Tick On My Pooch......

I think I'm gonna heave.

I killed a doe on November 11.......I didn't butcher it at home though.  I did bring home the bones and head for disposal in my garbage tote, the hide was left at a friends house as he sells them.

About 8-9 days ago we noticed something on our labs forehead.  We (I did)  thought it was just a growth of some sort that an old dog might get.  It grew pretty quick though and I was then thinking it was a skin tag as I have a few on me too.  

With hunting season here and work crazy busy it was put on the back burner, until a few minutes ago.  The dog was rolling on the carpet like she does often then my wife yells at me "hey, did you cut that thing off the doge head?"  I said no and of course she didn't believe me..........

The dog comes running out because she's yelling and I'll be dipped, it's gone!!

We looked around on the carpet where she was rolling and I found it!  My wife grabbed it with a tissue and put it in a pill bottle but first looked it over closely.  Damned if she didn't see legs and they weren't the ZZTop type. 

I Googled it and this is just what I saw..........

We rubbed the spot with rubbing alcohol and I had a shot of Crown to celebrate the money I saved.

I found one like that on my dog once. I was petting her when I found a strange bump that wasn't there just the other day. I started seperating hairs to find it and it was a tick that looked like that exact picture! Yuck! Called the vet and they weren't concerned so neither was I.

I got two ticks in my back a few years ago and had to go to Urgent care to have them removed, I was told that if you generally get the ticks removed in the  first 48 hours or before they become encouraged your chances of contracting Lyme disease are slim, however the doctor explained the reason for this is because when ticks are engorged they actually vomit back into the host and this is usually the time it's transmitted ,, I'm no expert but that's what I was told, so unfortunately your faithful friend may at risk....

I don't know much about ticks to be honest never had to much problem with them where I hunt usually but my son had 1 on him a few weeks ago, am I right with the snow on the ground you don't have to worry about them as much?

this is the first your dog has ever had? i remove numerous ticks off my dogs each and every year and have my entire life with owning dogs. they all have always had the frontline drops (which i stopped using after research into how toxic it is) and collars. They still get them. they have also got Lyme vaccine.  I also typically end up with a few being embedded in me too and find numerous walking on me each year. I really dont get all the panic and going to urgent care  or a vet over it? I know the evils of Lyme and other tick born pathogens.  I take preventative measures but really not much you can do beside never going outside again. Also dogs are typically not as susceptible to to Lyme effects, however this is not true of all breeds and some actually can get really bad (i believe labs are one who really susceptible to kidney issues with lymes).

i disagree. as you see in my other post i have lots of experience with ticks and they are nearly non-existent in the winter.  never had one on me or the dogs after snow. however in the fall i have had them reappear after a week of freezing temps and then a warm up.

For me yes that was my dogs first one ever and she hunts pheasants with me so shes not just a dog that stays home all the time. We really don't seem to have many where I live and hunt. I can only remember one other time having one crawl on me while hunting and a friend picked one up while golfing once. With never really experiencing them before a made a quick phone call to the vet once they open just to see what they said and like I said they weren't concerned as it happens all the time.

I'm surprised you didn't fully notice it.  A fully engorged tick sticks out like third nipple.

I wear my pants tucked into my socks 24/7/365 days a year on the property...but I came home from my last blind sit(doghouse in the grapes) and took off all outer wear on porch ...it was during that freezing rain before the storm....I was at the computer for an hour when I feel something scurrying across the area between my thumb and index finger...Well I immediately snatched it up pinching hard...When it tried to recover I had slid it across desk top grabbed the pen and crushed it..yep a tick..and I have to say bigger than  I expected. I swear I've been itching and feeling crawlies ever since...that's 2x's in the last month and I've never had problems before...and never had engorged ticks on the deer like this years buck ...It's just nasty!

I check my dog every day. She has tested positive for lyme and has taken the treatments and preventive measures. I pulled two off my son in the past week, neither engorged. They need to be in you 36 hours or more from what the doc says. We check ourselves every time we come inside. Hate those frigginthings!

I check my dogs often, it's hard because those little nugget are so SMall. Otis is young and hyper so it's hard to check him. My Dr. Gave me a script to get a blood test when I ever I feel the need and will give me another anytime.

Wow are you all ever  lucky. Every time I let my lab out when I am at deer camp I check her for ticks. And I am trying to remember checking her without pulling off a tick. I don't recall a time. Usually at least one. I also check myself and my wife and my hunting buddy to a lesser extent.  I don't really enjoy checking him.  Usually through the day I pull 3-4 off my body, just crawling along. Sunday morning I woke up with one on my left shoulder. Just had started to dig in a few hours before. Figured I missed one from the dog and it found its way to me.

Every time I look at my lab I am very very happy she is a white lab. If she was chocolate or black no way I would see the ticks. They stick out like crazy on her.

Edit: We have a once every three month pill we give the dog and it supposed to kill ticks after 12 hours of contact. I have not found once stuck to her yet since we started giving her this.
