growalot
If your putting in New Windows what brand would you choose. We are replacing our 8' + picture window, putting in two double hung s of the same size. Just curious.
grampy
For replacement windows, we've always used Andersen. Never been sorry with the choice.
Dinsdale
Marvin. Intergrity Series. Wood/Ultrex if you need stain, or want a traditional paint look for interior. Or you can do all Ultrex in and out, (almost always do wood, can order pre-primed) Maybe done excess of 250 in last 3 years alone; just did 30 the other day. Occasionally install Andersen 400 series, once every couple years, mostly to match existing. Vinyl exterior/wood interior.
Whelen
Just got back from the Depot, bought 7 Andersen windows after looking at everything out there. Andersen 400 series seem to be the best bang for the buck.
Steve D
Andersons in my entire house. They have a good warranty but only cover the window or door if something goes bad. The labor to replace is on you.
Lawdwaz
I'll be the odd man out and say Pella but I work for a "Pella Platinum Certified Contractor". We do you installations with Marvin and Anderson but locally we get the best service from Pella. Are you doing a vinyl, fiberglass or wood window growie? New construction or pocket install? Here's one from January....(pics aren't in order) We did almost the entire house on this job. Edited March 19, 2017 by Lawdwaz

Lawdwaz
Another thing........2 double hungs to fill 96" +/- are going to very wide, a picture and two DH flankers instead? Edit to add: smaller DH windows might scare the deer less if'n you're looking to cork one from the living room. Just a thought.... Dinsdale
All messing around with job pics aside..... I think Pella,Andersen,Marvin all make a decent product if you like the features and the cost fits in with budget. I would avoid any lumber yard deals with off brands....JMO. I worry more about the installer than manufacturer. LOTS of butchers who can't hang a door true or even put a window in a hole proper. Hell, I work with them many days!
goosifer
Grow, there are things that are more important than the brand. Foremost, who is installing the windows? The most expensive window will still be a disaster if it is not installed correctly. Conversely, even the most basic replacement window, if installed correctly, will do an adequate job from an insulation/heat loss/function perspective. If you are doing it yourself, make sure you know what you are doing and do it right. If the company is installing them, be aware that Pella, Marvin, et al are many times sold by authorized resellers/franchisees. Make sure you understand who exactly is responsible for the labor part of the warranty. I have read horror stories about the manufacturer and the franchisee pointing the finger at each other for a window installation gone bad. That aside, look at the specifications (U-factor, et al), warranty, and terms and conditions of the warranty. Then get the best you can for your budget. For my house, I have purchased custom wood framed Marvin windows from Big L Windows and Doors in Buffalo and had Big L install them. For my rentals, I have self installed vinyl replacement windows I ordered from Grossman's Bargain Outlet. I seem to recall a company in the finger lakes area (north of Ithaca) that manufactured and installed there own vinyl replacement windows, if that is of interest. Good luck! growalot
Thanks guys..Mr B is a construction super....started out as a carpenter and has done all our window installs. It's been a few years for residential so he wanted me to get opinions on what's been going on from some of you guys...I mentioned I surmised at least some of you were in the field...Great info and pictures to boot..More opinions the better and thanks for these and any more to come. It will be side by side double hung to fit the opening..He wanted different size but it's a stained tongue and groove paneled wall. I do not want to deal with what a size change would entail. They will be wood inside.
philoshop
One of the things I've noticed lately with door and window manufacturers and sellers is the upgrade in warranties. It's a very competitive business and the big names are willing to stand behind their products. Installers on the other hand are generally hit or miss.
