I think the reason they want an early bow opener is to haevest more deer, period. we are all guilty of passing deer with bow in hopes for a good one. makes our harvest stats look bad as a group. so increase season and weapon choices(perhaps allowing crossbow) to get a larger harvest. As for the youth hunt... its a good thing and it won't wreck bowseason cause every "seasonal" landowner goes out scouting and sighting in guns all during bow and the deer are still there.

yep lots are up n around now

they are on mine in 9w, been cutting and selling ash for last 3 years while i can. had sections almost 90% ash. price is up a little right now. if your along a thruway or major route its not hard for these little buggers to hitch a ride you realy will notice areas in 2-4 years when the trees that are infested die from girdling... i even have seen asian longhorn beetles in my area, and they're supose to be closer to nyc..

yep them borers are everywhere already, for those that don't think you have them wait 3-4 years when there ded yoou'll know they were there..... took 1600 cord of ash out for firewood already, and trying to get what i can out of them saw log wise before they are good for nothing...

not enough info, age of shooter, legal or not distance, sounds like kids f**ing around. esp if police picked up arrows n bow around neighborhood i know i wouldnt leave a hunting/ target bow out lying around, real question should be where were parents of shooter if it turns out to be a kid and i would bet $$ on that. As for distance i could be 200 yards away and still hit some one walking in a neighbor hood, plus town prolly already has no discharge of firearms law on books and yes that includes bows so legal distance is still not an issue as it was prolly illegal to discharge to begin with. Hope there is an update to this...

Had one tear up my 3d archery target and "eat out " its stomach area.. then dragged it into woods 100 yards.. they say they are the largest predator of deer especially fawns!

Thompson Center not what they used to be

Why not get the barrel cleaned and camo dipped by a competent gun smith, if the problem is in the ss it self should correct the problem and still look good with your frame n stock? -
I plant 28in rows i do not recomend less than 24". seed are 4in apart 1 1/2 in deep. I plant with 12-12-12. When plants have 4 leaves spray with round up or like product "gly" pronto is same stuff at only 1/2 cost. I add urea 45-0-0 at 200lbs per acre with a broadcaster after round up has taken effect usually about a week, if plants look purplish it needs more potasium n- p -k. you can spray again if weeds are out of control until about waist high. Important to mix you spray according to directions for corn(should be on label. they come in all different concentrates and need to be mix properly for right percentage..

buy the biggest you can afford, i use an electric big chief and am quite happy with it, wood and charcoal are ok but you need to be there to monitor temp. when doing a whole turkey wrapped in bacon and glazed with honey i want to start it night before, and wake up and have it done in time for lunch. I use apple wood for smoking the flavor is all there and no mess to clean up.. dump the chip pan and done!

Clovers, lime and fertilizer.
G-Man replied to erussell's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
clover like most plants will grow if slightly acidic. Lime just lets the plants absorb nutrients more effeciently thus resulting in more lush growth. think of trying to drink a glass of water thru a stir stick(acidic) or drinking straight from a glass(neutral). As for fertilizer 0 -10-10 or any 0-x-x will work just do not add nitrogen!!! the n-p-k is how fert is rated.Good white clover can reach 18 in to 24 in high..unless its being eaten and if mowed to keep competing grasses from growing 3- 5 years is possible . For killing clover and all other broad leaf use 2-4-d available in concentrate from a ag supply store its very inexpensive, mix it by direction or for ground ivy about 5% solution. this will killa dandelion, clover ,ivy and broadleaf plant in your lawn(its what you lawn company uses in so low % a solution they have to keep coming back..lol 5% you'll see the dandelion dead in a few hrs..lets all grass including crab grow only for broadleaf . -
For those of you that want to have a little redneck fun on a sunday afternoon.. http://cubamudfest.com its worth the drive!

remember to head back along almost the same route if possible a lot of birds will follow you like trolling silently following and when you head back toward them they get excited and gobble
-
dont use them... to many bad experiances. I set up so when bird can see where hen is supose to be its in range.
-
I tell them to read Bambi and sometime lend them one of my copies... not the disney version but by felix salten. its the most grafic natural history book i've read. Makes a lot of points and takes the cute cuddlyness disney has imposed on anmals.Hard to imagine how disney made a move from this book based on life of the red stag in austria in the 1800's.

Amazing you got a bird that old and banded
-
Birds undisturbed will generaly roost in an area about 50-75 yards around for most of the breeding season. the only thing that changes this is wind, especially from an other direction. rain seems to move a bird further downhill but in the same area usually lower in the trees. If conditions are the same on sat as they were on thursday the birds will be there (assuming they aren't bumped by another hunter friday) even if they don't gobble! I 've killed a lot of birds by going to a known roost area with out hearing any gobbling.
-
People practicing calls, poor hatch, lots of hens, people walking their dog thru the woods are all contributing factors that may effect gobbling. Ny's season is set up to start after breeding has taken place. Broken/destroyed nests will result in hen's looking to breed again. Hang in there if hens are there so are the tom's.
-
Oh another good trick is to let the bird leave, then go to the last place he was and do a few soft calls. this is the hen going to him that he wanted he just didn't have enought patience.. a few soft calls often bring him back running as he feels bad he left a "receptive lady" behind. it also works when a tom is with hens and refuses to come in. let them leave and goto spot he last was with them. when his hens are bred he comes back looking for theon that was left behind. Good Luck!!
-
i like to turn around and call softly to a tom that is hung up, or even move 50 yrds away from the tom do a few soft calls and then sneak back to origional position. A bird that lives in and around fences, creeks, roads, ravines are use to them and will cross them at will. I am an agressive caller and do not like to just shut up. soft calls, purrs n clucks, scratching the leaves are a few things i use to bring the bird the rest of the way. As for not being a good caller, i've heard real hens that sound like a bunch of fingernails dragged over a chalkboard. The important thing is cadence n rythem. The most important thing is woodsmanship/ experiance if the bird regulary gets hung up on a bench, when you get a bird to answer from that direction, get to the bench before he does. birds are extreemly patternable when not pressured. if a bird get hung on a bench this year, even if killed another will take its place and prolly get hung in same spot next year. over the years you will learn where birds go when it rains, on a sunny morning rainy morning, roost areas in spring and fall. these experances are what will let you sneek in and set up in the proper areas to have consistant success. You hunt with a partneer place them 50 yards or more ahead of you calling in direction bird is coming from and have them sit quiet, the bird that hangs up from your calling 100 yrds from you may be in range of them..

almost had it planned perfect, got last 4 acre field disked was going to get drag and planter and rain came down... looks like maybe next weekend sunday looks best, sure hope mom doesn't mind me missing for a few hrs...

if you plant buckwheat now it would be mature and gone well before august. its usually planted in july around the 4th and is ripe for harvest by end of september. does not like hot dry areas, as it will boll.. Oats are good but i would mix with winter wheat vs. rye grass. gives a good stand in spring as well.
-
An ancient 2row 3 pt. jd 246-8 from 1950's, set at 28in rows. does a good job but parts are getting harder to find, so i have become become fairly adept at welding cast iron.. got my last field disked was going to drag n plant ant the rain came perhaps next weekend) if the ground gets a chance to dry.

Got 5 acres in with 4 more to go...hope the rain holds off till little later this afternoon. Clover i put in 2 weeks ago is germinating nicely. I guess the plots are in full swing now....
