  4. Never give asking price they ask 2000 an acre everywhere these days..the land only seem to sell up to 1400 though... realitors need to make their profit as well i guess. wetlands, the fact you are buying a large piece drives the dollar per acre down.... especially if not doing a land contract...

    Decoys?

My advice is learn the woods. know where old fences, benches, creeks, roost areas, strut areas are and memorize them ..then stay out of the woods for a month don't practice your calling in the woods, as you will educate birds very quickly... Woodsmanship is 90% of turkey hunting , calling 1% 9 % dumb luck. If you know where and why the birds are traveing an area you can kill them without ever making a call. And you do not need to be a top caller. if a bird "wants to die" it will come in to the sound of your hand being scratched in the leaves. Have a great time learning and do not pressure yourself tryin to be like the pros on tv using decoys and calling like their life depends on it. I've sealed the deal on many of my birds never making a turkey vocalization but by just scratching leaves and making a fly down wing beat hitting my hat against my leg.

    Decoys?

Over the years it seems i've scared more birds with decoys than brought in. In all fairness i do hunt in woods. they might work good in a field, where they can be seen from a further distance..I don't miss carring them around though, for me they are the last thing i'll take with me.
  7. Gave it as a gift to a new turkey hunter...
  8. it is a field , national wild turkey emblem in stock 3in reciever 28 in vent rib barrel.
  9. good luck in erie county...... hope you put time gun in your possesion anytime with hunting/target.
  10. Anyone know the value of a 12 gauge charles daley pump camo turkey gun with 3 chokes? I know there are books for this i just dont have one. was given to me never been shot. trying to decide if its worth keeping or selling/gifting
  11. I think you'll be happy with the attack. i like my night photos..im sorry i like color... thats why i have a color tv. I personally think some deer are scared by the flash some aren't. but i have a few ir cams(was the thing to try ) and the deer look at tham cam as well so its still giving itsself away. Id rather see the color,i have bear, owls, racoons, possoms, skunks, even a giant toad on whiteflash at night and they are some of my favorite pics.. ir just don't cut it...

    172 buck

They are out there!! and a lot never get scored just sit on some hunter's wall or mantle or hang in the barn. Yes there are a lot of hunters out there that do not care about score!! My neighbor is one of them 76years young and has shot more big buck than most of us will see in our lifetime.. Racks just hang in the basement rafters.. has a good story to go with each of them. Most would make nys record book. a few are truly b&c ... to each his own.
  14. yep lee is a good company, dies are lifetime warrenty.
  15. Well i looked up my grandfathers old planting records. for those of you in wny this proves the ice boom causes a giant refridgertion effect. before the boom was put in the 60's and the ice was allowed to vacate the lake. his average date for planting was april 12th. After the boom it was moved to may 18th over a month later. Now with this mild winter and no ice on lake erie i would say that it would push the planting dates back to pre ice boom times. so a longer growing season, warmer temps in spring and of course tha means more bugs as there will be more for them to eat and it wasnever was cold long enough to kill off some of the over wintering eggs/larve. As for animal a quicker green up and warmer temps may help the turkey nesting season as well as newly hatched poults bugging. Deer were able to get to food all winter and a quick greenup and lack of winter stress should allow for larger body weights, and horns. Bad for me as my lawn will grow sooner/ faster resulting in more $ spent on gas to keep it mowed down something i'm not looking forward to at 4.00$ plus a gallon...
  16. Everyone talks about the hunters wanting this distance lowered... as far as i know it was presented by the dec... our/your officials. They must have safety/hunting/conservation/population control in mind. the question originally was if we as hunters agree with this. the poll stands at about 2/3 for 1/3 against. in a democracy i guess thats enough support shown for it. 500' for gun has been in place for years and the only safety issues i have heard about it i can count on 10 fingers. I do not see a problem with lowering it from safety stand poiint for bow. I have a lot of faith in hunting ed instructors (there are a few in this forum) in instructing to check your backstop and think safety first. Again there are a few bad apples the will do dumb things, they do it with gun and i expect it with bow. But the number of incidents in the cuffs n collars can again be counted on a few fingers. out of hundreds of thousands of hunters thats a pretty good safety record. Don't punish the majority for the mistakes of a few....
  17. i think the dec just wants a uniform law to enforce rather than each township enacting different regs for each situation. this probably covers the majority and allows for easier less expensive enforcement. kind of like corning coming up with no xbow for regular season last year ..enforcement nightmare for them..
  18. The dec must feel that 150' is safe to be recomending that. if we listend to everyone's safest idea we wouldn't have any guns/bows/hunting in general. or sports for that matter or cars that can go faster than 5mph(bumper rating for safety). Again there are laws for reckless endangerment. This propoasal simple puts the distance at a reasonable commonsence distance instead of lumping it in with gun. which is what happend when this law was enacted in the firstplace. A bow is not the same as a firearm, it doesn't use fire to project its projectile its max range is much shorter than a gun and as such the "safe" distance should be reduced. If you drive to fast in a neighborhood or swerve in a car you can get a ticket for reckless endangerment, same as if you shoot toward an unsafe backstop even if your 500'or more away and hit someones house with an errant shot.. Your concerns are covered by different laws! you can't have and all encompassing law for distance, safety, ethics it wouldn't be possible. Take the proposal for what it is reducing the distance to allow managment in areas that are now overly restricted by an out-dated law meant for guns.
  19. I do not practice with more than one arrow at a specfic target for that reason... it gets expensive fast. not that i am an awe inspiring shot but i've lost more than a dozen arrows to robinhood/ nock/fletching damage/ and cracking hangers over a period of years.. its not worth it to me ..the cost of multiple targets is quickly off set when looking at cost of replacing damaged/ ruined arrows..
  20. Yes!!! that is what this is about herd reduction in surburaban areas, getting away from the anti hunters banning all hunting in a lot of areas via 500' rule that was enacted for gun initailly and installing an appropriate distance for bow, that will allow these unmanaged areas to be managed thru bowhunting. THATS IT!!!. Whether or not the shot is ethical or should or shouldn't be taken is up to the individual. the distance law is that just for distance. not ethics,or i wouldn't do that so it should be law. Put put the power back into the hands of the resident/ those who seek permission to hunt in these area's and remove it from the general anti/indifferent popuation in these areas who don't car for or do not want hunting of bambi...
  21. Well it will have more bugs as it never froze them out, but if your talking about deer..they shouldn't be as stressed so larger horns and body weight are probable..
  22. Bad hatches last 2-3 springs did a number on them. have seen 1 flock of gobbles (6) and one mixed about(50). there was a lot of food in the woods last fall and a lot still available to them there, apple seeds, nuts, ect that they can easily get to due to lack of snow this year. On the brightside if you do get a gobbler this year he's probably going to have a longer beard as they tend to loose the end of it it by dragging around in deepsnow where it can freeze and snap off!
  23. them californians are nuts.....
