buddy had the same issue with his 835 and he tried a half dozen chokes and loads. The thing shot patterns like a donut. He was convinced it had such a high charge it was blowing the center of the pattern out. I don't know what caused it but I saw the patterns.

I'd try to find the slowest load and the most open reasonable choke in that situation. Thinking the high speed and the tighter chokes cause the shot to hit one another and spread the pattern out causing that donut you mentioned.

I agree with Pygmy, save for the Browning. It will last and you will not want to upgrade in the future.

I liked the Benelli Montefeltro, any of their shotguns seem ok to me fit and finish wise. Stoeger's lack in the finsh side IMO and build quality. (I own a 20g Stoeger o/u)

The Berreta A400 is a nice gun as well but the price is up there with the A5.

I tried fighting wanting an A5 but have since given up, its the one for me and some day I will own one.

You might want to look up a Browning Maxis too, my wife has one, hell of a auto loader and gas operated to boot. They retail around $1300 and you might be able to find one used for less. I highly doubt you will see an A5 used for a few years.

Yup I had a 835 and it was a good gun but I could never get it to pattern as well as my other guns.My friends 835 is the same way.My BIL's can punch a solid hole at 30 yards with some ammo and patterns good at over 50 easy.So I know its just the gun.I dont want to get a lemon though.I think I will keep the old trusty and get a new/used one and see what happens

puregold choke and hevi-13. amazing patterns. not cheap though. I put a red-dot reflex on top and i love it.

Thats what I shoot is Hevi-13,I had 4-5 different choke tubes for it and never got a good enough group to make it a 40 yard gun.My Charles Daily has 1/2 the group at 40 that my 835 did,but my BIL's 835 does as good as my Charles Daily.with my old tube and hevi shot.Just have to get a good one is all.

Why not get the Stoeger 3500 if you want a semi - you know they are good guns already from experience and reasonably priced. Might not be as nice as the A5, but less than 1/2 the price. I would have bought one if I didn't find the win sxp for a reasonable price.

How's that thing pattern?? You try it yet

Well I almost got scammed by the seller of the Benelli.I sent the payment on Wednesday and as soon as I told him the MO was on its way he asked me if I could send the payment in another way and he would just send the MO back as soon as he got it.So I called the post office and asked if I could redirect.I was told I could because I sent it priority, they redirected it back to me and as soon as the tracking # said it was heading back to me he called and asked what was going on.I told him "you wanted the money in a different way and if you think I am throwing another payment your way without the shotgun your nuts".So he told me he would tell his FFL to ship the gun to me and send the money. He text me this am and said the gun is on the way and to please send me him the money.I asked for a tracker and he gave some BS excuse so I asked for a phone number to his FFL so I could ask him.He gave me the # and when I called I got the same dumbass guy on the phone that was trying to sell me the gun!!!!So because I have the money coming back all I am out is the 20 bucks it cost to send the MO down to him. Then a little while ago just on a hunch I got back on Armslist and guess what. The same add, same gun, same price and the same picture is up again, but not in Georgia like the first time,Its in West Virginia now!!!If the gun happens to show up on Thursday(I will be amazed) I will send hi the cash anyway he wants. Here is the add for gun. Here is the listing on Armslist.I also contacted them and told them what was going on and I think he is a scammer.I hope I am wrong but I doubt I am.

I have never felt the need to take the punishment of 3.5" loads

3 inch loads in a gas auto are plenty, they kill turkeys at 40-45 yards, and that's as far as I feel the need to shoot.

Well said, I agree Danno!!!

You said you couldn't get your 835 to pattern? Was it a turkey model? Ported and jugged barrel? Or a regular 835 3.5in ? I have both and turkey loads pattern like crap out of the normal one..its made for duck and goose (lower velocity loads) they pattern great. The turkey model is almost to tight 50 yards with just copper plated ammo is normal.I would like to see how the new ex range shells work but can't find any.. how much can you really extend past 50...pellet weight and speed drop that I don't think at 60 or 70 would penetrate to kill a bird.

I shoot an 835 with a pure gold and trying the Winchester longbeards 3.5 #5 shot this year.

Was on another forum and they had a link to shot drop and wind drift (in a 10 mph cross wind)  from 30 out to I think 70 yards. This came up in a post about the Long beard ammo and its supposed long range and patterns

At 60 yards in a 10 mph cross wind there was about a foot of wind drift and about 4 or 5 inches of drop.  Even with a good pattern you would have to use some Kentucky  Windage to get it done at that range.

However, based on what most guys were saying (over there) the Long beards maintain a good pattern and guys were getting 200+ pellets in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards.  That was more impressive than the distance.

I'm going give it a go but for $25 per box of ten I not going to burn through a lot patterning them.
