Zem18
I brought home a small goodie bag from a yard sale and it had some drill bits and router bits inside. Can never have too many of either. It also had these 2 "thingies" or "doohickeys" and I am clueless as to what they are or used for. Trying to search on the ol interweb but again don't know what I'm searching for or what it's called. It's driving me crazy not knowing so..... Let's hear it Sent from my XT1635-01 using Tapatalk

growalot
What?...isn't that "shaft" designed JUST like a wooden handle receptor?it's an open tube isn't it?
growalot
Hmmmm with out response...two different sized dibblers....
reeltime
yup countersink bits. grow, the shaft is probably solid and either round shank or octagon shank to fit in the drill or brace chuck. they are old school as today's pilot and countersink or countersink bits give a much smoother and cleaner cut.
growalot
Only Zem could say if they are actually solid. I blew the picture up an they look hollow, that's why I said dibblers. Perhaps he'll clear up what the shaft looks like
Zem18
Grow called it correctly, they are hollow.Sent from my XT1635-01 using Tapatalk

Doc
They work well and are an ingenious bit of engineering. Cheap (sheet metal) and effective. Of course today they have been replaced with all kinds of expensive machined parts that do exactly the same thing.
philoshop
Also known as step drills. Pilot hole, screw shank clearance hole, and countersink all in one. The shank is hollow because it's just rolled sheet metal, as Doc pointed out.
growalot
Smoken, thanks for the visual..Seeing actual size puts it right in perspective for me. Doc your explanation taught me something new,I have never seen a drill bit that had a hollow shaft. There are so many different shape and sizes on counter sinks...That I've never seen. Daveboone
it looks like the hollow portion is off set.....if so, wouldn't drill for diddly. I was thinking a tree sap tap if it is offset....
growalot
That was the other thing that made me think not bits, but obviously they are.

It is dimpled from setting the "tube" back from the original bend to get it centered.
Culvercreek hunt club
Lots of pictures on the web of them. Look under "wood screw drills" instead of countersink.
philoshop
They're pretty 'rough' for anything like fine furniture but I've been using them for years where appropriate, like installing kitchen cabinets. They're a lot handier than having three different drills, or spending/wasting time changing bits three different times for every hole. One drill for the holes, and one drill/driver for the screws.
