moog5050
Was forward a text from a friend of a photo of a black bear from his property in Wayne Co. yesterday. Definitely a reliable source. The hunter never shot at him, but the photo was taken while he was in the stand. Pretty cool. I know there was a small one in Rochester this past summer, but what a surprise it was for the hunter who took the photo. I know I would be shocked if I saw one on the lands I hunt around here. He estimated 200lbs. I have no idea but it wasn't a cub. Not going to post the photo unless my buddy says its OK. Just thought some of you Wayne Co. guys might find it interesting. Be ready, you never know.
Cabin Fever
Interesting! A neighbor just sent me a pic of what he believes to be bear claw marks on a tree. I would love to see a bear in the area! Have no intentions of shooting one, unless it was pretty huge.

You never know Cabin. Its out your way.
philoshop
They're definitely moving north, though I haven't seen any sign yet in my yard. Southern edge of Ontario co. Why would they forage around a forest all day every day when they can just raid a few garbage cans in the suburbs somewhere and take the rest of the day off? They're adaptable critters, and pretty smart. I hunt the middle of Wayne Co during gun season (near the Zurich bog), so I'll keep an eye out for sign this year. No open season around here though. nyslowhand
Maybe 3-4 years ago there were cam photos & spottings of a small bear in town of Sodus. Just off the backside of my property. Guessing it was same one that got hit by a car closer to Wolcott. Makes you wonder when walking in/out of the woods in the dark & seeing the reflection of eyes... Bettter check 2014 bear season & newly opened areas. Most of NY has a season!
philoshop
They're really just giant racoons. LOL Scary actually. You're right on the open season! Same as deer season. Never even thought to check. Then again, when I grew up in that area we didn't have turkeys either.
nyslowhand
Damned bear sightings are so rare in our neck of the woods (N 8F), not even sure I'd shoot one. Maybe in self-defense..! lol. Still waiting for another "moose on the loose" alert like ~12yrs ago. Made it all the way to Williamson.

Mustang51js
It's funny reading this because in north jersey where I live we have so many bears there's at least one or two calls a day for bears in someone's yard. Maybe ny should set a limit on amount of bears taken to let the population grow a little more
nyslowhand
We're discussing a region along the southern shore of Lake Ontario. Pretty sure (??) there are decent bear populations in other areas of NY. They just haven't migrated north out of the southern tier or westerly from the ADKs to be common where we're talking about this rare sighting. Not yet..! Everyday I go into work I hear new stories about it. Depending on who you talk to, it's anywhere between 150 and 1,000 pounds! Lol

We get them on the farms I hunt every year. Sign is there, and the farm hands have seen them, but no cam photos yet. Honeoye area

Yeah but what happened that there are no bears in central ny. They had to be there at one point. It's hard to believe they were all hunted out. If they set a kill limit of say 400 tags a year over time they will be all over the state. In nj they don't open the hunt till December so most of bears are hibernating then. Some people complain about that but at same time it leaves bears for the future, we average about 250 bears killed each year.

I think a lot of the areas they are moving into now are because the small farmers in those areas are folding up or already have. The areas of the state that have traditionally held the populations were made up of large undeveloped areas with more mature forests.
