Possible relocation to NY

I currently live in North Plains, OR which is about 20 miles from Portland. The company I work for has a lot of positions open in the Malta, New York area. I have not applied for a transfer yet but before I will even consider telling my wife, I want to know what the hunting is like in New York state. I don't mind if I have to drive a ways. How many deer can a hunter harvest per year, and is it realistic to tag out on any given year.

I have never lived near the East Coast and my wife has never lived anywhere but Oregon. This seems like it would be a good opportunity even if its not going to be a pay increase.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hey ... saw your other post also . You should surf up NYS Dec for all the hunting Regs for New York State . Malta is close to the Adirondacks . Just south of Malta is Albany , the Capital District of NY . Every hunting license afford each hunter the opportunity to get one buck if he/she is so able . Then there is the Deer Tag system which is by lottery and is Wildlife Management Unit dependent . Its all on the DEC website ! The local paper is the Times Union ( www.timesunion.com ) And if your interested Malta still has an operating Drive In (Movies - Pizza Rolls) LOL !

Between doe permits and the differant seasons most guys can kill more deer than they can eat. NY has great wilderness, mountains, and alot of varying terrain, including swamps and agriculture. Turkey hunting here is a blast also. I have lived and hunted NY my whole life and love it. Also we have about a million acres of state land/forest preserve, so even if you dont own property your never too far from hunting land.

Good luck...my sister moved from NY to portland years ago....you have a beautiful state there...little more rain and a lot less snow than us...especially where your planning on moving to....if it's not a pay increase...WOW check with and accountant before making a move...seriously a shock...we are taxed on every thing ....We do not have the variety of game species you have out there...but lots of deer...

  • 4 weeks later...

depending on where you apply for your dmps and what license you buy, and how many "left over tags" are available you can get up to as many as 9 tags. as far as filling them all? it can be done, depending on where you hunt. the areas around the dacks are not issued that many tags. would need to be more in western ny to get that many tags and the chance to fill them :drinks: . good luck.

I used to live real close to malta 10 min now I am 20-30 min it is a great little community that is getting bigger quickly. From malta you can get into the adk is less than an hour and within a two hour drive you can hunt a ton of state land. plus be over to vermont where you can hunt moose if you pull a tag. If you have any specific questions about the area give me a PM and I will help you out.

I have a friend who moved from here to Wash. state, he comes back here to hunt....Ok Montana also.

But then I'm in western NY on a 3,000 acre farm where I have about 200 acres posted for my use only. I could kill a deer 50% of the time I hop into a bow stand.

Towards the ADK its a lot harder.

Taxes may be higher idk some out there are very high as well, but houses are dirt cheap .
