Arrows, what are some good ones? Anyone buy new ones recently?
landtracdeerhunter replied to burmjohn's topic in Bow Hunting
What brand have you tried-used? Are the results the same? -
Check out the difference in size of these two fawns. Notice the date and time. What do you think- Two different mothers?

Boy we know exactly how you feel. We had a 1 year old Moultrie IR camera stolen 2 years ago in August. Filed a police report, for what that was worth. Police said it was getting to be more common today. 200 bucks out the window. Today, if they want the camera, they have to smash it, to get it off the tree.

Shotgun Slugs
landtracdeerhunter replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Remington copper sabots didn't work in our 12 or 20 ga. Remington guns either. The Lightfields work good enough, until you shoot the Brenneke KO sabots. Pattern great with tremendous knock down power. -

Stick with arrows that work for you. We're going out to get ST Epics in black from Easton at 8 bucks a pop. Feather vanes for everyone, except me. I run the blazer vanes, because my whisker biscuit rips off one side of the feathers. Thinking about updating to lighted nocks. Are they worth the money? -

I have sent an email to Brenneke U.S.A. in Clinton, Iowa. I'll let everyone know the reply when I receive it. -
Shotgun Slugs
landtracdeerhunter replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Was going to start a new thread but, found this old one. What has happened to Brenneke shot gun shells. The guns shops in my area said they have gone out of business. On our last box of 12 ga. 3" KO Sabots which shot the best out of our guns. Price on our boxes read $ 6.99 to give you an idea, the last time we purchased. -
I would rather have my Winchester muzzleloader in my hands than my shotgun. My oldest son doesn't even own a shotgun, he's all muzzleloader. We shoot 240 grain TC sabots with 100 grains of powder. Use to use Winchester sabots, but are tough to find in our area nowadays.

Little worried on this.......
landtracdeerhunter replied to growalot's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
She may have worms or maybe fawns drawing her down, or both. They can be pulled down pretty low with fawns. -
The data is well over 10 years old. Do you think N.Y. has gained or lost placement?

About 4 years ago, I planted a mixture of lettuce, sugar beets, turnips, rape, and collards in July. It grew very nice. The 2 acre plot was visited alot from the time I planted the seed in the summer right through hunting season. Turkey love lettuce. Deer ate everything. The only thing that I don't plant every year now is the rape. Nothing eats it, and it spread all over the farm like a weed. Every year when the ground is worked and it rains on it, up pops the rape. Now, I leave out the rape and replace it with cabbage. We do have acres of alfalfa, clover, harry vetch, corn, soybeans, and wheat, so they have their choice. A frost seems to excell the beets, turnips and cabbage adding more sugar content for the deer.

I agree with you 100%. Our hunting methods may not be agreed upon by some hunters, but it's something that can be taught to our younger generation if they are willing to learn.

A very nice story. To share with future youth hunters (possibly) is terrific. More of this needs to be done. Looking back at all the nice bucks my two sons and I have harvested, it was all in inclement weather conditions. Some people say you need alot of hunters out to push the deer around, we think just the reverse with several on the wall to prove it. With rain and wind, you can throw most of the other tracking methods out the window. The risks are greater to lose an animal in the rain, but the rewards can often pay off. There's nothing like that special feeling, more unique, in not so ideal conditions.

Work is paying off....

You have put in a ton of work and it is paying off with great results. I'm still working on harvesting my clover fields if it ever stops raining. -
sprayer advice
landtracdeerhunter replied to outdoorstom's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Sprayers that have sit for an extended period of time can be quite a bit of work to get up and running. If the unit has not been cleaned properly after it's last use, white residue forms on the inside of the plumbing causing alot of plugging on start up. Remove some select orfices and inspect the screens for this condition. Also, it depends what chemical has been used in the tank. Fall out from exsisting chemical residue can affect some crops you intent to spray. Sounds like a fair price if pump and boom controller and in working order, assuming that the booms are on the back. Their is a good source of information on the tractorsbynet.com web site. -
Woods Management
landtracdeerhunter replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Thanks for the replies. Growing in the smaller parcel is shag bark hickory, white and red oak that seem to be great for red, gray, and box squirrels, turkey, rabbits, grouse, and yes, even a pheasant or two. Alot of song birds are also common. The deer funnel in all year, but, desert is great for them in the fall with all the nuts. The thorn apples lose their apples and leaves in late August. They don't seem to do much except serve as a reminder where not to lean. The brushey area are full of red willow with small ash trees. The deer like those areas for cover. The forester idea sounds great and is takened into consideration. The food plot where the skidder drove sound like that could be some great habitat. I have fence row oak trees that supply a nice amount of seedlings. It's amazing how many nuts grow there without being consumed. -
I would like to get some ideas from anyone who has done, or is thinking about this type of improvement. All input is welcomed. I have a 7 acre parcel that is thriving with oak, hickory, and maple trees. Biggest are about 2 foot on the butt. It has a few thorn apple trees. The woods is bursting with wildlife and the habitat is excellent. I have another parcel which is about 10 or so acres, that have a few hickory and maple. There are also a few ash which are dieing out, but is loaded with thorn apple trees. They are about 30+ feet high. One side boarders a neighbors woods of about 100 acres. Now the idea was not to get rid of all the thorn apples, but rather thin them, so I can establish more oak and hickory. The idea is not for lumber, at least not for my lifetime. Improving habitat for all wildlife is the main idea here. I have about 100 oak and hickory trees about 2 foot tall ready to be transplanted this spring. There are two spots that have heavy under brush. Should I leave this?

I have a few hens for fresh eggs, with, yes, one rooster. A few slip away and 21 days later, walla -
Every year, a chicken or two comes up missing. This year was no exception. They hatched out June 22. A little later than normal. I would like to share some pictures of the first hatching. Every year when they surface, I still get excited.

2011 Trail Cam Pics - Otsego County
landtracdeerhunter replied to Vincent's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
That is a house cat. Very tough to tell if that is the same deer. Can't answer. -
Great Trophy. All the hard work paid off. Nice to see a daytime picture before he was harvested. That doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes, the nasty weather is the best hunting. Thanks for showing.

We summer fallow some of our fields that we intend to put clover in. Reduces weed numbers greatly without chemicals.
