  1. just made a big pot of venison chili for a 5 day weekend of hunting! Venison burger and venison hot sausage, onions, mushrooms, jalepeno's, diced tomatoes chili beans and chili seasoning! (pet peeve is kidney beans in chili! noooo! thats why god made chili beans)
  2. My belief always was to stick with fixed blades if shooting lower poundage for the penetration and mechanicals if higher for the flight and larger opening. I am one that just isnt that big on the Rages. The quartering shots on those with tests arent all that great and have a lot of deflection but what bothers me the most about them is the damn collars. Ive been sitting in the stand and watch them come open from grazing brush on the way in. Check out scoutlook 2017 broadhead reviews on utube. Love the grim reapers! and my second choice would be fixed muzzys. If you shoot a deer broadside it doesnt matter if you have a spork on the end of your arrow but when they jump the string or quartering away is when you want the right gear. Grim reapers excel as a mechanical quartering away!
  3. you must be near Franks shop. Bought a browning 30-06 from him this fall that I cant wait to break in. I keep a log and have seen 24 deer so far - i also hunt spots in Durhamville, Madison and Augusta. Downed a doe in Madison - in a green field and shot one in stota that I couldnt find. I also bet that since you have brown corn- that nearby you are some green fields. With acorns (deer candy) and apples dropping and tasty green cloverfields around the area, the does find those tastier than dried up corn. They will go back to it for sure. Also agree those young bucks might be harassing them a little, but they wouldnt be on cam unless there were a few does about. The does dont range far. If you had them on cam they are still nearby, but maybe just hitting the next field over more right now.
  4. thats why they go in there cause they feel protected. Also dont want to go stomping around in there and blow them out all the time, they will find another place. You want them to feel secure somewhere. I usually wait til the last weekend of season if need be before tromping thru the thickest of cover. Play the in/out escape trails to food areas, they will come thru.
  5. best of luck this season. I hunt off 13 between stota and 31 towards the beach. hope you get one!
  6. i hunt some real swampy areas. The problem is noise. Its so brushy and the water. Then once freezing happens forget it. The best way i have found is to find the main trails in/out, trial cam them and hunt where they go in and out.
  7. if its a good deal why not..... sounds good to me with a trout stream ? in the dacks deer population can really differ. Just depends on the location. If its for sale and owners dont care, trail cam it and see whats out there. Then figure out how to get them after. Thats the fun of owning land! And yeah might be an option for bear, geese , ducks as well. The land I lease is a nice setup for ducks but since i deer hunt it so much i cant bring myself to shoot the shotgun in there during deer season. I dont like ducks that much.. am betting it is thick if there is a beaver pond , might be a good bedding area near the big woods.
  8. this is the exit from a doe this year with whitetail grim reapers! have lost 2 deer with Rages (had to buy were out of Grims)- went back to these! never lost a deer.
  9. where do you hunt in Stota? I also hunt in stota area. And yeah depends on the farmer and how many fields they have etc. One location I hunt in Augusta they never cut the corn all season, never got to it. But it was good hunting late gun and muzzle season.
  10. this time of year from the opener I just work on putting in a doe or two in the freezer. I hunt a lot of field edges in the evenings and look to stock my venison supply really dont expect much for buck activity til after this weekend. Usually from oct 25 to gun season.
  11. looks like you should put up a cam on your target. Thats amazing. Maybe someone thought ti was a deer and used the shotgun on it! lol Forensics think it is a buck and the coyotes planned it that way.........hehe
  12. yeah they have a large area for sure. Most state offices are that way now. Saw on news that Cuomo sent 30 of them to California to help with wildfires begining of this week.
  13. can happen with any blades for sure, deer are even lost from bullets too. just happens once in awhile. sounds like you def put your time in for looking for it. Hope you have a better season.
  14. that sucks , sorry to hear that. Lost one myself this year . Also with a rage- went back to grims! and dropped a doe sat night in 80 yards. But that sounded like a good buck. Hopefully he made it for you to find him alive another day.
  15. It came out great. Bought the maple mix from the Amish. Then added 4 lbs of ground pork to 6 pounds of ground venison. And 1/3 of a woodchuck cider.
  16. Vanilla?? just doesnt seem right Lol I had a buddy in college that was drunk one night and tied a can of spaghetti O's to a string, rolled it down the hallway of the dorm and said he was trolling for fat girls. Just because he did that didnt make it right! lol
  17. i had issues with a coast guard person a few years ago and had to go over his head and it worked out fine and all was corrected - he issued me a ticket for no visual distress signal in the boat. Showed him the copy of the coast guard regs and he still gave me ticket - there was an DEC guy with him checking for fish etc and he was even rolling his eyes at the guy. Called supervisor and he said yes I was correct and threw out the ticket. There are good and bad ones for sure. You were and are doing the right thing there.
  18. trial run for doe made into maple venison sausage
  19. cinnamon swirl french toast with homeade bacon jam!
  20. Sat night just before dark! First freezer queen down. By the time I got her out of the ravine she went down into and home it was after 10pm. So all day sunday processing worked out great - cause it was too warm to hunt anyway. Grim Reaper blood trail was massive!
  21. had some of that on my boots one time and my sisters dog lifted his leg on me. rude - lol
  22. I used to work for the DOT and we used to get calls all the time to pick them up. In the fall before snow we would get them and hang them from the loader and cut out backstraps and hinds and bury the rest. We used to take turns taking the meat home. This last year me and hunting buddies were in hunting and when we came out there was a hit deer by the road that wasn't there when we went in. My buddy threw it in the truck and the rear hinds were all still good.
  23. Dog is happy I've closed the butcher shop for tonite. Glad to get a doe down but it's sure a lot of work. This is me before I pass out cause I'm old!
