Don't let the green license plate fool you

Hello NY Hunters,

I will be hunting NY state for the first time very soon. I thought that instead of just reading all of your very helpful posts I'd join the forum and participate.

If my research so far is any inclination I'll be hunting in the state for some time to come.

I am from VT, that's the reference to the green license plate....

I hunt all of my state's seasons and enjoy turkey, waterfowl, grouse, and whitetail with archery rifle and muzzle loader. I will be hunting NY to extend my hunting opportunities and calendar.

I have listened to far too many accounts of positive hunting experiences, both in the field and in the communities, in NY from my friends over the years to not finally give this a try.

I have compiled everything I can from those stories, the NY Environmental Conservation website and some calls to the ECOs where I'd like to hunt.

So without further to do, I am off to read what you all have had to say.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Eric

Hello Eric, good luck and remember that you can't bring a NY deer into VT unless you follow the new CWD regs.

Not breaking stones, only trying to save you fines, tickets and problems. :)

"In order to legally transport into Vermont and possess big game that was legally taken in another state or country, a person must keep the tag that is required by the state or country where the big game was taken. Each package of meat must be marked with the name of the person who took the animal, tag number, date, and state or country of origin.

H2.5 Rules on importing and possession of deer or elk from areas with Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and captive hunt areas or farms:

It is illegal to import or possess legally taken deer or elk, or parts of deer or elk, from states and Canadian provinces that have had Chronic Wasting Disease, or from captive hunt or farm facilities with the following exceptions:

  • Meat that is cut up, packaged and labeled with hunting license information and not mixed with other deer or elk during processing
    • Meat that is boneless
      • Hides or cape with no part of the head attached
        • Clean skull-cap with antlers attached
          • Antlers with no other meat or tissue attached
            • Finished taxidermy heads
              • Upper canine teeth with no tissue attached

As of 2010, the following states and Canadian provinces had found CWD in their deer or elk populations: New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Utah, Illinois, Kansas, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

The purpose of this regulation is to protect Vermont's deer population from diseases that could be harmful, including Chronic Wasting Disease."

now get out there and bone out some deer!

Welcome to the site. And after reading all the rules I've determined those VT officials sure are a funny lot!

Do they really think...........

LOL if deer start growing these I give up and hunt ducks!

I'm a new hunter (this past season) and new to the state (this past year).  Stationed at and living on West Point, in Orange County.  Hunted my butt off this past season with a bow and some good friends that showed me the ropes and brought me out to some drives.  Got 2 does back to back on the second to the last day of bow season here, and am doing my reading, research, scouting and practicing so I will be ready to go next year.

Found the site today trying to determine if "Deer Cane" and other attractants are illegal (and now know they are) in the state, and am glad I found the forum.

Hello all. I live in New Yrok city, but have a house in Sulivan County where I spend 3 months a year. I love the outdoors. Grew up in Weschester and went hunting with my dad as a kid. Looking to get back into hunting and shooting. I have been target shooting casually with a 30-06, and a .22 rifle with scope. Also have a 12ga for home defense and skeet. Can anyone give me some suggestions on where I can do some target shooting with my 30-06?

Good afternoon to all fellow NYS Hunters. My name is Paul. I'm a city boy from the Bronx who loves the outdoors. I just started Bow Hunting, I currently own a Bowtech Assasin & practice at Pro-line archery lanes in Queens. I also own an Excalibur Vortex crossbow & am looking forward to going afield with it. Anyone know of an outdoor archery range in NYS that will allow me to sight in my crossbow?
Unfortunately for this new Bow season I have only been able to go out Hunting once & that was yesterday. I went out to Sterling Forest. I was Hunting between the sterling ridge (blue trail) & w. valley (green trail) above the Bare rock (orange trail) & although I did not Harvest any deer I seen about eight in total. One I know was a buck that could have been taken in the Antler restriction area. None came in close enough range for me to take a shot but I really enjoyed myself. I also seen 1 coyote & numerous squirrels. Along my trekking to find a good tree to climb with my lone wolf stand I found some fresh black bear tracks.
I also plan on Hunting in Suffolk County & have permission to hunt private property in Westchester. I look forward to being a member of this community & Thanks to all in advance
