Sighting in .270 advice

Going to try and sight in my savage .270.  I've heard of going with the 3" high at 100yds to get maximum point blank range.  Can anyone attest to this or do you prefer to zero in on a specific distance?  Seems like MPBR makes the most sense.

Idk why but I like 2 in at 100. Works from 0 to 200 my furthest backdoor range. No guess just hold on spot and dead deer 0 to 200...

I have always sighted MPBR also...I don't get too scientific about it, however... Most modern high intensity cartridges with a muzzle velocity of from 2600 fps to 3000 fos, if you sight on from 2" to 4" high at 100 you are good holding mid-ribcage out to 300, or farther with the higher velocity numbers..

I was once told by a self proclaimed gun expert at a gun shop that " you sight in a 270 dead on at 25yds and it shoots so fast you will be dead on out past 300yds" me personally I like 1-2" high at 100yds. Like Pygmy said I don't get overly scientific with it.

A 270 sighted 2" high at 100, should b dead on at 200 and probably 6.5" low at 300. This is based off my 308.

YFK.....No.....A 30-06 sighted dead on at 50 would be perhaps 1/2" high or low at 100, depending on your s sights or scope mounting.

 

Buckmaster...Many years ago, in a galaxy far away, a  guy named Jack O'Connor wrote an article for Outdoor Life magazine

entitled  " Sight in at 25 Yards"....

The point of the article was that  most  commonly used scoped  rifles in the .243- 270- 308- 30-06 7mm mag range, with a scope mounted appx. 1 .5 inches over the bore,   if sighted in dead on at 25 yards, would shoot  2-3 inches high at 100, a couple inches high at 200 and pretty much dead on at 250, and a few inches low at 300...  So you could sight in dead at 25 and be PBR out to near 300 yards....I have tried it and it holds pretty true...However, one should of course shoot groups to confirm that, because it can vary due to scope height and other factors.      At the ranges most of us shoot at game animals, it ain't exactly rocket science..

In the Marines we sighted our m16's in at 36 yards, that made them dead on at 300. That was thru a peep sight.

I have mine sited perfect at 100 yds..I have never needed to shoot farther

I sight mine in dead on at 100 yards. I wont be shooting further than that.

If you never shoot over 100 yards it makes good sense to sight in at 100....

Where I hunt   a  200 to 300 yard shot is  a definite possibility, so why  waste the inherant trajectory potential by sighting in at 100 ..?..

Yep from my "shootin shack" to the back of my field is 332 yards. Gotta be prepared for that.

I rarely shoot more than 150 yards. I make sure all my rifles are 1-2" high at 100 yards. I know I can hold dead on out to 200-and I won't shoot any further.

A half inch high at 50 yards will put you dead on at 200 yards, and 7 inches low at 300 yards, 14 inches low at 350 yards. At 100 yards you will be 1.5 inches high, this is assuming you are using a 130 bullet with a muzzle velocity of 3060 feet per second...hope this helps.

Use the nikon spot on app/website to get an idea. You don't need a nikon scope to get an idea. If you zero at 100 yards with a 130gr. bullet going from 3000-3500 fps below is a ballpark for the amount of drop. 200 yard zero will have you just putting the crosshairs on biler room and pulling the trigger.

Here is 100 yard zero:

•   0   yards +1"
• 100 yards +0
• 200 yards -2.29"
• 300 yards -8.40"
• 400 yards -18.96"

Here is the 200 yard zero:

•   0   yards +2.00"
• 100 yards +1.13"
• 200 yards +0.00"
• 300 yards -4.89"
• 400 yards -14.10"
