Who flung dung... By the brown spot on the wall.
-
U know the rules.. no pics.. never happened.

Not sure if it's past it's prime.. a 1000# mower partially smashed this along with another that was totally pancaked.

I cold smoke for a couple hours with maple or apple, then SV at 160* for a few more hrs. Absolutely fantastic. I've also ground some and made some turkey sausage. That was good to. I've cubbed it up and browned it a little than let it simmer in a alfrado sauce.

Thanks,. I think. Lol. Going back there later to look around. Maybe I'll find a couple more.

Just shut the truck off at a client's, and I was greeted to gobbling on the hillside. All my gear is in the truck, but it's after 1 pm. Really wish NY would allow all day hunting.

I walk 400 acres on Sunday looking for morells and don't find a one. Very new at this, and I probably walked by a few. Today I'm mowing a client's lawn, and basically in the lawn next to the woods, I spot what I think are morells. Unfortunately, the front caster wheel of the mower squished one and damaged the other slightly. So are these morells? In a way I hope there not, because that means I ruined the only 2 I've ever found

Dug a few leeks today. Walked 400 acres trying to find morells. Found none. Looked where I found some last year, but didn't pick them. Went back 2 days later and they were a wilted mess. Never had morells, so I was hoping to find at least one to try today. Leeks are quite potent. Thinking a omlet with leeks andSwiss tomorrow morning will be great. Of course a side of home cured bacon will complete the meal.

Went looking for morells and dig up some leeks late in the morning. The leek patch is near a field the birds like to hang out in. Few soft clucks, and a tom double gobbled only 100 yrds away. I clucked and purred softly one more time and shut up. Next time he gobbled, he was on the other side of the field. Snuck a peek to see him walking slowly away. Think he's the same tom my cousin missed twice in the same field. Might have to ambush him as I don't think he's going to come to any calls.

Wife informed me I have to take her to breakfast. Then she's heading to her mom's. I'm thinking I should go look for some morells and leeks. And while I'm at it I might as well bring the shotgun and a couple mouth calls. Might catch a long beard looking for love.

Be careful. It's one of those meat eaters. I hear those light colored ones usually stay underground during the day, and only come out at night to kill unsuspecting hikers. They go for the jugular. Kinda like Monty Pythons killer rabbit. Lol

I slept in. Just couldn't get my old tired butt out of bed that early.
-
TF. I figured out why you missed that bird the other day. Your eyes were watering from the onion smell. Don't set up in a leek patch next time. Lol

Pork butt takes 10+ hrs to smoke at 225-250*. I pull mine off the smoker when the bone pulls out with no resistance and pulls out clean. Smoked to a internal temp (IT) of 160 ish. Foil, and continue to cook to a IT of 205 before I test for doneness. Crock-Pot. At least 10 hrs to get to the pulling stage. If slicing, a little less.

Sitting here by the fire, and I can here a tom quite a ways away gobbling his head off. Live near Lebanon valley speedway, and someone has rented the track. Everytime the engine revs, or the tires squeal, he gobbles. Unfortunately he's way far away from where I can hunt. But sitting here with a campfire, and listened to gobbling. Win.. just wish I couldn't here the valley speedway. Hence why our place is on the market.

Wow. Lots of great ideas. Going tomorrow to dig some. Going to look for morells to.

Congrats TF...what a great run n gun hunt.

Oh boy. Can't tell you how many times I've had Jake's run a tom off. I've called a "flock of 'em over a half mi, only to run the tom's off. Ya 8 Jake's will chase 3 longbeards off. My tactic.... Ok it a little different.... If the whole group of Jake's come looking to run off the toms,(really me) and If I can lure them from the toms, I'll shoot over there heads AND run at them and break them up. I want to educate them. I've"educated" groups of Jake's several times in a single season. The tom usually gets educated somewhat too but, although later in the season, he start to really search for a hen...I'll switch calls and style of calling, and the tom will run in trying to beat the Jake's to a willing hen. This works late in the season. I've killed several toms in self defense, as they sometimes run in that quick..

Good luck pygmy. Tip one over.

Go get 'em TF. Gosh I wish I had your dedication. I've played that game yrs ago. Used to hunt 25 + days each spring. Lot of those were after I was taged out. If I didn't have someone to take hunting, I'd sit and listen and enjoy the sounds of the birds waking up. Gosh you're bringing up a lot of great memories.

I'm picturing a turkey foot in a middle finger pose. Gotten many of those over the yrs. Too frickin many.

Didn't hunt.. wife open the back door around 6 to let the dogs out. First thing she hears is several gobbles basically in our back yard. Unfortunately, the dogs heard 'em too, and started barking scaring them off. I only own a tad less than 2 acres, but neighbor has 15 that I can hunt. Thinking I may need to get my but up in the morning and try for these toms. Been here for 14 yrs, and haven't harvested anything here. Think it's about time I do.

Congrats grow!!!! Nice bird..

I fully believe Dicks Sporting goods doesn't care. Firearms are a small portion of there sales, and I think they may have been in the beginning stages of phasing them out when the lastest anti 2a movement was unleashed. Weather or not those of us staying away and not buying hunting accessories and other goodies hurts them enough to matter is the question. I know of several people who are avid fisherman, but don't hunt. They don't care about all this and will continue to shop there.

New to using/cooking leeks. Actually, never used 'em before. Just found a patch. I've often used scallions in salads, BBQ potatoes, ect. But never used leeks before. So, how do you prepare or use leeks? What's your favorite use or recipe? I need ideas..
