  1. Latest i've ever seen horn on a buck was april. every deer is different, a lot of early(dec-jan) sheds are from highly stressed or injured deer ..i never like to find sheds early. the deer still not might of made it.Some drop jan - feb when testosterone levels drop from a well ballanced herd. If does are plentiful and keep cycling becuse there arn't enough bucks around to breed them , some buck will still have their horns very late, but if you find a fresh one dropped in march and you know he made it thru.
  2. Fasteddie has a valid point, these are not hunts as many would like to think they are, but population control must be done. i'd rather have someone who has purchased a licence do the shooting than pay to have it done by someone else. Doc, And if a property is surrounded with homes to be in that kind of a danger they could easily be arrested for reckless endangerment. there are laws on the books that already cover this. lowering the distance and having more regs put in to cover safety would be redundant. get rid of the distance that is seldom enforced and put a good reasonable distance in place to help control the population and cost of deer carcass removal.. Yes the bait and shoot programs get charged to donate to a food bank, so your paying someone to remove deer you can yourself, and then paying for processsing to give it to someone else.. guess what that means more tax dollars being spent foolishly. Even in non hunting areas your tax dollars pay to have the road kill haulled away and disposed of. I rather a hunter who wants the game take it at no cost to me
  3. I saw my first turkey vulture today near erie pa. thats the sure sign of spring to me, geese never seem to leave anymore.... won't be long before i'll be seeing them along the tracks in ny

    Iowa!!

My uncle has gone there and a few friends, a lot of 130-150 in buck. the big ones are just as rare there as they are here my uncle has passed on every buckhe's seen in iowa as he could shoot thesame caliber of deer here, he continues to go in hopes of being in the right spot right time while he's out there. All the media shows it the big ones, and i get a kick out of the mags...same deer in 6 different ones...touting the midwest as deer mecca. pa,ny has the same potential . just need to hunt smart and hard. the big difference there is hunter numbers. here in ny maybe 4-5 guys on 100 acres, there 1-2 on 1000. I truly believe more big bucks die from old age in ny than are ever shot. they get big by being smart and are maybe seen 1-2 times in their lives. i have found a lot of buck skeleton in my area that have 5-7in cir pedicals. never saw the hunting but find their bones ....

    Iowa!!

I have access to a private farm to hunt in iowa, a friend moved there 7 years ago bought 650 acres. Just not modivated to go for deer there are a lot here. Been thinking about going for phesant as there aren't to many here.. He sends me the regs and season information though every year for deer best part is he doesn't hunt!!. lots of short seasons and lots of opening days with time off inbetween each seson so deer can return to normal. I personally just cant see going to a different state for what i can hunt here... now if they had elk...
  6. To me the thing is people are already under 500' from a building target parcticing. all this will do is make a change so that there isnt a law on the books that just isnt enforced. 166yards almost 2 football fields. When i first started using a bow i use to shoot off my mom's back porch out toward the back of the property over 2000' deep. my aunt lived on one side and the neighbor on the other use to come and watch. but i was in violation even with 125' wide lots. the neighbors 2 doors down on either side could of complained. as could of the 5 across the street even though they never knew i was shooting in the backyard. This decrease in distance removes people who are in no dange and should have no say in what you are doing because your legal. yes there are bad apples but the benifit to the many many more out weighs the few. as for walking into someone shooting and being behind their back stop. wow... you really think there are a lot of idiots out there just shooting away?? next they will increase the gun distance to 1000' and even more people will be in violation just on the property they grew up /live on..
  7. unless your trying for a max powder load for speed, the velocities you will be shooting a bonded bullet will not be nessary.. A pure lead bullet would still stay together.
  8. doc, are you just lookng for something just to get a pic or something that will give a pic good enought to enlarge? 3 mp will usually give you enought to see and count points, 5 and up if your looking to print and enlarge. as for trigger times , anything can beat a timer even 1/4 sec . its mostly how you set a camera up to catch game. if your puting in a food/feed area 4 sec isn't going to be a problem. 1 sec still not a problem is shooting up/down a trail. 1/4 seci still set like its going to take a sec. distance from target is also a factor. the wgi cams i have can take a great picture if you can keep it 10-12 feet from where you expect the game to be. the cuddies i have can push that back to about 30' (yes i know the flash says 50 but that is under perfect conditions.. I have had great luck wit factory reconditioned cams(all the problems have already been fixed) i think this is because when they are rolling off assembly line they only check 1 of every ten but reconditioned everyone is looked at... i too have heard some people have problems with cuddies...thing is they have problems with any camera it seems.. and by the time they actuall read directions they have learned to care for their new camera and it works fine, be it what ever brand they just bought. I run 15 cams now with 10 being cuddies. if i didn't get others as gifts/ trying a bargain they would all be cuddies.
  9. Doc do you really think everyone will be shooting at a house? heck that happens now with gun.hundreds of home shot every year right? if the property is that crowded i doubt they would be hunting there. go in a woods 50 yards an arrow will most likely not go thru the brush/trees without deflection. I feel the amout of bad people that will abuse this will far be outnumber by those that will benifit. its time the "good guys" stop being restrained by the legislation meant to regulate the few.. if you don't believe this you can turn in your guns cause they might be used in a crime....
  10. Got them thru sportsman guide for $100 -$120 a piece.. can't say i remember the exact price i can look it up when i get back home..

For those of you that do not want it in archery why not close archery that weekend?, I know the state numbers for youth turkey hunt say only about 5000 or so participate across the state, not sure how many for youth pheasant, but i do not see huge numbers of kids being able or doing this maybe 10,000 across the state? not enough to ruin any ones bow hunting. As for the dates, if/ when the bow start is pushed back to oct 1 that gives 11 days for the die hard bow hunter before this hunt and 5 days after before the traditional start of bow oct 15 or there about.what ever the3rd sat .. you know.. i for one will use the extra time i'm given for bow and am willing to " give up" 3 days to our youth.
  12. Most of my pics i have posted have been from cuddiebacks. i have several captures (5) 4 of these were bought factory reconditioned, (2) attacks, and several older models. my oldest cuddiebacks are almost 10 years old. still working fine. i did have an issue with an expert model, sent it back and as they no longer made it i was offered an upgrade to their newest model for 75$. I have a few wild game innovations ir4 's great day time and crappy ir pics. i do have a steathcam and its ok but doesnt compare to cuddieback. Do not be afraid of factory reconditioned the price is half and quality is same or better as they were found to have problems and have been fixed. ease of use on the earlier models was ok but the new models are a lot better, not quite put batteries in and use but very close with capture model. I love white flash and will not buy the ir cams...Battery use is very reasonable about 2 weeks in freezing temps , a couple of months in warm weather. I did pick up an archers choice cam last fall and while thepics day and night were good the batterlife was less than desirable , though the video with sound i am impressed with and cant wait to put it in a few known strut zones this spring.
  13. recovery issues have never arisen behind my familys property. but i am looking at a larger picture. this would allow a lot more areas to be open to hunting and for those of you that do hunt in a residential area, i have so has my family, and friends. You wait for a good shot. deer do not go far on a good shot. rarely beyond 50 yards. Yes there are exceptions. But, i have a friend whose family farm became surrounded by development, the edges of his property are brush(old hedge rows) the deer are there and lots of them. A 2 lane state road borders one side and a 4 lane state road the other traffic is constant. A 3rd side has a church set way back off the road. there are about 3 trees that fall outside of the 500' existing rule in a hedge row in the middle of the property. these are used for hunting. Hundred s of deer have been passed up as they are silowetted by road, houses, buildings. we've hunted there with gun and bow. 166 yards is an aweful long way to be and forces us to shoot outward(to be legal)from the center of a circle. a reduction in distance for bow would let the shooters back be facing the e road/houses/church. resulting is safer shooting and most likely a larger harvest of game during the season resulting in less ddmp needing to be issued to curb the growing population of deer. This is one example ..and i am sure it is repeated again an again in some form across the state. i do not recommend hunting in a yard that is 65x150 but for those with larger lots and 1 amicable neighbor as joe has 150 x1800 x 2 would be a 12 acre piece to hunt even if having a house close on one side that wouldnot allow you to shoot now 50 yards away with your back to their house/structure you have a huntable and legal property. and more than likely you will take a good shot and the game will never leave that property.

I hope they do do it. there are a lot of small game hunters in the woods anyways, as for the reason behind it, i'd rather a kid get introoduced to a calm way to deer hunt than have to compete with hundreds of guys rowdy as all heck, half of em prolly have had to much to drink the night before. Will it bring more hunters into the sport i hope so, but a least it will give em a chance to see what it can be before, being thrown to the wolves. the days of the kids growing up shooting bb guns around the neighborhood is gone. A little perk won't hurt me. i've even had a few friends whose kids might be eligible for this hunt ask to be able to bring their kids here.. who know maybe they will shoot that big one i've been after that always seems to stay out of bow range, or maybe they will shoot a button, either way i will be more excited for them then they will be. The game doesn't belong to me, and i am happy when ever i see a kid telling their hunt stories. For me regular gun season has become the time to harvest meat, my trophy hunting is done during bow, and i for one am willing to share that with kids....and i hope they grow up and are willing to return the favor. Heck why not make it a youth/elderly season for all i care.....
  15. doesn't matter if they never do.... just fast cars turning right..... rather watch a street race....
  16. wow........just over some peoples head..............
  17. Doc, many towns/villages have their own no discharge of firearms..and by state defintion this includes bows, i cant tell you the number of people i see practicing in a village that has a no discharge of firearm law, shooting their bow illegal but ignored by local law enforcement . several caome to mind... lancaster, depew, west seneca, cheektowaga off the top of my head right around buffalo... if this was truly so dangerous wouldn't local pd stop them? there is no reason not to reduce this for bow it seems that the bow got lumped back in with firearms at the statelevel when the 500' rule was enacted, its time to remedy this error...
  18. joe , while i agree you should have other places to hunt, some of the best hunting is in surburbia, large estate type lots lend themselfs to overpopulation of game in a small area, instead of the tax payers having to pay "sharp shooters " or worse yet police officers on overtime.. to kull the deer population wouldn't it be better to allow legal hunting in those areas using bow? in order to do this without upsetting a lot of "upscale home owners if you will" the legal distance for bow needs to be reduced..166 yards is a long long way for bow, 100 yrds or 75 or some other number should be allowed. Fact is people are practiceing illegally in these neighborhoods with out realising they are illegal. this would allow someone to protect their shrubs even though their neighbor 300' away feeds the deer(illegal as well) and doesn't want to see bambi hurt. The law should be changed not for a single case of i want but for the betterment of the communities where this is a problem... it may not be a problem where you live but these problems do exist in a lot of communities...
  19. Oh and i live way out in the country and this law change will give me almost another 3 acres to hunt on my own property. let alone at my mothers ..the neighbors there all want the deer shot lucky they allow the discharge there or the entire property would be unhuntable...
  20. Again this is bow, i could be 50 yards away concield and shoot, i know about 50% of ever bow hunter is shoting a bow in their back yard. And i can safely say that over half of them have not asked all owners/ neighbors or the surrounding property for permission. the perception to most not hunters is a bow is a 20-30 yard weapon and is not a threat, i do not honestly believe that they(they non-hunting community) even know about a 500 foot rule to be allowed to shoot it . yes your immediate neighbor may not care but in a average development just practicing your bow giving an high average of 100' wide lots(most are 65') you need to have permission from 4 neighbors on one side minimum and 4 on the other, not to mention the houses across a 50' wide road ... or behind you.. you may shoot behind a privacy fence.. fact is you are probably illegal..... just like shooting before or after sunset, or not properly immeriatly filling out your tag.. 500' is to far for a bow 150' is much more appropriate as there is not large report to give away your location. you would never try to shoot your deer rifle between houses... but you do your bow..the real question is why?? if you shoot your bow at your home in a surburban setting you must agree with this proposal.... or you just like doing illegal activities..
  21. if on the tax property description it is concidered occupied/in use. even if seasonal. and for those of you who do not live in surburbia it probably doesnt matter to you but if you did and owned 2-3 acre lots and were over run with deer that had no hunting of the population possible becasue of set back/bad neighbors. you might want this changed to protect you own bushes/landscaping.
  22. I use to trap a lot but my job doesn't allow me the time to do it anymore
  23. four season i took the time to read you post and yes there is and will be a demand for this kind of hunting, the problem is in the way it is presented to the public by the media , resulting in the viewer beliving there is a big buck behind every tree. or how easy hunting is. this give the new hunter false hope and beliefs in what to expect. reallife every day person normal hunting is not like this.. they buy a bunch of advertized crap, go out see squat, and give up the sport or drive themselves/their spouse/family nuts trying to emulate their tv heros. it is not a healthy thing at all. where if the show actually showed the true footage/fences their reality wouldn't be so convoluted.
