my son in-law works for the state and he got us in to the show with his state ID pass no hassles

the show was excellent we all enjoyed seeing the plans flying from 200 mph to 1,000 mph

and my grand son liked watching the paratroopers floating down

I was working at one of the airbases in Rochester this past Thursday repairing their 50' flag pole the blue angles were there and stated doing some practice runs i was up in a 60' lift one of the times they came in really quiet then did something to get super loud when they got right over my head it was sweet i felt like i was getting a free show from up in the lift

I've never been to an air show, but that looks pretty freakin' cool!

Sweet pics!

Neither have I officially...........one time we ended up on Niagara Falls Blvd near the airshow up there by mistake.  Those planes were cool!

I'd like to do one someday.  The Geneseo show looks very cool but for some reason we can never make it happen........ :(

The reason they were "quiet" coming in, is because they are going close to the speed of sound, so they are basically almost outruning the sound of their engines.

BTW, no aircraft at an airshow is going 1000 mph. The speed of sound at sea level is @ 750mph iirc, and they cannot break that at an airshow, they stay just under it on their high speed runs.

Heres a video from last Friday of the demo F18 practicing, he was just under the speed of sound. BTW, there is no lag between the video and sound.

Heres one of the Blue Angels solos doing the same type of pass..

I work around Republic Airport and get to watch the planes as they come and go to the Airshow at Jones Beach......good stuff for sure. The coolest thing to see is the Blue Angels "Fat Albert" jet assisted C-130, I don't think it plays a part in the shows, but more or less brings their gear to the shows, but I may be wrong. Either way, very impressive to watch it take off.

They open their show with a Fat Albert demo. Its pretty awesome. I believe the current pilot of Fat Albert is the first ever female.

They won't break the sound barrier on land due to sonic booms - if not operationally necessary. If you've ever heard one, it'll scare the crap out of you. You will not forget that sound. You feel it almost as much as you hear it.

Growing up in an area where the largest military presence in the world was, and having a father in the Navy who led a squadron's ops group (VA-42, now closed), I learned a fair amount about military planes of the time. A few times a year a plane would break loose just offshore or overhead for various reasons, but it was not normal practice due to the structural damage the booms can cause and the often cited but difficult to prove damage to wildlife and vegetation, and even humans.

I distinctly remember one boom that made the news (they don't always) because it happened over land (much more rare then when they do over the water in that area) and it was directly overhead the main drag of the commercial area - windows were blown out of a ton of buildings. I remember a new bank had a lobby that was mostly glass walls and ceiling and it took a beating.

Because many of the operational units break the barrier over water, there's a bit more info to go on, but the booms do appear to have an adverse impact on marine mammals such as sea lions and even dolphins and whales, similar to use of navigational/SONAR. Many farmers in that area believe it damages crops and can reduce productivity in animals, although not much has been done to really prove it.

I am just repeating what the announcer said I know nothing about planes
