  1. Looks like rain here for am, but I'm hoping that day holds til Sat! Looks perfect. And it's a weird south wind by the looks of it sat morn. Which sets up a couple of my best stands for a buck! But def is looking like a possible big weekend.
  2. I am still hoping to draw that tag one day too! Congrats on the moose and a great trip. And you drew a great unit. I'm hoping for anything 1-6.
  3. I had a track myself this week. Thought it was a high double lung but it was back and she was quartering more than it thought. Arrow showed a good amount of blood, liver and gut. Backed out for two hours and just went back to start a track and see if blood. Had a good blood trail and luckily she never left the trail and was 150 yards away. But some thoughts/tips on tracking i use. - bring a roll of orange tape to mark off last blood spots on trees for daytime tracks - nighttime i take a battery lantern and that lantern never leaves last blood spot. I will go ahead and look around but that stays there to mark where i left off - bow hunting - cant express enough how much i like a lighted nock- so much easier to determine hit area as you can see it better - even in full light. (yes i was off on this hit a little - it was high as i thought but deer was quartered more than i thought. Also finding and determining from the arrow where the hit was is critical in knowing to back out or get on it - unless i see the deer dead in front of me - i will not make a move for 1/2 hour minimum as you never know how close the deer is if it went down and you cant see it. - bring a compass, should always have one but tracking a deer will put off your sense of direction quicker than anything. Many times after finding the deer and then first words are "ok where are we..." - bring in help at a certain point. If i am tracking it first i like to do it quiet and stealthy in case i can get close enough to spy it , but if i have been tracking and cannot find it and need to come back - bring another set of eyes with you. Many times me and a buddy as team usually figure it out - look for blood to be on both sides of where the deer went thru. if it is then this is a great sign usually. If it looks like a spray of droplets its generally lungs - if find no blood at hit sight look at least 40 yards around before determining. I shot a doe once with 12 G and nothing but a little white hair. Got dark and it was thick stuff. Backed out til morn and found an eaten doe 90 yards away . But what i didnt see was blood spray all over 30 yards into the woods and knew it was a good hit. Shouldve went after her right then. The white hair as i later found out, was mostly the under coat and thought my shot was low. - if deer is on a trail and tracks look like they are starting to slow or go from side to side on the trail its prob getting weak and wobbly - Luna and Kunox!
  4. Wow - hope you give yourself extra work and have to mount that one and have it on the barn wall.
  5. Wine and sauce and meatballs by the fire in the dacks. Sounds great have fun. Some good fishing in the area. Maybe you will even see a moose, quite a few in that area.
  6. Big temp drop this weekend! Might be some bucks hitting the ground, just about that time for them to pickup on some chasing.
  7. It was pretty warm overnight so quartered and cooled everything over night in fridge. Didn't get done til after midnight. But up and at em today. Packaged everything and stocked the freezer. Steaks, stew, roasts, couple of cubed steaks and 35 grown man sized venison bacon burgers! Got all my hunting gear reset and ready. Will have Fri Eve thru Tues to play for a buck now.
  8. Yeah I understand but showing up and a bunch of young guys with 223 ARs would make my Spidey sense go off and worry they think they are Rambo. Lol. If it was guys I knew and trusted I wouldnt think twice about it. And I get the stigmatism and what your saying too. But theres no doubt guys are dropping $1400+ on one of those for the cool factor. Which is different than the use of those old semis we've seen used. Usually because it's all they have , at least that's what I've seen. Often appearances are just what they seem. A bunch of young guys with expensive ARs on a deer drive.....I wish them the best of luck but I would pass on that crowd. Just not my thing.
  9. My plan was to hit the canal this morn if I didn't get a deer last night. I figured they would be hitting. 5 casts you didn't even get the motor warmed up. Always a long winter once deer season is over. Looks like a great day out. Guys are just tearing perch up out there now.
  10. Thought I said why....Like I said just me in my own head. Not big on deer drives to begin with and a bunch of guys with .223 ARs just not my thing.
  11. Well...I was up til 1 am. So slept in a bit and got right after it this morn. Had a quick breakfast then got to finishing the deer. Last night got home about 10 and then skinned, quarted and got the meat cooled down. Didn't like those 55-60 overnight temps. I will def make up for it though!
  12. Thanks. That is definitely the plan! Hoping to pull cam cards this weekend and see he's around
  13. That's awesome. Still hoping to get one bear pic too in my life. Looks like a good one too.
  14. Yeah I should've got it done last week! But I guess I was playing defense. Actually it was pissing me off, didn't hunt for like a week and a half. Paced and bitched all weekend....
  15. Hunt #6 10/19. Roadkill stand. Got out after work and got into our close stand that has been getting a ton of does on cam. It just felt like deer were gonna come out at any time. Just after 6pm two does come walking down the trail just like it was scripted. Drew back and shot the second larger one. Complete pass thru. And it went back up the trail it came on. The other one hung out in front of me for 15-20 minutes. Got down after 45 minutes and checked the arrow and it had more guts and liver than I sure wanted to see. Not good in this place it's just so thick and I've lost one to Coyotes before. So snuck out , went home and let the dog out. It has now been 2 hours so gonna just see if any kind of blood trail. Was happy to see a pretty decent blood trail and the deer went right down our mowed trail. So kept on it and about 150 yards there it was right on the edge of the trail. Whew was worried on recovering this one. But haven't lost one since I've used grim reapers they sure do some damage. She must have been quartered more than I thought. Arrow came out way back. But she was down. Gutted, carted out, skinned and quartered and in to cool before midnight. Checked cam card and does all over this spot. Last 3 nights at 6 pm . And also this morn at 9 and again at 2pm. Could just feel I was gonna have some action Tonite. Meat in the freezer, now I can play for a buck! First doe I have ever tagged in this spot. Have tomorrow off to do the butchering. Worked out perfect.
  16. Doe to fill the freezer back up. Tonite it just felt like the perfect night. I just knew something was gonna come out. Two doe came out just after 6pm right down the trail like they read the script. I shot a bit far back and it exited back so she must have been quartered more than I thought. Backed out for a couple hours then went back to just see if any blood trail. Had a good blood trail so kept going and it started getting just a few drops. But she was laying there right in the trail and went about 150 yards. Happy to get a good early doe!
  17. Sorry crappy I wish I shot this sooner so you'd get the score for last week! Guess I was just playing defense! Lol
  18. And found!!!!!!! Story much later. Yes!!!!!!!! Big ole doe.
  19. Gonna be a long night. Sent one on big doe about 6:15. Full pass thru. Checked arrow and it looks more liver/gut than I like to see. Went home to let the dog out. Gonna go back and take a little look and go from there....hoping it down . Those grim reapers do a job. If not gonna be a longer night of hoping no coyotes.
  20. a piece of melon works great for chucks and the chipmunks have a hard time carrying it away.
