BigVal
Ok guys I currently have a 24 valve in my 99 2500. Runs like a beast and I love the truck. Tranny was done two years ago but is letting go again. I have a decision to make I either throw a stock rebuild in it and sell it or I keep it do a full blown (the right way) rebuild so I can keep power in it and not worry about it. If I get rid of it I want a newer truck so that rules out a diesel for me. I can't afford it right now. I tow alot like 5 days a week and am looking for some input. WNYBuckHunter
The 6.4s are great engines. Im trying to get my hands on an inexpensive Apache version (SRT) for when my 5.7 gives out or I just decide to do the swap, whichever comes first. The only real issue with them is they dont get good mileage at all. How much are you towing normally? The 5.7 doesnt have much less in the HP and Torque departments than the Eagle (HD) 6.4 and tend to do a bit better in the mileage department. What kind of shape is your 99 in? Is it a singlecab? I might be interested in taking it off your hands if you sell it.
BigVal
Thanks for the info wny my daily towing is about 8-10k with occasionally towing heavier loads. I'm sure a 5.7 could handle it I'm just looking at options. And milage would suck to change because I get about 19 all around with mine now. It's actually a very very clean truck it's a extended cab long bed 4x4 with some goodies. Edited October 26, 2017 by BigVal
Gencountyzeek
Id say it comes down to the rest of the truck. If u put a couple grand building up the tranny but the body is rotting out doesnt sound worth it to me. I hate working on my vehicles, so i buy new or as close to new as possible. Like was stated already, 6.4 seems to be a good motor, just thirsty. I thought about getting a power wagon with the 6.4 but getting 13mpg around town scared me away. Buckmaster7600
Cousin lives next door we both have long bed reg cabs 4x4, he has a 16 2500 with 6.4 I have 2017 F250 with 6.2. He hates his, mine consistently gets better mileage and he and I think mine tows better, I like his interior better but overall he and I both like my ford better.I had a 15 2500 gm with 6.0 before this one and like the dodge and ford better.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Jeremy K
Heres a video of one of my good friends pulling with his 24 valve . He ordered it with a manual ,it was during the time when the automatics were breaking off the engine . He has a 4 inch exhaust and bullydog programmer on it .

Adkhunter1590
Great vid, I wish mine was a manual Could always swap one in I mean ya might as well if the auto is on it's way out again. If your not looking to sacrifice a good amount from the 19mpg your getting now, any brand gas 3/4 ton is going to disappoint you. The Ford 6.2 will get the highest mpg of the bunch but it's still most likely never going to see 19mpg. The weights your towing on such a regular basis defiantly require a HD truck, so I'd say stick with your current truck and just fix her up. When your financial situation changes down the road you can trade up for a newer HD diesel. If you didn't tow 10k or more on a regular basis I'd say go half ton and enjoy better gas mileage but you'd wear out a half ton towing that much all the time.
NonTypical
I was in the same boat. I had an 03 cummins that was turned up quite a bit. It had plenty of engine mods, internal and external. Needless to say, I went through my fair share of transmissions. But I loved that truck. It could pull down a house. The wife gave me so much grief over it for years to sell it. I finally did in April and bought a 14 Ram 1500. It is a very nice truck, but it will never be what my 03 was. I don't tow much anymore, but I still miss the torque of the diesel. I knew that I'd regret it the day I sold it. Lesson learned...
