the inital resuly would be older bucks but due to high hunter harvest rates soon a 6 pointer that will always be a 6pt will soon be dominate breeder as he cant be touched, problem with antler restrictions in high harvest areas.. age is much better but shoot what your happy with.. more regs and rules to comply with.

See if this makes sense to you
G-Man replied to wheelieman's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
The media only shows blood n guts..never the good that is done by police or by regular citizens.. so if all you watch is the new..your indoctrinated by doom and gloom. -
if just ear tips(silk) are gone when green=deer damage. stalks pulled over when green=coon. large area of stalks pulled inward toward center of circle=bear. when brown ear missing=deer, squirrel. stalks pulled over coon, bear in circle again. ear tip kernals missing and husk frayed..blackbird / possible turkey.

marlin 1895 guide gun in 45-70. leupold vxIII scope 325 gr lever evolution ammo.
-
dissagree, to many hunters in this state herd would be higraded in a few years
-
i truly believe a 45-70 can take any game in the world at 200yards and in... was designed to penetrate 4 in of solid oak and kill soilder on otherside at 600 yrds in volly fire. shorter range rifle balistically but one of the best brush/penetrating rounds for use in thick cover.. heck they killed buffalo with it in the 1800's why not a cape buffalo.. i've never had to track a deer with it yet. 250 grain were free and i shoot 5-6 boxes a sitting while plinking so it will be my plinking round....lol

Mount it but don't hide fact it was escaped game farm buck, very surprised it didn't have tag in ear as required by law. perhaps more to story than being told hunter shot and then saw tag and removed(thought he'd get in trouble) then acted surprised he found out game farm buck? Think it was last year girl shot huge buck with tags in its ears she thought it was part of game department study, found out it was trophy breeder from farm 10 miles away..i guess she could of been made to give it back to game farm as it was marked as livestock but they let her keep it if I remember article from mag correctly.

Asking for opinions is a good thing, lets you know if your decide to pass it that maybe others would as well, after taking a lot of deer my interests have changed where I am getting more enjoyment in scouting and making set ups for others to use, and am estatic when they connect. unfortunately it seems true 10% of hunters take 90% of the game. little knowledge or help is passed on to new .inexperienced hunters. so they turn to media and become experts by watching hunting shows and whitetail, then they tell you how nys can have bucks like the Midwest!! While they themselves have harvested under 20 deer in their lifetime. and the progression of learning to fill tags/becoming more selective in harvest and weapon used / to passing on the knowledge you aquired in a lifetime is broken . I haven't seen a hunting show that shows scouting and how they decided to hang the stand since the late 80's early 90's ..its all become about the harvest and look how big. so younger(not age experience)hunters think that's all there is to it. BY the way the rule on my place is shoot it if your happy with it just don't complain or whine when someone shoots something bigger. its fun watching friends become more and more selective as the years go by, even the meat hunters in camp have figured out a 4.5 year old gives a lot more meat than a 1.5...

bear are very courious and one of the best attractiants for them is a poopy diaper/ I would bet bear. porkys would chew it in place, not move it..
-
size of fruit and drop/maturation are factors as well. a wolf river variety is huge 2 lbs or more per apple deer cant get them in their mouths. small varieties winesap are much more edible. you can find early mid and late bearing apple varieties on line and thru national arbor association, I recommend getting your information there but buying localy as trees have adapted to your zone by growing there.

called hornady and got help there. 250 is new load pushes 2400 ft per sec.. good for plinking and I love to plink with it!!, staying with 325 gr ft for hunting.

Rain Rain Go Away, Come Again Some Other Day!
G-Man replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in General Chit Chat
Suppose to be an all day event...next week looks nice... at least your scent will be washed off everything... -
Summer patterns are ending, but if there are a lot of camps around the woods are being intruded in by humans big time, riding quads, putting up stands, scouting, hunting small game. Heck just fire in long dormant chimneys, let alone car doors slamming. Leaves starting to fall, white oak dropping nuts, farmers starting ttime harvest crops, people out spotting at night... pics are good indicators of what's around, but seasonal shifts and others factors make deer move a bit I'm sure they are near by just a little move for food or away from disturbance.

A fishing pond by the house is fine, but build it properly and stock it properly as well. I unfortunately had a food plot in old pasture near road.. it attracts a lot of road hunting, had to plant screen of trees and do a lot of patrolling (neighbors helped) to get it to stop. Posted signs only keep honest people honest. I would maintain the old pastures with mowing. Lot of good natural browse. I would concentration your plotting efforts near the center of property. Again prevalent wind direction dictates a lot.....

Can any one age this buck and would you shoot him
G-Man replied to apoallo's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
1.5 ..personally i wouldn't but I have shot many bucks like that in my youth, you have to start somewhere. The rule at my camp is shoot it if your happy with it, but. Don't complain or gripe when someone shoots something bigger. -
The trail system should follow your property lines first and foremost, for ease of patrolling and posting. A sanctuary area should be set aside near the center, consisting of thickest cover on your property.this is the most important thing IMO. As large as you can with edges well defined by trails/marking. No hunting or tresspass allowed in this area. I'd make it as large as you can maybe 30 acres. Food plots can be created in the semi open area by mature mixed woods. Trails to these areas should be on down wind side of the plots created for ease of access to them pushing brush into a natural fence on down wind side to make the deer walk around the end or thru a stragicaly placed gap. Plots should be odd shaped, kidnybean. Tri pointed, L shaped. A lot of thought should be put into them. You only need 5 acres to 8 acres of them. 1/2 acre plots-3 acre... A pond water source is a good idea but creek supplies that already. Money could be spent in a thinning project and in an orchard/orchards creation instead.

nope, good 2 year old maybe less than average 3...

Neighbor at camp showed me this pic from last November

Mid 130's would be my guess top end.. -
i will agree with doc and phade to a point, if the farmer chops his corn and thats what all the fields are, the land becomes a stubble waste land free of food. todays harvest techniques do not miss much crop.(part of reason for lack of phesant as well) a food plot in farming areas is utalised heavy under these circumstances. Cover is also extreemly important (especially if included in a scantuary area) . but as to the original question yes putting in a food plot will be of benifit especially after crops are harvested. just watch any hunting show from the mid west ...the deer pour into the food plots because one the corn is cut the deer lose 80% of their cover and 90% of their available food. they dont tell you that but thats why they see all these big buck in open food plots... no food elsewhere, another reason you cant compare ny to states like iowa...
-
the area will need sunlight first and formost, this is usually a long process of removing all woody growth. you can do small plots in the woods(old logging roads) with just a garden rake to remove all the leaf litter. (best done in spring) and putting in clover. 50yrds is ok if the woods dont let you see in that far from field edge.. people love to see deer from a long way away.bad idea, the thicker the better. tough to miss when deer show themselves at under 50 yards. isolated food plots are awesome hunting plots. and are worth the hard work to establish.
-
yes cutting will effect movement, a lot has to do with how cleen the harvest is. chopping takes everything just leaves stubble. combining grain corn can leave some grain along with all the trash(stalks) . think if a deer lived in a 20 acre woods and the next day its completely clear cut and everything removed. a lot of deer will live/bed/feed in a standing cornfield. when its cut they will move to find cover.
-
depends on access, if along field edge 1x a week maybe , thick area 1 x for the season.
-
A hidden plot in a secure area will draw deer as they won't enter a open field till after dark. It won't be a feed plot but a pure hunting plot as the deer will just stop on their way out to farm field. Ideally it should have thick cover adjacent to it so the deer feel secure and far enough in the woods/ brush so deer get to it in day light. On the edge of a farmers field isn't as good as deer will still wait for darkness to enter
-
Depends if going for silage or grain. Silage should be starting soon, grain might not happen till Nov or later, depending on moisture content, drying and storage space. Let alone field condition.

Latest I've seen a spike shed was Oct 18th. most if not all the big boys are rubbed out now. Little guys take longer.. think they are repressed by presence of older bucks.
