  1. lots of birds around and in bear spring mountain.. delaware county if thats not to far to drive
  2. never plant till the oak leaves are the size of squirrils ears.................
  3. I usually get my corn seed from the nwtf as well, with cost of fuel and delivery this is the 1st year they charged for the corn seed. still 5 $ a bag is cheap for rr field corn. I believe chapters were limited to 30 bags to be distributed to is members. at least in wny.
  4. regular oats draw just as well amd when planted with clover gives a good plowdown crop. unless developed specfically for deer , biologic and wi are the only two i know that do this they are giving you farm seed at double the cost.. biggest thing with clover seed is not to over seed, if you look down and can see seed its to heavy!! it will come in to thick and crowdf itself out... if the bag says 1/2 lb to an acre 220'x220' use half that amount and cover the whole field with it then add rest and recover in opposite direction. over seeding is a big reason foot plots fail!!! oats are cheap 10$ for a 50 lbs bag will do an acre easy.
  5. for those of you that practice everday and do stregnth and conditioning and proper nutrition you might not have a problem for years, as for flat shooting i shoot at 52 lbs have 1 pin for 30 yards 2nd pin for 45. todays speed cams remove the need for a heavy pull, and arrow weights can be adjusted to minimum levels to increase flat shooting. For the average guy that pulls his/her bow out 2 months before season, keep pulling heavy and damage will occur. My uncle shot 80lbs for years shot tourniment year round as well, as age crept up shoulder damage occured, i'm with doc long term damage is going to happen, stregnth and conditioning, and proper nutrition may delay it, but our bodies are not built for repedative stress...
  6. new york has a law that limits your liabiltiy if someone gets hurt while tresspasing on your property posted or unposted...its about the only good law we have
  7. Well when populations were high, all the guys(10) at camp turkey hunted, when they are low its down to me and my brother. lots of factors in harvest data..... not calculated if you buy a licence you must hunt right?? not so i have lots of friends who buy turkey tags incase they see one while bow hunting in the fall. Never hunt in spring. Though the low population is caused by bad hatch survival, the harvest numbers do not tell the whole story. I hope we get a dry warm may early june, get those poults to survive a bit better!!
  8. Anyone i know who shoots over 65 lbs has blown their shoulder out at some point. uncle, cousin, friends with todays bows and proper shot placement 50 lbs does the trick everytime. My neighbor blew his shoulder out last year and had surgery and is seriously hoping he can draw back 50 lbs by the time season comes... I guess its a macho thing "more power", I've even taken an elk with my bow at 52 lbs... I'll keep mine low and be enjoying it my whole life with out the shoulder pain my friends and family are dealing with..

    Youth hunt

Couldn't hunt sat as i had to work sat and got out very late and didn't get to roost any birds for sunday, but got my friend to video the hunt on sunday with my friend and his boy after about a 3 mile run and gun we were able to get on some birds, they came hot and fast and i was glad it was a professional videographer behind the lens, i would still be setting up the camera by the time the hunt was over! At 758am great first ever kill on cam, with cutaways and an estatic hunter and father! The best was breakfast down in town and hearing the boy tell his story to everyone he knew that walked in the door! I was also funny to hear the father be jelous when he muttered under his breath I never got videoed for a hunting show..... pics to follow
  10. chicory will shade out a lot of plants, i am not a big fan of it. trefoil, clover, alfalfa is a good mix, each do better in differnt amounts of sun and when mixed in a plot that has multi shade /sun components it will grow in a great patch work effect each filling in the areas where they grow best. i personally would try to stay away from mixing grasses with broadleaf plants as it becoms a control issue for maintance and spraying. White clover will do fine with tre as long as you mow 4-6 in high. I find that a mowing in 2nd -3rd week of july lets the clover come on strong with new growth, leaving a field 8-10 in going into fall where the deer mow it down to the ground during the fall and winter. Not sure why everyone wants rye grass in their plot for deer its more for turkey imo and needs to go to seed to benifit. but birds will dine on the bugs and leaves of tre and clover readily. winter rye, or wheat, with turnips /brassicas will be a good draw in fall and winter.
  11. stays green, it very similar to alfalfa in it properties but seems to be more favored ...at least by the deer around my place.
  12. Ah if we could only get a few good hatch years in a row...
  13. They are the worst i have ever seen them this year! i never have them in my yard and they are everywhere!! hope they die off soon, maybe a good freeze will off them before season starts!
  14. I have had several hunting parnters the one's i dont see anymore are usually because they have passed away. I might not hunt with them for awhile due to their family commitments, but we always find time to slip in a hunt sometime during the season. The last one i havent hunted with in over 8 years becaused he move to iowa, i get an invite to go everyyear but find my vacation time limited, we still keep in touch via phone several times through out the year and everyone at camp waits for the night before opening day phone call and ribbing that has become tradition since he moved.

    gobbling

hear one let out one or two off the roost then nothing...
  16. buckwheat is deeprooted and fast growing, great for loosining hard subsoil., if planted in spring it canbe harvested by summer, if planted july its harvested in oct. i perfer a red clover /oat mix as the oats shoot up and provide shade for the clover to grow. it gives you a good foodplot of oats that fall and over winter/spring in clover , plow it under and your good to go! as for soil organisims, as long as you havent been spraying chemicals for years, and see lots of worms i wouldn't worry about it.
  17. latest ive planted wi clover is 1st week in may , it has more to do with collnights and moisture, both of which can start to diasspear later in may
  18. Birds foot and vetch are awesome together and are extreemly favored by deer and game . yes they spread readilly but seed can be expensive.
  19. Been hittem them possums hard in the fall, traping and shooting, biggrst egg eaters out there. never had em' around when i was a kid...
  20. if you want close pics where flash is to bright, just tape a small shelf 1/4 to 1/2 in sticking out (cardboard or plastic ) under the flash this will get some of the direct flash up off the ground when placed low on trees. but still lets the flash filter around it. ive done it for years otherwise the low ground creates a blinding forground and wipes out the pic. think of it as a blinder directing the light out rather than down
  21. nope. most nesting / laying is done by the time our may opener happens. Its the few that lose nests that you have to call aganst. Been hot n dry so lot have started, but cold n wet will draw predators that destroy the nest and re-breeding/ nesting takes place. that why late wet springs seem to work better at calling toms in. And that is the reson why you hear everone asking to move the season up into april birds are breeding laying then and much easier to call.
  22. Will Pm you a number of forester i use and highly recomend.
