Wife and I are looking to head up to Alexandria bay on our anniversary this year. So if you have been what did you think ? And any suggestions on places to eat, stay etc. haven’t been up to the thousand islands since I was a kid. We always went on the Canadian side though..

Beautiful. I am up there every year at least once. Alex bay is heavy tourist trap. Lots of small nick nack shops.

I recommend the clayton glass bottom boat tour. If the weather is decent and not stormy. So you can see better.

Restaurants are okay. Nothing mind blowing. I'd stick with the tavern.

A beautiful boat ride along American Island with the wife ( and two lines out trolling over the breaks just before the island for walleye and musky)  so romantic......

well of course the castle is there and thats a touristy thing but it is a good day .  And they have done a lot of renovations to it.  But I think they do a boat dinner cruise as well.  I did one on raquette lake a couple years ago and it was awesome.  For the more traditional romantic types....

Last time I was there was with a group of motorcyclists in the ‘80s and the streets were packed with bikers, many of the kind you might keep clear of. One of the guys we rode with wanted to strap his shotgun to his handlebars for the trip, and most filled their helmets with ice and hung them on the side of their bikes so they had cold beer for the ride up .Which since we stopped at each bar we passed , seemed unnecessary.

The cops shut down the street and my buddy lost a mirror and tail light to a night stick ....

I hear it’s much nicer now though .

We frequent the area. Clayton is a little bit more "grown up " than Alexandria Bay.

Uncle Sam Boat tours in Alex bay is a great way to spend a fair part of the day. They offer several different trips, check them out online. They all stop at Boldt Castle, which we always enjoy. It has been turned from a ruin almost to the point of needing dynamite to bringing a lot of it to the planned end state. It also is online to check out. Clayton is a nice riverside town to walk around, with a lot of waterfront. We love Bella's for lunch. the glass bottom tour is fun, but pretty limited what you can actually see. In Clayton the Clayton Boat Museum (or is it the Thousand Island Boat museum?) is a must see for lovers of old and historic boats. they also are online.

If you have an extra afternoon, drive up to Ogdensburg and go through the Frederick Remington Museum. Very interesting, a lot of his original work. You will leave a fan.  You definitely want to make reservations for a hotel this time of year. If you cant get one ( a distinct possibility this time of year) look into the Sacketts Harbor area, which is nearby and very nice and historical also. Watertown is about 30 minutes away, with lots of hotels too.  Remember you can no longer cross into Canada without a passport.

As to Sackets Harbor, my wife and I found little to do there and regretted staying there. YMMV of course.................

Lots to do in Alexandria Bay. I live about a half hour away so been many times. As others have mentioned there's uncle Sam boat tours where you can visit Boltd or Singer Castle which is a great time and highly recommended. There is a nice go-kart track and a 2 screen drive-in and places to rent boats or jetskis to view the beautiful 1000 islands on your own. The streets are lined with tourist shops that are open late into the night and if you love the night life this place is hoping during the summer. It draws a young crowd however and can get pretty wild at night. I myself prefer Clayton alot less to do there but a lot less populated and more relaxed. Clayton does have the antique boat museum which last I new offered antique boat rides. Clayton also has boat rentals and a nice golf course.

On a very hot summer day several years ago, we went out on one of the antique speedboat rides....25.oo apiece, but it was great! It made for a great break in the day. If I remember correctly, the boat we were on was a reproduction of  a mid 1939s Garwood speed boat, donated to the museum (which is how they get most of the boats).

Wellesley Island State Park (you cross the bridge from the mainland, toll) has a fantastic nature center with a lot of events, and extensive hiking trails, many along the river. It is another regular stop for us.
