  2. The answer to that is they don't do anything different, really. I don't think there is a state out there east of the Mississippi with such a vast area similar to that description in land size. In that part of NY, it really is the proving ground, and its a reason most people refer to it as "great challenge for a wily mature buck." Remember, all of the National Parks out west would fit within the AP. It's very unique in a sense. More and More, NY should be broken and managed into threes - Western/Central, Dacks, and Catskills on downstate (with distinctions for LI, etc.). Heck, I'd even go for two, including the Dacks and W/C NY if NYC and it's surrounding counties let us form West New York state, lol.

  4. After seeing this thread, I had to give it a shot. The only thing I did different from the recipe mentioned was that I browned the roast on all sides in a little bit of oil before I put it in crock pot. For seasoning I used salt pepper and garlic powder. simple. I also used sweet baby rays sauce. came out excellent. definitely a keeper of a recipe. Also, just wanted to add that for a readily availible "store-bought" bbq sauce, Sweet baby rays is pretty darned good. I make my own often, but its time consuming and ingredient heavy. the sweet baby rays is a nice compromise.

  6. Meat has a smell. It smells like meat ...... it's unique and doesn't smell like anything else. Rotten meat also has a distinctive smell, and you ain't going to like it if and when you ever smell it. I'll admit that once someone puts the suggestion in your head, all of a sudden you will be smelling all kinds of things, but believe me, if the meat is bad, you won't have to be asking about it. 55 degrees for a couple hours while butchering is not going to make the meat go bad.

  9. Protesters need to be aware of antis who may try to infiltrate just to make them look bad. I can see antis joining in and pretending to be part of the protest only to break out with signs that threaten politicians lives or read something like "machine guns for everyone" "kill them all" just to make gun owners look like the nut job hicks they all paint us to be.

  11. well put Doc, i wasnt going to refer to Doe's other posts on here with others but thats what i was thinking... and for the record Doe, i have NO problems or issues with you what so ever and always got along with you on here. I was indeed taken back to see "i make you sick". i dont think the punishment fir the crime for a response like that. i think topics like this should be talked about and not swept under the rug. Im not trying to be a Consp. theorist here but i think we would all be worse off if NO ONE in this country questioned things they see on the news no matter how small or how tragic.

  12. There already was... In order to gun hunt I had to take a gun safety course to hunt with my gun In order to bow hunt I had to take a bow hunters course to hunt with my bow For the last 2 years in order to hunt with a cross bow all that was required was a gun safety course... If they want cross bows in archery EVERYONE that does not have a bow hunting course should have to take the same two day course all us other bow hunters had to take inorder to go out in the woods and hunt with a bow...be it vertical or cross bow...

  14. i never said the shooting never happened... i simply stated that i had questions while watching things unfold on the news and some things did not make sense to me what so ever. Ironically, some of the things that stuck out in my head coincide with views brought up in the video. Call me what you want... the more you speak the more unintelligent you sound at times. your entitled to believe what you want and so am I weather i make you sick or not i leave name calling out when making points or speaking in general. If you have no questions after seeing that event take place then so be it. I do and apparently i am not the only one. Id like to trust the things i see and hear but unfortunately Doe, in the crazy world we live in today we cant. I dont need to drive to the school to see anything, like i said before with all these crazy accusations made no parents want to come fourth and put anything to rest?

  17. I think the earlier the better given one constraint. It varies with each kid on wheter they are emotionally ready for all the parts of hunting. There may be 12 year olds that are ready and some that might have difficulty with things like the blood and a possible flopping deer. As a parent we have to curb our desire to share our sport and let the child steer the level of envolvment. (did that sound to head shrinky...lol) We have had other posts here on the evolution of a hunter and I think it really is true. I think many of us like taking on new challenges and as we develop we like the challenges to get harder. I can see kids getting hooke on archery with a crossbow and then developing the skills and wanting a tougher challenge and moving to a compound. I can also see the next move being a longbow. As age and physical issues make that difficult I can also see regressing to a compound again and then back to a crossbow. All in the light of enjoying our sport. I see the same thing happeing with a gun. I actually carried my pistol for a lot of the season this year. I was actually able to take a nice buck and a doe with it. It felt better than if I had used the rifle or shotgun (but I still carried them many times this year and conditions warranted). I see it a a tool and no tool will make the hunter. an unethical "slob: with be an unethical "slob" no matter what they carry, which is what I think WNY was trying to say. Let them be as accurate with the little effort they are willing to put in.

  20. Bingo! The actual root ot the anti-Xbow arguement. Infringing on their time in the woods and opportunities on their deer. Don't recall this much controversy when in-line ML were allowed in the SZ regular season or compound bows included during bow season or now the introduction of rifles in certain areas of the SZ during regular season. Just something about the mentality of diehard bow hunters I don't understand...? BTW -Love my bow hunting & have for 40+ years, but I don't feel I have any exclusive rights to any season or specific deer. How in the world do you think this is different than a Xbow??????

  22. Why not just make it simple? Dont you think the laws are complicated enough as they are? Crossbows dont have much of an advantage over a vertical bow anyway, and they have some disadvantages as well. They kill in the same manor, at the same distances, and are already another form of archery equipment, so whats the big deal? You still have to get close enough to the deer, which is half or more of the game in archery hunting. Also, think about this. There are bunches of people out there each year, that do not practice properly with their bow, they dont put the time in, they dont practice real world type shots (out of elevated positions, etc) and take bad shots on deer, wounding them, losing them, etc. They have lots of reasons for not putting the time in, some are just too busy with family, work, etc, and others are just lazy. Rather than have them out there wounding deer, I would rather see them have a form of archery tackle that will allow them a better chance at making a good shot.

  26. Best way to start off. Can't imagine being required to have trigger restraint, even with youth exclusions. Nothing is better for foundational hunting experience than bloodletting.

  27. That mark is over the spine. The spine dips at the front shoulder quite a bit, and the shoulder seats higher than the spine. It may have even been plausible he hit offside shoulder paddle. Arrows penetrate paddles pretty well, it's the knuckle that kills arrow performance, and his shot is WAY higher than the knuckle. The offside blade may have been able to stop the arrow after cutting through some backstrap and narrowly missing the spinal system. How much arrow penetration? Big difference between 6 and 12. (That's what she said?).

  34. That is their twisted version of thinking that they are doing something about violence. Really .... They think they are doing something useful, and it makes them feel good. That is the sorry state of public thinking these days. Problems don't have to be really addressed. All we need is the perception that something is being done. That's the same mentality that produces the NYS gun laws that were just recently passed. We've even seen some of that kind of thinking on this forum in recent weeks. It doesn't matter whether the actions represent anything useful, just that it makes us feel good and provides the perception that "something" is being done. These school official are of the same mentality.

  35. Everything I have read shows that the ban on ar's is immediate and the mag restriction goes into effect April 15th. As for the law affecting law enforcement, US Bill HR218 signed by President Bush protects all law enforcement and qualified retired law enforcement from any state laws. Federal protections supersede state law. They are allowed to carry in any state as long as their qualifications are up to date. Finally, don't expect the crime rate to drop in any major city in NY. The cities with the highest homicide rates are always linked to economic conditions and not the gun laws in that specific state. Oakland California and Camden NJ consistently rank number 1 and number 2 in the country for the most homicides. NJ and CA have the strictest gun laws in the country.
