I don't turkey hunt but every turkey ive seen shot was like 20 yards away , how does this happen?

How does bird shot kill someone?! That's a better question. Shit if you don't blow the birds head off it may get away even after taking a full blast

People have been killed  with cheapo airguns  . How does that happen .

A 3" load of #6's out of a 12 gauge with a turkey choke will have a very tight pattern for quite a few yards.  Might as well be a slug at close range.  Even at distance, one of those pellets hits the right spot and you're dead.

Sounds like it was unsafe gun handling at close range.
