jjb4900
My daughter's Forester have NEVER gone into a quick Lube place and not had a leak on either the drain plug or the filter. Even after I tell them to pay attention to it, it leaks. not to mention they're absolute slobs.....my Dodge has a filter that is in the most ridiculous spot, they just pull it off and get oil everywhere that drips for a few days after........I only go when I'm pressed for time, maybe 2 times a year.
jjb4900
this thread inspired me to change my oil........6 quarts of Pennzoil 5w-30 and a Fram Extra Guard oil Filter, $30.66 from Advance Auto Parts.
jjb4900
I don't think the local Mom and Pop Auto repair shop do oil changes to make a ton of money, it's just something they do to keep their loyal customers happy...kinda like to gun shop that sells licenses, they make peanuts off of those sales but hope you coming to the store for that will create other sales..........much like the coleslaw and pickle that every diner puts on the plate, 90% of the people don't eat it and it probably costs the diner a few bucks in the long run, but if it makes a few happy and gets return business it was well worth the minor loss. I am going to use a dirty word here but I haven't been able to beat the pricing on a filter and oil for my 3 vehicles. (Walmart)

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Awesome cars, but I guarantee that the price of those "free" oil changes are hidden somewhere in the price of the car….Nothing is free
Paula
My husband always took his to I think quick lube (?) Then he started taking mine. He had me go once and I could not believe the price. I told him to pay me and I will do. We now do our own.

shawnhu
Last time I got my oil changed at a chain was when I was in college. Ended up almost losing my engine due to the knucklehead not tightening my drain plug. Left me stranded on the highway had I not had tools and a spare quart in the trunk. Sometimes it's not about how cheap/expensive it costs at the shop. Caveman
You can buy a decent floor jack and jack stands at Harbor Freight for about $150. Pays for itself in 9000-15000 miles at that rate. I also used to make it a point to tell them no to an air filter before they even got under the car. More than once I've intervened to stop them from taking advantage of an old lady in the waiting room who believed them that her air filter was dirty and agreed to pay $42 for a new one. Fletch
I got to admit I use Valvoline Instant. To me making an appointment, waiting at a shop to get it $20 cheaper is a loss to me, my time is worth more than that. Same with doing it myself. The $30-$35 bucks I save doing it myself well I need to run get the oil, do it and run to get rid of old oil..just not worth my time And costs $10 in gas running! I will say I do keep an eye on them. One place seems poorly run so I avoid it. The other one near me has had a couple of the techs, one guy and one girl there for years and I trust them, if a newb comes over I ask for the experienced guy/girl. I also tell them no to all the extras. I have a guy on the side who does all my regular work for fair prices and his reduced cost on parts. chas0218
It costs me $35 to do my wife's GMC terrian with full synthetic Dexos approved oil (Mobil 1). So $45 for me to sit 15 minutes and have someone else climb under and do it, isn't all bad.

I can do two full synthetic changes for that. I know that you're paying for the convenience of having someone else change your oil, but to me its just not worth paying double. I hate paying anyone for stuff that I can do on my own, whether it's a $10 or $50 dollar savings, and it's not even the $ I worry about, it's about having it done correctly.....but I can't see the complaint about paying someone charging $20.00 to do the work you if that's the route some take
