Try Dunstan chestnuts (99% american) they Are blight free, and do not suffer off years or frost out because they don't flower till julyJuly. Produce large volumes of nuts in 5-8 years. Need at least 2. For pollination. And they are so sweet to eat, deer will walk by apples and corn to get to them. You thinned your woods..did you make or mark off a sanctuary area 10 acres or so of thickest area you have ,allow no hunting or walking thru it. That will do more for your place than anything else,as long as you don't shoot into it and leave it alone!!

tractor, geared transmission. lot of good brands out there. look for 3 things. loader lift capacity, 3pt lift capacity, and overall weight. I dont support one brand over another but as an example (i went looking with a neighbor last year) a kioti 38 hp, has a lift capacity of 2000 lbs. while to get same lift capacity from kobota you need to go to a 50 hp model. capacity is usually a factor of gallon per minute on the hydrolic pump. there are big price driiferences to go up in hp.. how much do you need? 2 bottom plow 30hp, or 15hp per bottom (mulboard plow if your not sure what a bottom is) 5' bush hog 20-25 hp gear box on most that size. 8' disc 35 hp or more. the heavier the tractor the more traction you get(. think of putting weight in back of your pickup in winter.) if the tractor weighs a lot to begin with you may not need to load the tires costing you extra money. if your going to push trees 12in or so over, or do large plots 5 acre or more 55hp and up is what you would want to start with so u can use bigger equipment. good luck and dont get caught paying to much for a brand name!! get a utv or golf cart to tour your well groomed trails when your done!!

the only way i can tell a dominate buck is to see group interaction, other bucks will put their heads down and get out of its way. once in a while someone will challange him, it may have a smaller rack, even a smaller body, a lot of it has to do with agressiveness. lots of big bucks in the mid west are pushed off their home ranges by younger more agressive bucks. you cannot stockpile big bucks on a property unless its high fenced. once in a while you will see an article where a hunter tried for a buck for years only to have it killed a farm or two over by someone who had never seen it before. there is even speculation that some large racked bucks do not participate in rut activities at all so they are never dominant.

How many does do you harvest???
G-Man replied to Pav2704's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Most ratios are 1 buck.for 3 or more does. So if your seeing 4 buck you probably have at least 12 doe and fawn.. so start. with take 4. They say. 1 to 1 Is best ratio but nearly impossible to.reach IMO. I try to take 10 doe a year off my place and would adjust that number if neighbors took more or less. -
8 Guys regula with 2 guests on weekend or two , on 274 acres, managed heavy for game..

Use to fill 5 plus a year, now 2 or 3, one always for myself and the others go to family. Brothers and friends have become better hunters soI don't need to fill them to give away. Camp usually ends up with 18-21 a year between the hunters (usually minimum of 10 doe)

there will be more of these pics..nice to see but, no person in them means bs in my opinion. i know a guy that kills a big buck every year, has pics as proof.. only problem is they are always hanging in a meat cooler and hes never in any of them!! I do not know anyone who doesnt pose with their deer out where they got it, or on the lawn when they get it home if they were alone so wife/friend kid can take the picture... Another guy i know kills a slob every year, problem is the deer is always on floor of greenhouse in a non hunting area where nuisence tags are issued to owner of greenhouse, he doesnt know i have friend that lives there behind greenhouse/nursery property and he has photos of every deer this guy has killed in his backyard, even though he tells me he killled it miles and miles away . Look at the details if something seems goofy it usually is..

i like how is always some state route, but there are driveways and nice mowed lawn in the back ground, never a person's face in the shot, or car licence plate.... lol if i found a buck like that i would be in the pic or it would be in back of my vehicle with claim tag on it....lol

anyone else use a 45-70 for hunting. i was given a few boxes of hornady 250grain flex tip bullets. i have only reloaded 300 grain plus. any one try using these in a rifle? care to share your reloading info?!

Climbing sticks/separate sections/screw in steps?
G-Man replied to nybuckboy's topic in Deer Hunting
I really like the separate small ladder section. Just be sure to get ones with clips on straps rather than sliding belt through a buckle. Gives much more versatility on crooked and Limby trees. For hangons . -
I just saw a buck i had on camera 2 years ago didn't get pic of him at all last year and this year no pic but hes there... now if he only shows himself during the season.

if your pins are at angle your canting the bow.most sights now have level to help correct this, and a in rt or left is usually very slight torque on wrist. with todays compounds once the pins are set the hard part is really over...

I use to wrestle a 10pt called bucky in losson park years ago. people fed them back then and deer would eat out of your hand. I still go there (now stiglemeyer park) to tune my grunt tube and practice calls and study deer reactions to them. I distinctly remember the power that buck had while holding on to its horns and thought if it wanted to kill me it probably could.

close practice especially from a treestand is very helpful especially at 3 d target so you can see where your arrow would enter and exit. most people that dont practice will get a high single lung shot or if they are lucky a spine. getting a deer close is fun, and i have taken several under 5 yards off the ground walking and from a stand. keep practicing but try 1 shot at a target. draw aim and release.. dont hold forever or think about it.. for those who love groups ...robinhooding arrows is fun until your buying a new dozen cause yours are all split and shattered.

i've learned to careless about getting a deer, i know my property and hang stands in the natural funnels. i pass many bucks and lots of does. i just enjoy seeing them. Getting one is a bonus. not hard to do.. would of broken 100 in a few years if i fill all my tags like i use to. now that number is meaningless to me. i just enjoy myself and am much happier for it and success seems to follow regardless.
-
maybe.. i dont really take stock in early photos. but its part of its home range and there is alalways a chance.. older bucks become very good at avoiding the cameras... or you might get one that likes its picture taken.

Mineral sites are illegal in NY. If your looking for spring planting turning under old sod now is a good idea. Sounds like a clover or alfalfa mix(if dryer/quick draining soil is preseNt. ) should be a larger planting, acre or so, i would concentrate on brassica, or a corn soybean mix for late season. Perhaps a cerial grain with clover or alfalfa planted with it is a good idea as well. Oat,n clover do well.

you need to access what surrounding land use/provides the deer and plant what is missing. if you have a large ag fields around you but they are all harvested early, you may want a late season food source, standing corn/brassicas. if your land is covered in forest and not much else, a year round mix may be what you need. there are options for everything and soil type and moisture will tell you what specfic type of seed. as always the better prepared seed bed the better the planting will do.

10 people over 350 acres. stands are set for bow (early and rut) and gun, and a few for muzzleloader. you can do it with less if you keep moving them but i have the stands so hang them all at least a month before bow season starts. less disturbance in woods.
