My guess is the dog passed someone practicing, at elevation, and presented a new target opportunity.

There is a slim outside chance it was a stray arrow from a practice session....very slim.

I often worry my cats are hiding in the brush behind my target

True but when people use guns to shoot people gun owners and hunters suffer same goes for this kind of crap ...hunters will be blamed...

isnt it legal to shoot a dog if it harassing game? Not that in way i support the idea. I'm a HUGE dog lover and would be pissed if my hunt was ruined by a dog chasing deer but could never conceive of doing this. And if i was the owner the person better hope i dont find them. good points brought up here already with tht eangle of shot and feild point use. bet this was a dog hating neighbor tired of the dealing with the "malfunctioning" invisible fence.

5. No action for damages shall lie against any authorized person for the killing of a cat, dog or coyote as provided in this section.

Just speculating but:

someone is practicing and neighbors dog who isn't well behaved comes into practice range.  

Shooter intends to scare dog off by shooting at ground in front of him and it ricochets up and into dog.  

Wrong no matter what but hoping someone wasn't so cruel to shoot the dog intentionally.

Seriously justify what...CLEARLY a field point,up hill angle...I'm thinking a budding serial kill who's parents are in denial...because kids aren't responsible for their actions these days. They got him a bow and arrows to keep his hands busy. :rolleyes: But hey blame a hunter.... that's what makes you feel all warm and fuzzy...but if you live in the area....watch your back...he'll tire of dogs eventually....:wink:

Not sure about Ohio but NY it is not legal to shoot a dog. You can shoot a cat if it is pursuing/harassing/killing protected song birds (a.k.a. all non-game birds.)

BTW doesn't all the invisible fence manufactures state, I'd assume many many times  in their paper work, that it isn't infallible. That you still need to be a responsible dog owner...Didn't he say they were at work? Doesn't the fur under the collar need trimming often for a connection so diligent is required?... No blame here just questions.
