DMP's selection available today - What did you get!?
G-Man replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
1 for 9w , 1 for 9h -
i'd cover the gap between the floor and ground around the outside with a roll of 1/4 in welded mesh screen. damn porkies will eat their way in from the floor up. love the glue and salts in plywood. And then throw a bucket of ramik poision bars under building as well to kill mice and such that get under your fencing.

deer was probably trying to reach browse and slipped got caught in crotch died and then eaten by coyotes/ other animals. i've seen it several times happens in winter a lot when snow is deep, once saw 7 deer up in tree tops next to railroad tracks in the spring 12-15 ' off the ground all dead cought in forks of trees, walked up snow drift to get at browse and snow collapsed under them leaving them hang from necks, legs and feet from crotches in trees. even had a turkey in delaware county back in late 90's dead wedged in a crotch of a tree, must of got stuck there while flying down about 6' off the ground. not a mark on it just dead with wings pinned up behind it like it was gliding down.. i highly doubt it was a cat or bigfoot just a sad accident. the ground looks hard and rooty around where it would of been standing on its hind feet trying to reach browse or stripping bark for food looks ,like a maple tree. (there doesnt seem to be much growth at ground level so that also leads me to believe it was raising the browseline and met its demise) plus private land and if was a cam set thats a lot of heaving to get a deer head/ neck several feet off ground . i'd use a rope ..

my friend has one, broke several tine a year, now he has me plow and disk for him... good for gardens and rock less fields i guess....

they might be silent to you and me but all cams seem to make some kind of sound maybe not a click but an electronic hum as ir bulbs warm or flash warms up as well. plus a lot use reflective materials over the lens or ir flash, don't believe it take a pic of it witha flash the moon n stars must reflect off it as well. the only time i don't get deer looking at a cam is if it is set above their sight line..maybe they think the flash is lightning... idk

i have gotten multiple repeat bucks on cameras, usually smaller bucks, but i have got some good ones up including 12 pics of a droptine i was fortunate to kill over several weeks. i usually can get a good buck at least 2x if i rotate or move the camera 90 to 180 degrees. bucks use different trails than does and they are faint, a good trail or heavy used food plot is usually made by a doe or doe family group. bucks have different nutritional needs/ and cover needs than doe during certain times of year. not seeing bucks in your food plot just means the buck isn't eating there, when bachlor groups break up they tent to wander quite a bit resulting in 1 trail cam pics of them walking thru. I would think that if you have a bachlor group consistantly on camera you probably have the best cover/food in the area. Food plots are only part of the equasion its not if you plant it they will come ....cover/security are another important componant often overlooked especially for bucks

as long as the skull plate is in good shape a mount can be done easily. would be best to give some photos of the deer at harvest to assist him/her so that the horns will be close to the way they came off the deer's head. this is usually done by measuring tip to nose while still attached to the head. You will also need them to buy a cape or wait and get a another deer and use the cape from that or from a friends buck this year they they don't plan to mount. good luck!

Lots of bears around but i believe still illegal to kill in the park... (much better to spend our tax dollars to trap and relocate them so they can be shot elsewhere...)
-
had a similar experiance last year, logger goes by camera at 1128 with a skid of logs, bear on same cam at 1131. i think they just get use to sound or the noise may of got them up and moving and just happend to go by camera.

its still hot n dry, even with recent rain, the bigger bucks don't move much and are in the creek bottoms where i live. deer flies are aweful this year, most deer are someplace cool, thick and resting and escaping the flies cornfields that are tall enough are a good respite from the flies and the heat.... Usually the bachlor groups are out in hayfields now but there is little regrowth due to lack of rain, heavy dewy nights will help that over next two weeks or so. Nut drop is occuring but most are not filled with "meat" look nice but are nothing but hollow shells. Clover is starting to perk up and grow with cooler damp nights. tough year to patter summer deer. but weather seems to be changing

nice to see how his body filled out, too much emphasis is placed on horn size, the body doesnt lie, nice filled out shoulders but still missing the sway back of an older buck 4+ year old. Its great watching bucks mature. I agree with you when you put enough time in an individual buck can be known regardless of antler growth.

Clearing Land? Tips Tricks Anything?
G-Man replied to burmjohn's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Make a fence/ wall out of the stumps/ brush on down wind side of plot causes deer to go around end of wall to ge to plot and gives you good stand locations, leave stumps tall 5' or as high as your loader or bucket or yourself can reach so you can push/pull over. stubborn stumps are easily removed with quart bags filled with fertalizer mixed with diesel fuel, and a cannon fuze, and common scence to get far enough away when it goes off! i cleared a two acre plot this way in 2 weekends with a 35 hp tractor. You can rent a dozer fairly inexpensive, and do a lot more in a short time even if you've never run one before. -
it won't effect hunting any more than the army of weekend warriors that show up 2 weeks before season, slam car doors, light fires in fireplaces/wood stoves, zoom around on atv, hammer nails in tree stands, do their "scouting". As for deer they will still be in summer feeding patterns more than likely or bachlor groups will just be splitting up first week of october. Why take a kid? why wouldn't you? the look on their face is pricless when they see some thing let alone if they get an opportunity to hunt, shoot. w I hope the dec closes bow season for 3 days so the kids can get their gun hunt in(get arounf the stupid legal language of guns not allowed in bow season.....
-
its probably a neighbor or neighbors kid if close to a line, take it and leave card, you might need to go on their property someday to recover a deer, better to find out who it is first, if its a problem neighbor/stranger contact dec if done again..
-
Here is the thing game belongs to the state, and dec officers are charged with protecting that game, yes they do go on private property, yes they need probable cause what constitutes that i don't know, but try growing a " funnny crop" on private property and watch how fast your rights are gone.... Or hang a deer in the back yard where tag isn't visable and watch how quick they come on "private property".

Planting large fruit trees
G-Man replied to Single_shot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
best bet is wait till fruit and leaf drop in fall and then plant.. good that they are in pots leave them there for now, and keep them watered.. -
I called the dec tipp line last year about road hunters, their action was fast, and the road hunters dissappeared... A good tip with accurate descriptions of vehicles/people will give best results. its a simple anonomus form you can fill out via the web as well.. they do take their job seriously but can and do get flooded with calls during the season, your best bet is to get them information now so thye have time to do their job
-
you may want to contact the dec in the area you plan to hunt, they might be able to set you up with landowners they themselves deal with or put you on the best plot of public land . list of offices are available on dec website.
-
Dec officers can come on your property at any time with probable cause. the game in nys belongs to the state. its now our deer r my deer. In europe you own the land you own the game on the land two totally different systems. sometimes we get them confused. I understand the want / need to get pictures. but this is an illegal way to do it in nys. As for the morality behind baiting that is another topic. As as i said before it is a nice buck...
-
trophy rocks are still illegal, but nice buck....
-
look like that to me as well, kept her winter coat a long time.....
-
It clumps fromm what they eat, drink. size will only tell you adult deer, or yearling, or large deer, if seen doe leave clumps in fall. a buck really cuts back on what its eating during the rut so there will be less bucks crapping in the woods.
-
had 14 hrs plus of rain here last evening and this am, man did we need it...
-
field is surrounded by open woods but get full force wind, i`m talking make your eyes sting wind... You can go over the hill in hign wind and see lots of deer , but the big guys will be in that field, its wierd....
