Cut down trees in a plot or not?
G-Man replied to corydd7's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
By putting them in or around the food plot you can make the deer feel.safe.and enter and exit the plot close to your stand location.. -
I'm in front of beer taps...

They are very shade tollerent and will shade out all your valuable and non valuable prefered browse species.. They stop forest regeneration ..as for predates tub trees.. I'm sure they would much rather rub on cedar oak cherry..but they have to be regenerating for them to become prefered. Not a nutritional plant by any means...

Striped maple...also know as moose wood.. Tear it out of the ground....

Can I be number 6?

The last 6 kids I've taken out are not mine..the youth weekend let me take a kid who's parents don't hunt out in a much more controlled environment. In a non vompwtitive Weekend . They usually have so much fun they get their parent interested in trying it themselves.. I don't see it as a hand out but a chance to get them involved before sports school. And technology takes over

I really think that people tend to stay to far from a roosted bird I like to get around 50 yards a few soft.calls and they land in range...I hear 100 yards a lot that's to far and to much can happen inbetween you and the bird.
-
A few soft tree calls .then quiet for true first light..a fly down cackle while.flapping a wing or hat.. Folowed by a frw purrs and clucks..and scratch the leaves..toms fly down and land in your lap...

While the next experience will be different .. 5 years of youth hunt and gaining experience can yeild a life long hunttling addiction if done right..I had the privledge of taking a young ladies out for 4 years of youth turkey.. 1st year I did all the leg work and calling. 2nd year she learned how to use and call with a push pin with me as back up..I still did scouting .. 3rd..she learned more calls and came roosting. 4th she fully participated and I was video man.. This training and experience as well as other early oppertunities yeilded this Now a college graduate I know many guys who would love to have gotten this let alone done it by themself

Youth season falls into prime breeding (April) the reason we have regular season in may is most breeding is done and toms are harder to call.. By having the youth season when they do it gives new hunters a very good experience with out interference from the larger population of regular hunters after a receptive bird.. That is why the season is always a full weekend before regular season.. As most hunter will be out this weekend disturbing bird while scouting.. The extra time between youth and regular season allows bird to calm down and return to regular patterns.. I kind of wish our deer seasons and time off between them..two weeks off between bow and gun would do Wonder s... Especially if it was closed 1st two weeks of Nov...

And that's why I always shoot a hen in the fall... One less to deal with in spring
