ants
Hear ya. Im not cry'n poverty but It just seems like when I buy something it comes out of "our money" when the wife buys something it comes out of "her money" I don't get it. I'd just rather avoid the wole head ache. As long as I get it in the house and into the gun safe before she sees it,,it's all good. If I get caught.... It was only $175.00 honey!!! ( out of "our money") LOL

ants
I just saw the Dick's ad in the paper this morning. Savage Axis with scope $349.00 and Mossberg trophey hunter, with scope for $319.00. Both have synthetic stocks and come in assorted cals. They seem like good deals to me. I'm sure the scopes are not that great, but thats something you can replace down the road. MountainHunter
Wish I could think of some thing that would be helpful. I would second the visit to Jesse's on route 32 in Saugerties. I respect the financial considerations. If you have someone you trust that is selling a decent used rifle I would go that route.
chiefbkt
I have 5 Savage rifles and love them all. Great guns for the price.
Dstone001
thanks for the thoughts everyone. If I do buy a rifle from an individual -- not a store -- should I take to a store first to have it checked out? I'm fairly new to all this. But I gotta say, after spending the last three seasons freezing in the woods and not seeing a deer anywhere near me, I'm doing all I can to get my first. (Ok, it wasn't that cold this past year.) Deerthug
I picked up a used Remington 710 30-06 bolt in 2008 from Campsite in Huntington Station with a Bushnell 3 x 9 x40 scope for $300 and I've been very happy with it. Not sure where you live but if you are near Campsite give them a try. I took my brother there last year when he was looking for a rifle and we were shown a "used" beautiful Winchester 30-06 with checkered wood stock - never fired with all the stickers still on it. They were asking $500 without a scope. He passed on it but I looked it up when got home and retail it went for $950. Went back few days later and it was sold. You might get lucky and find a decent used rifle there.
chiefbkt
Dstone001, what kind of price range are you looking at anyway? $300, $400, $500, $1000???
Top ramen
Best buy is a shotgun, Remington 870 with both barrels. One rifled slug and the other wing barrel. That is of course if you don't have one already. I like a remington 700. You will probably spend as much on ammo, sling, mounts, and a quality scope. Dstone001
Well, a friend says he will lend me his Ruger 308, with scope. He's taken six deer with it. Now I need to find a place to practice. Any public rifle ranges in Dutchess County? Thanks for all the advice.

loworange88
Mossberg 100. I have one in .308 and it prints sub-moa with a nikon scope and my nosler 165 grain handloads. That or you can get a very nice deal on used winchester 70s, remington 700s and savage 110s. All great bolt rifles. I have a Mossberg 100ATR in .270....not a super expensive rifle, but it will hold a tight group out at 100yd and well beyond. I put a Nikon scope on mine, and love it. sweet old bill
I concur with Dad 6424. SOme times people use more gun then needed. I use a 308 remington since about 1964. It takes deer and it lloks like hell from the hunting trips, the bluing is just about gone, the foearm has a splinter, the stock shows were I walked thru all kinds of junk . But what I find is with a good scope set on 3 power, nothing changes with the rifle, it hits were I want. Several times over the years I was thinking of getting a new single shot rifle in 243 for chuck and deer, but when it comes down to it, I just stick with old faithfull. I also have a remington 1100 for slugs, I used that a lot of years as well. It shows the same hard usage.
