  1. i dont understand the scent free craze. the largest bucks evertaken were done without it, as were hundred of thousands of others, probably millions. study the wind, just about everyone forgets this. scent is present with all these gadjets in place. save your money buy land,a new gun, boots, ect you'll still be sucessful.
  2. with all the rain and cool teperatures this year, nesting seems to be extremly poor this year. i have only seen 1 hen with poults and that was last week. the poults looked like they were only 2 weeks old. resulting from 3rd or 4th nesting attempts. toms are still strutting for hens in fields along the tracks i run to ohio. looks to me like another low turkey population this fall. i wont be surprised if nwtf tells us not to hunt or shoot hens this fall again.
  3. deer seem to be attracted to logging , especially in winter. watched a doe and one of her off spring watch us cut trees last winter , and start browsing on the top as we were cutting up the trunk for firwood. less than 40' fromm the running chainsaw.
  4. good bug net/protection. most important.
  5. redo it with pex pipe,(flexable plastic) fast easy and cheap and not worth stealing
  6. redo it with pex pipe, fast easy and cheap
  7. do you have a cable across driveway? if so take it down..big advertisement your not there.. lights on timers as well as a radio even during daylight. if you have neighbors have them leave tire tracks in and out. the cable is worse idea ever.. ask any local..if cables are up owner isnt there, free hunting.!! believe me they know if its down they dont know if you left for 5 min or hrs..and find a clunker and leave it in driveway put old plate on it .
  8. your gobbler oaks are setting nuts for next year! That's good!
  9. After last year this is a cornucopia of food for game, hard, soft mast is everywhere!. Make hunting tougher for sure. But gold to see some mast after several years of low/none
  10. Thanks, I know the light barrel and sport models don't interchange but want sure with wing master. I checked their site and it seems they are same gun , wing master being bird barrel, and express being slug barreled
  11. Access is allowed by wind direction. 1 Stand means only hunting 1x a week. If you scent up the plot going in or out your wasting your time, any bigger buck will be gone.hunting a weekend 1 stand is not enough. 3-5 days of rest between hunts from it is what you should try for. Stand should be set up for prevalent wind direction anaccess route should allow an undetected approach to stand ,even if its longer than walking down the logging road and involves crossing creeks/swamp. Sm plots and small properties have a lot in common and it doesn't take much to disturb them. You may want to rethink The plot and look for approaches to it that are maybe more ac.accessable. Its always better to have a stand in a place where you can kill a deer that you may see, than in a place to see deer that you may get. Lots of big trees ddoesn't give you lots of stand placement options. If you draw a circle 18 yards from the spot you want to hunt. Your stand has to go on the downwind side of that circle. That's your tree.... doesn't matter if it a big strait one or twisted to heck or all Limby. If its not possible to set up in look for another target spot. Don't just hang a stand close. Its the detail you adhere to that makes the difference in killing a good buck or not,
  12. Access to and wind direction should be your main concerns. You didn't say how the sign was other or in surrounding area.. is it a secluded plot or on edge of woods.. it all effects when deer will use it and where they come from.
  13. Looks like deer droppings (clumped from eating grasses) the last looks like an Osage orange. Check out some videos from Netflix. Bow hunting October whitetails 1 and 2. Will show and teach you a lot and can watch over and over. Some old tinks videos are quite educational as well as quest videos. Much of the new stuff is entertainment and not really worth watching imo
  14. Anyone know for sure if an 870 wingmaster barrel will fit an 870 express? can't find a bird barrel for a 20.ga express. Would Like to make a deer gun more multi purpose. Any help info would be appreciated. The gun is a 2 3/4 and 3in.reciever. I prefer used but would buy new as well.
  15. I agree I even have a friend that bought. ATVs.. hate to think how much that was. then complains he can't afford property. Buy the land first, something to improve it with, then they toys... I know more people with ATVs and no or little property to ride them on..then they wonder why people don't like them or kick them off their land... Again great to see another. 3 Pt spreader!!!
  16. I have a sm, tractor that is 50in wide (outside wheel dimentions) and can get it in where any atv can go, a field cultivator, and spreader, 4ft brushhog, and rear blade, and got it all for for under 3000.00 and have now owned it for 20 years.. . and the most important thing to remember is tractors are built for pulling /working ground. atvs are not. I do not see 20 year old or even 10 year old atvs with good enough transmission able to pull anything, but I do see 60 year old tractors that have been left out with rusty sheet metal fire right up and work all day.... I am always asked why I don't have an atv..I really have no use for one and money is better spent on other more useful things. Atv's are pretty much for enjoyable riding, even the new s x s really are not worth it. can pick up a used wrangler cheaper and do more with that than utv.if you want a work vehicle. the new ones are as much as a damn car.....and won't last nearly as long.
  17. most hunts I have been on have been 1000-1500 or so,,thats only 25-40 a week. bear hunting is probably the most affordable hunt there is.
  18. if your postponing it look into a spring bear hunt in maine or new brunswick. fairly inexpensive , guide servies are good there and the guide will assist in skinning butchering and retrevial. new york is more of a chance into a bear state. jmo
  19. That was my 1st purchase of a hunting/outdoor mag as well, still pick it up whenI see it. Great magazine to learn trapping sets from and general how to...
  20. Why not 390 to 86west to 90 west, it connects in pa and there is no traffic any time and no tolls?
  21. fish stocking, so many cases of whirling disease in hatcherys, its on its way out as well. hate to say.
  22. Well when your legislators are taking email and input from other groups and not listening to DEC biologists and employees, (votes are more important to them than a gov agency employee that they can replace by appointment.) Moneys air allocated for certain programs by laws, not by how DEC wants of would see fit. Or crossbow would be in. Yes more programs are needed but again funding mandates come from laws the Dec doesn't have it own separate fund to do habitat management or youth programs. It get conservation fund and general dollars. Not only to monitor game but soil air and water, it is not a separate game commission and due to the laws its hands are tied in what it can and can't do, like why in some counties there is no youth hunt. (Local county law forbids it) its not an excuse its fact...
  23. the biggest problem is the dec doesn't make the laws or seasons it just inforces them. they are made by out reps in Albany, (follow crossbow at all if dec could they would be used now) we don't even have a hunting season every year until it is passed by Albany(lifetime licences are really a 1 year gig once you know that) the dec needs to be freed of the poltitical rulers and them maybe they could manage and do things that everyone on here wants.. don't blame the dec ...its Albany that is the problem.
  24. Any stocking program that ends up being put and take is a bad idea. do what nwtf did. trap and transfer , close season, let game get established, open season as populations permit. this is a study area and it holds the best habitat for pheasant. so it habitat can hold them stock, close season and see if they make it. its the same as moose in adk park. season is closed when big enough population hunting will be opened on limited basis. trout, salmon, pheasant all should follow that plan, or reduce limits so populations can grow. a little self sacrifice will allow a self sustaining population to be used in a responsible manner. (deer and bear were established the same way in this state and hunting opend when populations were big enough). and cut our taxes and fees by $$ I ve tried for years to get phesants to stock at my place to see if they could become established, the answer I get is oh we can stock them and then we'll hunt them... not what I'm looking to do at all. I've even offerd to buy the birds but wont sell them as they are for stocking and hunting... guess I need to find a private person and pay to raise them properly and soft release into the wild.
