Five Seasons
Hmm, there is some very flat land in northern Wayne County.Thinking of Sodus,Williamson and Ontario. I am no rifle expert but I would be concerned about a ricochet or missed shot at a deer traveling across an open field . A slug would pose the same danger at close range but I would be concerned with a high power rifle bullet being able to travel a greater distance.Sounds scary to me. idk i live in northern ontario and there may be some flat land but it's pretty wooded and very populated. phade
If you are for xbow, you should be for rifle imo. Gotta stay consistent. Safety numbers have proven that rifles are no less/more dangerous than pumkin throwers. I'm not bothering to look them up as I am busy this week, but there's plenty of data to back that up, even in NY.
Cabin Fever
I think whenever there is a change, and people are taken out of their comfort zone, some people tend to get weak at the knees and think the worst, like the sky is falling. Kind of like having the youth deer hunt during the bow season. Many thought there would be so many hunting accidents and bowhunters were gonna be shot. Were there any hunting accidents?? Don't think so! Rifles may prove to make things safer, as there will be more 1 shot kills, instead of guys emptying their guns and just throwing lead, hoping one will connect. Doc
Rifles may prove to make things safer, as there will be more 1 shot kills, instead of guys emptying their guns and just throwing lead, hoping one will connect. JMO... Just to play devil's advocate a bit, I have to say that rifles will not make reckless hunters into safe hunters. I strongly suspect that those that engage in spray and pray techniques with shotguns, probably will shoot their rifles in the same way. Those that do not properly ID their targets with their shotguns probably won't begin doing so just because they are carrying a rifle. And those that take low percentage shots probably will continue to do so with rifles. What may happen that is positive, is that instead of being beat to death with every trigger squeeze, rifles may encourage hunters to practice with their weapons so that they are more likely to actually hit what they are aiming at. Perhaps a few flinches might be avoided too .... lol. There may also be other potential safety benefits with using rifles, but here's not a lot of them that are coming to mind at the moment. But I don't yet see a whole lot of guaranteed safety problems that are likely when picking up a rifle instead of a shotgun.
Cabin Fever
No Doc, but I hunted for many years in PA with a rifle and I can tell you that there was no need to track most of the deer, because the shock of the rifle just dropped them where they stood, so no need for follow up shots! JMO... 1. i think the fear is some moron will be hunting near a school and something dumb will happen. Wayne central is surrounded by fields and woods. I'm not on either side of this one and I agree with phade that numbers show there's not a lot of difference, but i'm thinking the areas with rifles have had them for a long time. Introducing a rifle into an area where they weren't could lead to incidents, or it might not. 2. there was one season in the books for the youth hunt. If i recall it rained all weekend. So lets give it a few more years before we close the books on how successful and/or detrimental the youth hunt was. Five Seasons
Belo going to run out and buy a rifle....hates Crossbows please explain to me how you deciphered that from my post I don't really hunt any spots where a rifle would be needed over my browning with rifled barrel, but I like the option and excuse to finally get a nice rifle. and how another object that goes boom changes anything? there are rifle counties allover the state. There are not "crossbow" counties. Very few pumpkins care much about the tradition of "shotgun deer hunting" the case is not the same for bowhunters... unless of course there is a NYShotgun hunters organization i'm not aware of. WNYBuckHunter
It was reported to rules today. Just needs to pass that and be voted on the floor and it will go to the Gov after that. Still plenty of time to go through this year.
