Turkey Hunting Success Thread
landtracdeerhunter replied to nygooseduster26's topic in Turkey Hunting
Got some decent body weight, nice looking fans, and long beards, congrats. -
Sounds like a good morning TrevofG. My blind was set up by 5:15 am. Light rain to drizzle. Already getting light. At 5:40 all h ... broke loose. Somebody east of me pumped off 15 shots. If they hit anything, can't be much left to that bird. Wonder if their was 3 of them shooting at a coyote. Dang, Shots all over the place. You wonder how many connected. Never heard this on opener of turkey before. Deer were out in groves in this area.(9f) Got busted going in., boy do I hate that. Seen a nice fox, and a small coyote, that's all.

Tried the Winchesters shells. They extended the range out to 35 yard. Satisfied, although their is more room for improvement.

Their's a priceless pic. Thanks for sharing.

Nice job. Looked into this at a local lumber yard. Comes in one square boxes. Hunter green is about half the price. Mossey oak siding.htm -
The one in the back ground also has a good start.

Interesting how bright the gland is on the hind leg. Is that a new homebrew?

Enjoy!

The DEC. is planning a study in 2013, to assess wild turkey hen survival, breeding success, and harvest rates. You can read that in the fall turkey harvest report for 2011. Take a look at the past with the ring neck pheasant. The wild population thrived 35 years ago. Now if it wasn't for the release program of farm raised birds, very few pheasants would be harvested. Their are some wild birds still in the lake plains area, but very few. The rest of the state is pretty dry. As far as stopping the hunting season for turkey; what did DEC. do with length of pheasant season? Extend it.

Freeze warning for each night through Sunday. Guess the rain won't hurt the rhubarb, but will the freeze damage it? How are the fruit trees looking ? -
That's one real good lookin decoy. If that was in my hunting area, one of the rednecks would shoot it, take it home, and eat it. I reckon, lol.

Hey, I'm real easy to get along with. Maybe your wording could of been used a little differently in your first post. If you feel that bad, don't go out hunting, then their might be 336 birds harvested this spring.
-
Not the greatest of starts for your first post, but welcome to Hunting NY.. See you're from Wyoming County, 338 birds est. spring 2011 harvest. I believe the turkeys cycle in numbers, hopefully this being the lowest. Some members on here, will not agree with you on the low numbers. Some areas have really decent population. As far as DEC flying around looking for turkeys, I question that .

Thanks for all the comments. Also, should clarify. Asked my son month ago if he's going out for turkey. He said no. A week before opening day, he's going now on weekends. Don't get me wrong, glad he's going, just a little advance warning. He's got the 12, leaves dad with the 20. This might get interesting real fast. The 20 GA. Winchester Supreme , Remington Premier shells were sold out at 3 Walmart stores in this area. One gun store has some Winchester, another the Remingtons, and Federals. Shop owner says Federals work good in Remington guns. Get them tonight. I'll be well stocked, write the range on the boxes. Need the 35 yard range, hope that's not to much to ask for, with this gun. I post results when they come in. At the price of shells, it adds up quick. One advantage though, it really feels great getting a gun in hand again.

Sited in guns the other night. A Remington 870; 12 and 20 gauge. The 12 has a HS Strut Undertaker ported choke, shells are the Rem. Nitro Turkey 3 inch number 4's shot. Right on the money at 20, 30 and 40 yards, perfect. The 20 has a HS Strut super full choke using Nitro, 3 inch, number 5 shot. Shot at 20 yard, perfect, 25 yards good, and at 30, maybe 5 pellets on the paper. I increased the size of target, and still not gettng any more pellets on the target. Can that shot spread that quickly in 5 yards? Maybe the choke, maybe the shells, maybe the gun? i like to range out to at least 35 yards. Any suggestions? The video is at 25 yds, 009.AVI

Hope it warms up soon. Guess March spoiled me. Some of my fields are like a swamp. Maybe grow cat tails this year. -
We use to hatch quail eggs in our 500 egg incubator years ago, say maybe 50. The rest were pheasant, chicken, duck, and goose eggs.No offense, but motherless chicks are kind of dumb. We put marbles in their waterier to speed up their drinking skills. They peck at the shinnyness of the marbles getting their beaks wet to get a drink. They then get the idea to drink on their own. Just make sure, u wash the marbles real good first.

Anyone know a good recipe for cooking frog legs? How long can they be kept in the freezer? -
Amazing

Rubber Boots
landtracdeerhunter replied to erussell's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
After going through several companies, hundreds of dollars, and failure after failure with rubber boots, I purchased a pair of $40 Kamik rubber boots for the 2010 deer hunting season. I wear boots almost on a daily basis, from November right through to the end of spring turkey season the following year. , so they get quite a bit of use. When they start failing about the end of May. I purchase a new pair faithfully, which I did in 2011 with the same results going in this May turkey season. They have removable liners, weigh 5.6 lbs. and are steel shanked. When temps. dip down to below freezing, I wear heavier socks and do keep my feet warm. When they wear out, I throw them in the recycle box, out by the road, and they do take them. (You do have to remove the liners though.) They are made in Canada, who better than our northern neighbors, to know how to make boots. Nice to know, u can still purchase a value priced item, and still have them preform quite well, and u get a fresh pair of boots every year. I figure $40 every year is better than $120+ every 2 years, with about, the same results. -
