New plot clearing for neighbor
G-Man replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Will let go to seed and he wants to rotate in corn next year. Part of this field will also be put into turnip. Dogwood is used by deer as browse especially the berries ,but if more prefered foods are available they will stay on the bushes much longer, Turkey use the the same way here. I prefer aspen as a browse species here as it benefits rough grouse as well.( primary food are the buds in winter and catkins in spring) but that is another whole post....lol He just bought this last year ,during gun season and asked if I would help him maintain trails and add foodplots. This was a nice area hidden from road and behind creek. Lots of trails thru it and bedding by creek and on hill. Hasnt been planted in about 20 years, trying to keep away from other property lines and make it in center of property for him. Will be mowing this week I'm sure as grasses are nearly knee high already -
Spent the day popping out bushes on neighbors property, 1st stage in prepping for a july planting of buckwheat. Will spray to kill all the grasses wait a week or two. And then turn ground, wait 10 day to 2 weeks spray again and then plant.. intentionally left the apple and pear trees I could find in the mass of honeysuckle and dogwood.shrubbery.

To quote a friend who. Has worked under several administrations and meets with the president on occasion. " trump is not perfect he rides an edge but on whole has done more good than bad. He is not dumb as he knows exactly what he is doing and says many tweets just to push buttons of his rivals who then rush in and throw themselves on the sword he created and he looks better because of it. Anyone who thinks him dumb is simply falling into a well laid trap. Loyalty above all is what he wants from those he surrounds himself with."

Hard to beat an old ford for.durability and ease of use. A lot.of " food plot " equipment is just the right size for it. When I really.need to get done in a hurry my Oliver 1800 and a 16 in 5 bottom plow get brought out. This year got a good jump on things, but still waiting for corn seed to come in from nwtf, the qdma cancelled their soybean . Have 3 acres in corn stubble I'm trying to decide what to do with depending on seed, may turn later and put in winter rye with clover mix. Some brassica in part of it..
-
Got 2.5 acre of field corn in yesterday right before this rain. Still have acre of soybean to do. Perhaps later this week.

I just never had a long sit in me. Just pattern them and go out when they should be coming through, no reason to scent up the woods all day intake 2 or 3 weeks vacation to hunt, there is always tomorrow , season is so long..

Corn loves sod, sprayer with gly, a plow, disk, and a spreader for seed and fertilizer. Spray , plow , disk , wait spray , spread seed and light disk in , wait till corn has 4 leaves and hit with 45,0,0 fertilizer. If roundup ready corn can spray again when knee high to rid field of weeds.. if you have access to a 2 row planter with fertalize hopper it cuts down on disking and amount of fertalize used. 1 acre is wiped out by end of october, my goal is to improve herd health 1st ,not hunting. In spring of 94 I found 5 deer that were winter starved, so i started winter feeding was going thru 4 to 5 ton of corn a winter (after season to spring green up) then dec said no. Feeding so i started planting corn, 1 acre at 1st didnt do what i wanted, so i went to 2 , that made it to dec, then 5 ,and it last till feb march..most years. Since 5 is all in really want to plant i also plant 1 to 2 acre of brassica, between the two I can make food available till end of march. The average body weight per age class has increased by 15 to 20 lbs since I've been doing this . Yearling doe at over 100lbs, and yearlings bucks are 125 plus, ( these are from residential deer I have on cam year round we get travelers that are significantly smaller with smaller horns)

This was from a collapsed barn ,so it is possible , but most I've found from area is white pine and hemlock.

I've planted beans before ,need lots.of acres or a way to keep deer out of it till they mature if your hoping for late season.. I went back to corn. Last.longer is left.alone most.of growing season, and plamt enough so it is there after.season to help.them bulk up.for winter..

I always worry about platform bigger than box rotting from the elements..

Not for me,I dont hunt long enough or stay out long enough to use one. 1.5 to 3 hours at a time is all I'm good for.

This year I only carried my stool that hangs from a strap, and my call in jacket pocket. A small bag with shoulder strap that has calls extra gloves ,facemask, and couple of extra shells. Unlike most Turkey hunters I know i do not go out for a long period of time just a couple of hours here and there. I find no reason to chase birds around all morning educating them and pressuring them. It's a long season, the right day a bird volunteers to die...

Heck I've shot ,lots of dogs and cats for friends, I even shot my own horse. , right behind ear pull trigger slow and steady..

I dont see a collar an any of those dogs, you can have your dog run on your own property, train it or restrain it to stay there!! An escaped pet dragging a leash, broke chain, collar is a bit different than one running every day by itself. Have trail cam photo of a pit / rottweiler carrying a fawn ,with its red collar on.. no idea who's dog it was as none of my neighbors have one. I remember my father shooting a dog during deer season chasing a doe ,picking it up and dropping it off at owners house and telling them it was running deer. The man thanked him for bringing it home. My grand father killing a neighbor a few doors down dog that was in his chicken coop, told the guy come get his dog and bring 20 bucks for chickens it killed.. Its is your responsibility to control your dog period.

Friend took it 8 plus hours, timers on each part, she thought it was very good and informative., as far as I know no archery on line.

Tracks around? All porky's need is a hollow under a building or in a tree and they have a home , eat bark mostly. Any damage to trees near the top? Bare patches.. prolly a porky, if not I'll say coon making opening bigger to get through on its nightly excursions. Scratches to large for squirrels.

If it's a strip then walk way out in field in the dark very early. No flashlight or light of any kind.. And get around him.. unless you feel it will head to road and house..
-
They will get up deficate, stretch, strut and sometime gobble from limb , before it flies down it will wobble back and forth, crouch and drop from tree. Remember it will have better view from up in tree( think hunting out of stand for deer) . If you can get past it in the dark then your chance are better gettignbetwen it and any possible hens who normally roost withing 50 to 100 yards of the tom.
-
Second option is to flush him now and then head direction he went early tomorrow and set up he will be anxious to get back with his hens if there are any nearby. ,do not attempt if it will light across a valley , I've done this kicking hens out on purpose as well as gobbler away from its hens.. after a night of being alone they are much more responsive .

Go in pitch dark no light and get other side of him sit down and shut up. It will fly down and most likely walk by you. I mean pitch dark 430 .
