Friends of mine slay the birds in Maine. Come here for our opener and have a much different outcome. They really have to work for our birds. We hunt private land, so were not dealing with the public like others.

Season is perfect. Those that think it will be easier a week or so sooner, haven't done much hunting with a youth. It's dam tuff during youth season. 2nd week of May is the best. Hens are setting, and the ones that are not, leave the toms short after day break to lay.

Wife just picked up a hummingbird feeder. She bought the powder to mix. What do you use in your HB feeders? -

Got the usual brids hanging around my feeders. Pretty much the same as mentioned. Two wild turkey hens visit a couple times a day. Had to fix the poles there on because a bear has knocked them down twice. -
Weather in 4u looks like I might be able to squeeze out a dry couple hrs before the rain hits. Gotta dig the rain gear out.

Did some long range scouting this evening. Heard several gobblers on roost. Two in the area I plan on hunting, and 4 or more across the road where my cousin is going to hunt. Tomorrow if I have time and the weather holds, I'll go sit and see if I can pinpoint Tommy's exact location.

Yes, I agree.

Very possible. Like people, things don't develop properly or a injury could have caused the issue

I haven't shot a jake in many yrs. Doesn't mean I won't.

I wore out a pair of boots the past couple yrs and never found a single morel. Mowing a clients lawn I ran over two huge ones before I realized what they were. Found several on the edge of clients lawns last yr. Figured I'd take the mower through the woods this yr.

20 yrs ago I'd hear grouse drumming frequently. Don't think I've heard one in the past few yrs.

Calling for frost in my area tonight and tomorrow.

Most of the maples in my area are leafing out. Willows, birch, poplar and cherry are even farther along. Oaks are still budding out.
-
Took a walk this morning in my hunting area. Noticed the leaf canopy is about a week and a half early. Usually on May 1st, I'd be able to spot the birds on the roost as there was little to no leaf canopy. Not this yr. Sould make it easier to slip in a little closer if needed, but one could also miss a roosted bird and ruin the morning hunt.

I don't see any difference using a .410 or a bow. They both limit your effective range. If you not proficient or haven't practiced/patterned will either, your chances of missing or wounding a bird increase.

That's fantastic. Here's to you and others that donate time to educate others to be safe and ethical hunters.

Couple yrs ago when my grandnephews took their course, half were adults. Congrats to your daughter for passing. Good luck this season.

Always liked Primos calls. But decided to grab a HS strut for the heck of it. I always put a slight bend in my calls to fit better. Grabbed the HS call and "snap". Damm frame was plastic, not aluminum. Oh well. Glad I got some Primos call too.

It's almost to nice to shoot.

My cousin has the same problem. He tosses out feed for his chickens and ducks, and the turkeys come running. Can just about touch the things. Walk up into the fields and those same birds change into the most challenging to hunt.

Started mowing yesterday. First client, got stuck in a spot that is never wet.. wasn't too bad getting it out. Fixed the spot and went onto the 2nd lawn of the day. Walk the "problem" areas, pick up a few sticks and hope on the Z and start mowing. Yep, stuck again. This time I'm not just stuck, I'm friggin buried. Had to go home grab ropes, chains ECT and a come a long to get me out. Took 1.5 hrs total. Fixed that area as best as possible, loaded up and went home. Got more rain last night. And more coming tomorrow. Joy.... At this rate, it will be 2 weeks before things dry up enough. I'll need a baler or a heard of goats.
