dave6x6
“America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” -Alexis de Tocqueville “The American Republic will endure, until politicians realize they can bribe the people with their own money.” -Alexis de Tocqueville I share the love of these quotes with one of history's greatest Americans. Ronald Reagan. Our 40th President used this quote after 8 years of restoring America to her rightful place of greatness, in his farewell address to the nation. Will we ever have a leader take us there again..?? Edited July 22, 2012 by dave6x6
nyantler
The America that our forefathers created was the greatest country in the world... what our government is turning it into is not. America is no better off now than when King George was in power... George Washington would be rolling over in his grave from what has happen to this country. The progressive movement will be Americas downfall by moving us back towards what we fought so hard to escape.
sits in trees
Want the truth, we are a bunch of believe anything our choosen cable news station tells us Dum Dums. If Fox news were to tell you that Canadians are all from Mars you would have a large percentage of the American population believing it.

Doc
So when did the mass-exodus of U.S. citizens begin? Last I knew, there were still huge numbers of people trying to get in here, but I don't really recall hearing a whole lot about the shrinking U.S. population as they leave this terrible country in decline. I must have missed all that. Yes, we have a whole lot of faults to point at that we are all very familiar with because we live here. One has to wonder what kinds of flaws we might encounter in some of these other "paradise" countries if we actually had to live there for a while. dave6x6
Doc, i agree with you completly. But if we don't know history, and more importantly our history, we will certainly fall from that greatness. The Roman Empire was at it's hieght for two centuries and then began it's fall and collapse in the third. We are almost half way through our third. It was said that "the days of democracy are numbered when the belly takes control of the head." People talk about the greatest good for the greatest number, but when you strip away free will and individual liberty, you stangle a system that was masterfully crafted by our founding fathers to do exactly that. Freedom is a fragile thing and Americas greatness has been fed from a fountain of Goodness, morality and righteousness. Alexis de Tocquevilles' quote still holds true almost 180yrs after he wrote it...

I'm not even saying that there aren't plenty of signs that things are changing. What I am saying is that when we discuss the greatest nation on the planet, we cannot ignore the evidence where people vote with their feet. As he told of his struggles under a socialistic system and the struggles of his family, to a group of Americans, he overheard them say to each other, "man, we don't understand how lucky we are." Hearing that, the cuban replied, how lucky you are? I was lucky that i had America to escape to. You have nowhere to go if America fails. This is truelly the last stand on earth. If Freedom fails and America fails, people will most cetainly ask for centeries to come. "What was it that Americans valued more then Freedom? Historians will undoubtably shake their heads and wonder Why? What the hell was wrong with them???

Nobody is running yet because most of America doesn't see what is coming and frankly won't start paying attention until it is too late... kind of like the GREAT herd of sheep heading for a cliff as they follow the foolish lead sheep... some will be smart enough to stop before falling off the cliff, but most will follow blindly over the edge... the few smart sheep could do little to stop the others that trusted their leaders. That doesn't mean that the flock can't be great again and hopefully the smart sheep will tell the new flock as it grows... the history of the old sheep so that they are not doomed to repeat it. I think nobody is running yet because there isn't anyplace to run to .... lol. Our biggest problem is that we are trying to change to be like every other country. We keep trying to convert other countries to Democracy, and all that is being accomplished is that they are moving us toward their socialism (and worse). It all relates to the globalization of America in which we are letting foriegn countries influence our values and theories of government. Let's hope those smart sheep can figure a way to get us back to a little bit of nationalism and forsake this damned copy-cat attitude that our leaders have come to embrace.

Elmo
It seems like whenever anyone criticize the US, they're immediately labeled as unpatriotic and a commie. All kidding aside, I think the US is the greatest country in the world and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else but it certainly isn't perfect. No country is perfect so therefore there is always room for improvement. There are certain things other countries do better than us. The first step in towards improving as a country is to recognize that there are flaws. That there are areas to which we can improve. I might not know all the answers (otherwise I would run for president) but it doesn't mean that we shouldn't recognize and verbalize some of these flaws.
