Deer movement advice on a large clear cut
G-Man replied to left field's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Clover will grow, you can spray and kill off grass but rubiflora ( berrys) retain their leaves late and are a favored browse of deer to begin with. The clover would be a benefit in spring nutrition and attract Turkey as well. -

Generic gly will work 41% mixed to 2.5 % will kill brush and grasses/ broadleafs.. if you paint it full strength on fresh cut stumps it will kill roots and prevent suckering -

Hope you sprayed stumps or they will come back thicker.. I'd clear existing trails. And I'd kill last 2 you left.. -

So my friend removed security travel cover to put in food, not a total loss he can plant screening plant, shrubs and develop a area that they will feel secure in and perhaps feed.. but a simple assessment could of prevent t a few year set back to his ideal hunting spot

Have a friend who put in a plot behind his house and it looks awesome 2 ft tall already ,did the soil sample, added what was recommended . Problem is no deer are in it! They use to be in the goldenrod overgrown field all the time! Taking a fallow field and creating food may destroy what animals really need , cover for bedding ,nesting, bugging, fawning. Before you try and develop a property do an honest assessment of what the property has and what it lacks.. cameras can show you what areas are used and what time of year.. trails show travel through area ,beds , droppings , these should be located and should be present at all times of year. Deer vacate in winter? You may need thermal cover, disappear in summer? Perhaps a water source is needed , only passing thru during season, perhaps bedding cover ,or food.. an honest assessment is key to creating your own hunting paradise!

3 years or so dunstan will produce I planted some to hope they cross with my native American survivors. I get nuts from both and have a lot of volunteer trees growing I hope have resistance. Try some american filbert( hazelnut) if you want fast dependable producers. Sunny spots edge of fields .. spread easy and can be split and transplanted

Rye will germinate down to 37 degrees . . I'd plant radish and clover together and over seed rye later only.need it 3 or 4 in high by end of October ,let.come up next.spring. I like mine to go to seed as poults and hens seem to like it. Or you can mow and.clover will fill in

Cereal rye will grow on concrete If you keep it watered.. , rye, buckwheat, annual clover for a few years to help organic matter into soil. You really dont need a tiller with a disk. Your not planting anything that need to be over 1/2 inch deep.
