5 years ago Cuomo decided people would die in a pandemic

Recommended Posts

He made the decision and ignored the facts.

In 2015, New York's Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo was faced with a decision: purchase a recommended 16,000 ventilators to add to the state's pandemic preparation stockpile, or spend the millions elsewhere. Cuomo chose to go the latter route, commissioning a task force led by his health commissioner, Howard Zucker, to come up with a rationing plan for using the state's existing ventilators should a pandemic scenario ever become reality. In other words, create a death panel that will determine who gets the state's limited number of ventilators.

Furthermore, instead of spending $576 million on 16,000 ventilators, Cuomo elected to waste $750 million of the state's budget on a solar-panel boondoggle known as the Buffalo Billion.

Now, five short years later, that unthinkable pandemic is here and New York, the state hardest hit by the China Virus, has been caught unprepared. Cuomo daily begs the federal government for more ventilators as if it was the job of the federal government to ensure that states were fully prepared for whatever crisis may come along.

Former New York Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey recently blasted Cuomo's decision to forgo the advice to stockpile ventilators, writing, "In New York, rationing ventilators should be unnecessary. The state knew of the shortage, had the money, and should have bought the lifesaving equipment, instead of making a plan on who should live or die."

What is truly amazing is that, despite his glaring mismanagement on an issue after direct warnings, Cuomo's favorability has increased during this crisis. There are now many Democrats calling for him to be the party's presidential nominee as opposed to the increasingly frail Joe Biden. Much of Cuomo's current popularity can be tied directly to a fawning media — led by his brother. As the Washington Examiner's Eddie Scarry observes, "It's weird watching CNN's Chris Cuomo interview his brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, almost every single night, but it's even more weird that the national media are treating the governor like a hero. He has done nothing remarkable in managing his state's response to the coronavirus." In fact, Cuomo's decision five years ago has likely cost New York lives.

Watching New York City's response to the coronavirus pandemic provides an enlightening display of leftist hypocrisy, as well as the brilliance of the Founders' federalist system of government.

While no one is to blame for the existence of the virus itself, we can certainly assess various leaders' responses to the outbreak. The media and the Democrats hold President Donald Trump to a very high standard — a standard to which they exempt themselves.

Among President Trump's most vocal critics has been New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. At 8.6 million residents, the Big Apple is America's largest city — more than twice the population of Los Angeles. And at more than 28,000 people per square mile, its residents are like sheep crammed in a pen, which has facilitated the rapid spread of the virus.

De Blasio's words and actions have been the epitome of progressive arrogance and bureaucratic incompetence, and the people of NYC — and all of America — are paying the price. NYC is home to nearly half of all U.S. coronavirus cases, with infection rates far higher than the rest of the country.

As New Yorkers realized the magnitude of the pandemic, and the ineptitude of the mayor's response, many fled the state, carrying the virus to other parts of the country.

Yet just two weeks ago, de Blasio was publicly contradicting his own health officials and resisting his aides' recommendation to shut down the city's schools and businesses. Many threatened to resign over his refusal, with one aid calling his actions "inexcusable and reckless."

On January 24, de Blasio told New Yorkers to "pursue their everyday activities and routines, but to remain aware of the facts about coronavirus." On January 28, de Blasio said, "What we now know is this virus was underestimated by the Chinese government. ... It's probably here already."

On February 13, he told the city, "[COVID-19] should not stop you from going about your life. It should not stop you from going to Chinatown and going out to eat." On March 2, he again told New Yorkers to "go on with your lives [and] get out on the town despite Coronavirus," even making movie recommendations.

On March 11, he said, "This disease, even if you were to get it, basically acts like a common cold or flu." That same day, after accusing President Trump of "minimizing ... a global pandemic," de Blasio advised people "to not avoid restaurants," adding, "If you're not sick, you should be going about your life."

Unbelievably, it took five more days before de Blasio announced the indefinite closing of all schools and nonessential businesses. Yet he still found time to go to his gym hours before it closed, a decision that infuriated his staffers. Meanwhile, he's released 650 inmates from Rikers Island prison to avoid spreading coronavirus among them.

By March 27, with refrigerated trailers being converted into makeshift morgues, an emergency field hospital constructed in Central Park, and NYC doctors complaining that "the system is overwhelmed" and describing the situation as "hell" and "worse than 9/11," de Blasio finally acquired some humility.

On Sunday, CNN's Jake Tapper pointed out de Blasio's harsh criticism of President Trump before asking if he accepts any blame for NYC's disastrous response, including his failure to order any protective gear for medical personnel until March 6. Naturally, de Blasio deflected, saying, "We should not be focusing ... on anything looking back on any level of government right now." Of course.

Moments later he admitted that President Trump and his team have been incredibly responsive to the mayor's pleas for help. This was just days after he went on TV claiming President Trump would not "lift a finger" to help NYC, an obvious lie meant to distract from his repeated statements and actions (or failures to act) leading directly to the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

De Blasio was right when he said COVID-19 "moves very, very fast, in a way none of us have ever experienced in our lives." Yet that reality has not stopped him and other Democrats from blasting President Trump at every turn. The hypocrisy is as galling as it is blatant.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said at his press conference today spoke in regards to the Corona virus we must follow the FACTS.  What?  Since when did Cuomo follow the facts?

Cuomo's whole gun control premise is based on ignorance, emotion and distorted information, while ignoring the facts.  Facts like the following that are the major root causes of violent crime:

1. Those involved in the distribution, sale and use of illegal drugs.

2. The violently mentally ill the government is unwilling or unable to institutionalize before they harm others.

Interesting...................makes me worry about who will be at the bottom of the list for a ventilator.

Cuomo said “Their problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves. Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.

You don't predict it, you prepare for it.  Because if it happens and you didn't, you're fugged like he is now.  You buy car insurance to be prepared right?  Never been in the boy scouts sluggo?

He made a typical politician move to buy votes with the money instead of preparing for a very real possibility.

We’ve had SARS, H1N1, and swine flu in the very recent past. NY, especially the city, being wildly unprepared is inexcusable

And all three (now four) started from the unregulated trade of animals in china. It’s time we sue them!

Governor Andrew Cuomo stated today while talking about the cost of ventilators that New York State is "broke"!  New York State is one of the highest taxing states. So Cuomo, where did the money go?

Later Cuomo was talking about the present budget up for vote.  Cuomo used the term "great budgets" to describe past budgets.  So lets go back to paragraph one above and ask Cuomo the question, where did the money go?  So Cuomo thinks budgets that are "great" that leave New York State "broke".

Strange how New York State politicians can on a regular basis find money for projects that benefit very few, but cannot find money that benefits everyone in preparation for a crisis.

From the actual report these fake stories cite.

More info here, https://www.factcheck.org/2020/03/trumps-misleading-ventilator-counter-punch-at-cuomo/

Q: Can the State stockpile as many ventilators as would be needed in a severe pandemic?

A: Even if New York State purchases additional ventilators, the demand would quickly outpace supply in a severe pandemic. No matter how many ventilators are available, in a severe pandemic there will be shortages because so many people will be sick at the same time. In addition, even with enough ventilators, a sufficient number of trained staff may not be available to operate them, particularly because health care workers will be among the ill.

Q: What can hospitals do to reduce the demand for ventilators in a pandemic?

A: Before the Guidelines are implemented, hospitals should practice “surge capacity” to reduce the need for ventilators. For example, elective procedures that require ventilators should be canceled and/or postponed during the period of emergency. For a moderate pandemic, surge capacity practices may be enough to meet the increased demand for ventilators. However, in the event of a severe pandemic, surge capacity measures would still fall short of addressing the anticipated demand for ventilators.

Fake News??  The report said the city wouldn't have enough ventilators in a severe pandemic.  This article says the report never specifically told Cuomo to buy more, so the fact he didn't, means he didn't waste money elsewhere when he could've bought ventilators, and even if he did there still wouldn't be enough.

So, basically they are saying nothing can be done that would keep ALL the victims from dying, so doing nothing is OK.

Cuomo wasn't told what to do by the report, so as leader of NY State, he's not to be blamed for not doing what needed to be done?  The directive is implied in that report and if he didn't know what needed to be done after he read it, he is no leader and not able to handle any crises.  Besides, his own administrative staff told him NY needed to do it.  He chose not to!

Leftist spin really has no shame.  It can defend anything leftists do with extreme faulty logic, and ignorant people will take it as gospel.  This is why the left is evil.  It defends government abuse that hurts the citizens.

These so called "Fact Checking" sites are leftist propaganda mills that never "fact check" anything leftist Democrats do.  The bias is as blatant as it is hypocritical.  The were created to keep the leftist voting base from knowing the truth about whatever they want to bury.  They pick out meaningless details in situations and try to make the clueless believe that makes everything false.

Ex:  Cuomo took his limo to a hospital and told everyone to kill all the virus victims.

Fact Check:  False.  He took an SUV.  He's a really great leader.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on Friday signed an executive order that would let the state take ventilators and personal protective equipment (PPE) from hospitals and medical institutions and redistribute them to places that are in dire need.

The governor said at his daily press conference that the National Guard would be mobilized to transport the ventilators to where they are most needed.

"We do not have enough ventilators. Period. I am signing an Executive Order allowing the state to take ventilators and redistribute to hospitals in need," Cuomo tweeted.

Just great , my daughters hospital has 90 is currently using 17 on corona PTs  and increasing daily , let’s hope when the we reach the apex of the curve we can get them back ...... Ya right .

He says the state will run out of ventilators in SIX DAYS, so I guess we’re screwed up,here .

Plus using the National Guard , no wonder he closed down the gun shops .

Makes perfect sense.

Take them from people he knows won't vote for him and use them where people will.

Remember the charge about Democrats forming "death panels"?  Lord, how they were offended.  Well, that's what he's doing.

While they sing "Let's come together" and say "We're all in this together" they're putting a knife in our backs.

The point is, remember this on election day.  People have very short memories and continue to re-elect these bums.  Plus, unless people protest vigorously right now, it will continue.

These so called "leaders" are anything but.  They coast through office hoping they will never be challenged, and if they are, they play a game of "distract and deflect".  This has got to stop if we expect to survive the aftermath of this virus crises.

I'm pretty sure a few members on this site do vote for Cuomo, and many do support him as well.  Maybe these facts, which have been attacked as "fake news", will educate some of them and convince them not to vote for him next time.  It's very unlikely, I know.  His anti-gun, anti-business, high tax agenda hasn't been enough to do it for them.

Even the opposition doesn't have all the info they could use to talk to others about why this man needs to be sent packing.  This gives them information to use when talking with others who don't agree.  Isn't that what this political forum is for?

Personally, I want this man removed from office as soon as possible, and I base that on all of the damage he has done to this state since he's been in office.  He will continue to damage the state as long as he is able to.  He's biased, leftist, oppressive, dictatorial, dishonest, hateful and corrupt.  There's plenty of data to prove each one of those descriptive adjectives as well.  He's even using this virus crises for political purposes and putting a lot of NY residents at risk while doing it.  What I would like to discover is, what is his end game?

Opinions aren’t facts.

The entire point of your thread was based on fake news that Cuomo was told to purchase vents. The report never said that and showed what would happen when a catastrophic illness strikes. If you bothered to read and understand the actual report instead of opinion pieces designed to fire you up you would be better off.

None of this changes the fact that neither state or federal government are equipped to deal with such events.

And all this time guys like you want less government are now clamoring for more including martial law, though you may not realize it because you haven’t read a internet opinion piece that tells you what to think yet.

You nailed it right there.  I can't stand to look at Cuomo's face, but those who think that Trump is showing exemplary leadership in this mess or that the Fed's are somehow doing a great job are sadly mistaken.

I actually think if the feds took better control the states wouldn’t be able to make terrible decisions like they are (redistribution of vents).

PS Anyone want to know why there aren’t vents available from the companies that sell or rent them to hospitals?  Because they sent everything that they had overseas to the highest bidder knowing the US would need them.
