how do you know who the dominate buck is?

The one who hasn't shown up on your cam yet, lol.

Dominance is a tricky and misused term. You can have a dominant buck one day be the subordinate the next day on the same ground if a bigger/badder alpha buck shows up. It can literally change daily. That said there are plenty of bully bucks that can steer away loner bucks or subordinate bucks of greater antler stature. Those bucks in my opinion are more of a "cull case" than trying to shoot some deer in the name of genetics. I don't even think cull is the right term. I've seen some pretty wonky or wimpy rack bucks with bigger bodies and bad attitudes push around deer with impressive racks.

Outside of that I don't really care if a buck is dominant unless it plays into my hunting (ie approach/tactics).

Pygmy- You are probably the equivalent of dominant buck.

If you were a buck, I picture you like 7.5 years old, antlers declining, but with good mass and a roman nose or whatever they call it.

I'm like a 2.5 year old 120" 8 pointer. Lots of potential, but lots of growing up to do.

the only way i can tell a dominate buck is to see group interaction, other bucks will put their heads down and get out of its way. once in a while someone will challange him, it may have a smaller rack, even a smaller body, a lot of it has to do with agressiveness. lots of big bucks in the mid west are pushed off their home ranges by younger more agressive bucks. you cannot stockpile big bucks on a property unless its high fenced. once in a while you will see an article where a hunter tried for a buck for years only to have it killed a farm or two over by someone who had never seen it before. there is even speculation that some large racked bucks do not participate in rut activities at all so they are never dominant.

Thanks for the favorable analogy, Biz...

Actually, there are three stages in a man's life...

Stud.....Dud.......and THUD !

Unfortunately I am currently somewhere between DUD and THUD.....
