Cabin Fever
I'll be taking my daughter out. We went out shooting yesterday, did some scouting and checking trailcams, and had the neighbor tell us some promising info about sightings. He told us they've been gobbling behind his house and that we could go try there, if we wanted to. My daughter heard the scoop from the neighbor too, so that got her excited! She said she doesn't care how big of a gobbler she gets.... as long as it's bigger than the one her brother got (jake) a couple years ago! I plan on going out every morning at daylight this week to listen and figure out where we might have the best chance for next weekend. I have a few pop-up blind locations picked out already. Crossing my fingers!!

Sogaard
4/20 and 4/21 are the dates. I'll be taking my sons out Sunday morning, they turned 12 last summer so this will be their first Spring Turkey hunt. Looking forward to it and I hope at least one of them gets a bird. mike35mmnut
My son and I are going out. I had to work last year so my father-in-law took him and they did not get anything but played with three or four and had a great time. The weather is suppose to suck but we have been waiting all year.

Lawdwaz
One of the years I took my son we had HORRIBLE weather for the Youth Hunt. Rain, snow, fog & wind for both days. What a damned shame. The other year it was perfect enough that he missed 4 adults in two days................I won't bore you with the story again as I'm sure I've told it before and it was unreal. Dick Kirby NEVER had two days of excitement back to back like that! IIRC I had 14 or 15 adult gobblers inside of 40 yards and as close as 15 yards. I'm still shaking my head.............. All the best of luck to you guys taking out a Jr hunter this weekend. Hopefully the weather holds out, the gobblers talk and the aim is true. Tim...........If you come back on here with out pics, you can never borrow my scale again. <grin>
Cabin Fever
Don't know how many of you plan to use a pop up blind when you take the kids, but they are great! Sure helps extend how long the kids can tolerate being out there, if there is no action going on. The kids can still figet around a little, snack, stay dry, sitting on a swivel stool is a lot more comfortable, and they (/ we ) can even curl up on the ground and nap if need be! My daughter before she was old enough to hunt herself...
G-Man
I have never used a blind, nor have i ever taken a bird in a field, i usually get them 50 yards from the roost tree at 6:15 in the morning. My goal is always to be back in the house by 830 at the latest....i assume you set up the blind days ahead of time? I know when they cannon net turkeys they place a bale of straw to simulate the net box before they make the switch as turkeys do not like unfamilar things.. Shadd Rapp
I am taking my son out this weekend. Just scouted the land and saw 11 turkeys, 4 gobblers. I hope they stick around! Good luck to everyone.
Cabin Fever
i assume you set up the blind days ahead of time? Not necessary! As super smart and wary as turkeys are, it's like you're invisible sitting in a blind! Windows open, no brushing in, and you can set it up right in the middle of an open field the morning of a hunt! I found it hard to believe watching the guys doing this on the hunting shows, and decided to try it myself! Just have a decoy or so sitting 10-20 yards in front of the blind and the incoming turkeys pay no attention to the blind! Crazy, but true! We've had turkeys feed so close to the blind that you could see their shadow along the bottom of the blind and you could hear them pecking for seeds and bugs! Makes it very exciting, especially for the kids! I just use a cheapo Ameristep Doghouse blind too, nothing fancy or expensive required! It's not just for field use either, as I've used it in the woods. It just makes it more comfortable for the kids and that helps extend the hunt, when things are slow or dead.
