he told me my season was over!
landtracdeerhunter replied to sits in trees's topic in Turkey Hunting
That turkey would make anyone sit up and notice. He's one big Tommy. -
I totally agree with you. Finding what the turkeys want to hear is the key to success. This year however, they seem to be coming in more silent then usual. Maybe because it's getting late in the year. Had one jake present himself this past Saturday, but passed on him. Come in without a peep. He'll be a nice gobbler come next year. Sunday was deer day. Monday was two nice hens very early. No gobbler with them. Seemed very lonely just wanting to make a friend with the decoys. One more day left, maybe the best for last? Good luck to all that all still out in the woods.

been a great turkey season thus far!!!!
landtracdeerhunter replied to adkmountainken's topic in Turkey Hunting
May is going by, so fast. It has been the best year for me, thus far. Have had more action in the last few days, than I've had all season. The birds come into the call but, just can't get them in those last few yards needed for a good shot. The excitement grows however, with each encounter. Don't know if I'll ever harvest a bird, someday maybe. Just being out with the wildlife is a great rush and can't wait for this weekend. -
Here to from western N.Y. Been alot of gobbling the first two weekends till about 6:30 a.m. No sightings. The neighbor has peacocks and every time they would yell, the turkeys would gobble. Past Saturday and Sunday, very quiet. I figure that is because of the rain, they are down very early off the roost. Saw a big gobbler at 100 yards but, wouldn't commit to the hen decoys or the calls. I figure he's been shot at and is wise. Maybe should of had a Gobbler decoy? Saw a hen at 7:08 come in at 30 yds. She too was moving on. Sunday started with clucking in front of me at 6:38. Nice hen at 10 yds. Stayed there looking at the decoys for a few minutes. Had a jake with hens for decoys to the left rear of me and a tom with a feeding hen to the right. Between me and her was a 8 foot wide ditch with waist deep water. Seeing hens so early in the morning makes me wonder if the nests are getting flooded out. Hope not. I think the hunters have educated the turkeys so, it will be tough from here on out. Good luck to everyone.

No more smoking in City parks and beaches.
landtracdeerhunter replied to First-light's topic in General Chit Chat
Maybe these goverment officials have to much time on their hands, so they have to create work for themselves. Then again, with the population decline in New York, maybe we have to many goverment officials. By the way, I have never been a smoker. -
Has anything like this ever happen to you?
landtracdeerhunter replied to noodle one's topic in General Hunting
Myself, I would have done the same thing. -

This is something that I think should be mentioned in the hunting coarses. When I took my bow coarse 10 years ago, I asked that question and, they seemed to avoid it like the plaque. Maybe because the room was full of younger kids. I don't know why he wouldn't answer the question. The instructors know that mistakes happen. They hit ethics hard, but what about that fine line of right and wrong. What is right in a situration like this? -
Congrats on the harvest. Some nice pics. They say rattlesnake tastes good too, but I don't think I'll be trying it any time soon. lol

turkey pics from around our place....
landtracdeerhunter replied to growalot's topic in Turkey Hunting
Thanks for posting the pics. That gobbler would be a nice framed picture on the wall, and also as a mount. I've been trying to get nice turkey pictures for a while, but have only ended up with deer. Guess I shouldn't complain. -
I would think Amherst would have alot of sheds seeing that they have so many deer. North Tonawanda is the same way, I understand. Alot of houses with acres of rural growth for ideal habitat with no hunting. They eat so many peoples bushes and trees. Are alot of sheds found by homeowners in their back yards?

just some pics of some birds i felt like sharing
landtracdeerhunter replied to G-Man's topic in Turkey Hunting
Very nice pictures and thanks for sharing them. The second to the last night of deer season, I had turkeys flying up in the trees above me. They were coming in to eat wheat. Think they were teasing. Can't wait till May 1st? -
New bill for NY disabled hunters.
landtracdeerhunter replied to sits in trees's topic in Bow Hunting
This is something that is really needed. Hope it is not tabled like other bills in the past. Would this have enough votes to make it to Governor ? Any ideas to his position on this matter? -
What a big show. By the size of their vendor list, can you view everything in one day? I know my sons and I went to Cabela's in Lancaster P.A. a few years ago, and that took hours to look at.

Just think how much bigger that buck will be this year. -
The ghost I could never see in person
landtracdeerhunter replied to brandonjp's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
I don't know how many of you have been with your kids when they harvest a deer. The look in their face, well to those that have, know that look. The ones that haven't experienced it, I don't want to spoil the future for you. You'll never forget it. Then when you see them hold 190" of rack, that just adds all the more! I just can't put it in words. -
I like the Moultrie IR cameras. The time between multiple pictures takened is alittle slow 10-12 seconds, but can't beat the camera for the money, $149.00.

Like mentioned above, I do about the same things. The only thing I might add is using Team Fitzgerald Deer Dander. I go through about three bottles of the stuff. I have actually led bucks to my stand. Use it on the ground and in ground blinds. Spray it on my boots upon entry into the hunting fields and let it do the job. Ok I'm done sounding like a commercial. lol

Easton ST Epic 400 Arrows with plastic vanes. Rage 2 blade 100 grain for clear shooting lanes, Steel Force Sabertooth HP 100 grain for less than ideal shooting conditions. Still debating which broadhead works the best.

Nice buck. Seeing deer like that would really make my day. Their are very few up in our area. They show up where no hunting is allowed in the suburbs, but very limited. Definitely worth every penny to have mounted. Congrats

I would shoot it with 8 pts. or more like we do with the common looking deer here. It would deserve a trophy on the wall like some of the best deer we have harvested. A management doe would add meat to the freezer too. White or brown, still taste the same and makes good ground round.

I have a Winchester Kodiak which I believe become a C.V.A.. My son has one too. Nice accurate shooting gun. I think it was made in Spain. What happened to Winchester muzzleloaders? Did C.V.A. carry this model over to one of their newer models?

Highs and Lows From Your Archery Season
landtracdeerhunter replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in Bow Hunting
I know how you feel. We had three years like that. 1000+ hours. The best part was when my son harvested the deer in firearms season this year, not the neighbor. All that work paid off. Now we have to start over with a new animal. And start we will. We were already discussing names today as we were taking down some cameras. What to call the next one. -
From September 27th to December 31th 2010 in the whole state. What has been some of your best experiences and some of your worst. My best is seeing some of the best bucks of all ages throughout the season. Got some nice camera footage. My worst was when I shot at a nice buck on November 2nd, with no recovery. My son seen the same one, ( we hope) days later with a severe limp. I failed to get a deer again, but thats ok by me. All in all, what a great season to be out!

I have shed hunted for a number of years with no luck. I follow buck trails in the snow, nothing. Soybean fields are the best place to look, so I've been told, still nothing. We have bucks in the area, because new rubs are showing up even after New Years. Whats the secret, if any, of finding that needle in a haystack?
