NYbuck50
I dont normally post doe kills on here, but i was very impressed with my new bullets this season.. Ive been shooting Nosler ballistic tip 150gr 30-06 bullets for years with great results. This year, i bought a box of Barnes TTSX in 150gr as well. The picture shows the entry hole on a doe at 80 yards. Needless to say, she didnt go very far
tughillhunter
holy hell! is that a 760 i see there?
KenAxe-7
Those aren't bullets, those are ordinance!!
YFKI1983
Thats the entry hole? I shoot 150 grain federal nosler ballistic tips, also 30-06. All the deer ive killed I can barely see the entry hole before skinning the deer. That looks like you shot it with an RPG
Stretcher Guy
What does the exit wound look like?
Fletch
Seems it would ruin a lot of meat?
NYbuck50
Yea that's my 760.. wouldn't trade it for any gun in the world. Most accurate gun ive ever owned. There was no exit hole on this one. I shot quartering to me, and the bullet went through and hit the far shoulder and blew it to pieces. The whole front right leg was just held together by skin, but the bullet never came out.. Funny thing is, the deer didnt go down right away. it kept limping away over the little knoll i shot it on. I got up immediately and started towards it, hoping to finish her before she got too far in the rain, and found her dead 15 yards away. tughillhunter
i have a 760 gamemaster. i love it, but didnt use it this year. they are awesome rifles.
Pygmy
That amount of damage isn't typical for Barnes X type bullets. I have been using them exclusively in all my hunting rifles for a number of years now. Typically I get a small entry hole and about a two inch exit hole. They nearly always exit and kill as quickly as any bullets I have ever used, usually with less bloodshot meat and meat loss. I've shot a moose, several caribou, and probably two dozen whitetails with them.
Doewhacker
Might have hit a little something before hitting the deer perhaps causing it to expand before hitting the deer.
Culvercreek hunt club
I am not sure I would like that performance of the bullet. It almost looks likethe bullet exploded on impact with the shoulder. It certainly did the job but I like an exit hole. Even after contact with a bone such as the shoulder I like a bullet that deforms but ratains enough ton give off the majority of it's energy and exit. jim335
I have the 760 also, and my son has the 7600, both in 30-06. We love them, very accurate. I'm still scratching my head over that entry wound.

You think there is any possibliity that there could have been something like a twig near the deer that started the expansion before it even got to the deer? tughillhunter
i think doewhacker is on to something. that makes alot of sense.

I was thinking more in line with what Culver said. Something like blowback after bullet hitting the leg bone.
NYbuck50
Might have hit a little something before hitting the deer perhaps causing it to expand before hitting the deer. This is a very good point..The deer was in very thick small saplings at the shot.. definitely could have hit a sapling and fragged the bullet.. giving it the close range birdshot looking hole
Doewhacker
I had a simular occurance this year with near the same results, I recovered the bullet under the hide on mine. And I put a finisher in mine and that made a neat little hole. I used Wincester Bonded bullets in 150 grn from a .06.
Lawdwaz
This is a very good point..The deer was in very thick small saplings at the shot.. definitely could have hit a sapling and fragged the bullet.. giving it the close range birdshot looking hole The bullet did not fragment. Can't happen with a Barnes. Do some media testing and see if you can get one to "fragment" I've done a bit of it over the years and never could get one to blow up. Any posibility a Ballistic Tip got into your magazine? Edited December 10, 2012 by Lawdwaz

WNYBuckHunter
Somethings not right there. How hard was the deer quartering toward you? Maybe the bullet went it, and stayed very shallow and exited making it into one large gaping wound?
Culvercreek hunt club
It wouldn't die from a graze in 15 yards. ...odd.
WNYBuckHunter
If it got a major artery it would. I agree though, very odd.
