The 4th is with the family, the 5th at a Hunter Hayes/Lonestar concert then up to camp for 6 days with my girls. Campfires, fishing, shooting and more of the great stuff we do up there! I hope everyone enjoys the 4th, be safe!1 point

No, I haven't heard anything about this. Frankly, it isn't a big issue with me. I really don't think you would see a whole lot of guys flocking out to hunt them. Hell there's hardly anyone hunting them in the season they have now, and there is an added incentive of prime fur prices during that season. I honestly don't think there is a whole lot of interest in coyote hunting, and I seriously doubt that opening the season year around will have any change in the population at all. As for myself, I have no interest in shooting them and leaving them to rot in the woods. It's probably the trapper in me coming out that hates to see any natural resource wasted. Yes, I realize that there are places in the state where it is theorized that coyotes are having a severe negative impact on the deer population. And I will admit that if we had that condition in my area, I would most likely have a much different attitude.1 point

back when feeding deer was legal, I could go months without putting food out, and as soon as a pile of corn was dumped on the lawn we would have deer coming in all times of day to eat......maybe not mature bucks, but does and smaller bucks came in like crazy..........it would get to the point where if we saw a doe near the house, I could walk past her, go to the shed, get the food and dump the corn 20 yards from her...........to say it offers no advantage is silly, especially if your looking to shoot any deer.1 point

I'm not sure what the big deal is for these critters when it comes to minerals, but I do remember as a kid almost getting trampled to death each time I had to dump the minerals in the trough for the sheep. They really didn't care what or who was in their way when I came in with that stuff. In fact it was pretty tough just trying to get to the feeder. I guess I wouldn't be too surprised if deer didn't have the same appetite for those same kinds of goodies.1 point

Then there's always the threat that after one year they don't renew the law! Wouldn't that be a bummer...............................................1 point

I would guess that feeding / baiting is an epidemic in NY, unless there are some other allegations to go along with the feeders, they can't won't or can't look into every complaint.....we have a neighbor who calls on anyone about anything, we've always been visited by the NY State PD, DEC or whoever, looking into everything he calls about..........all unfounded BS, but they say they have to follow up on all calls.1 point

how would some of you react if a neighboring landowner was baiting heavily to the point that it affected your hunting? it's easy to say mind your own business, until it affects you directly.1 point
-
100% agree. I will tell someone that baiting is illegal, hell, I may even bust their chops about it, but thats about as far as I go. If they get caught, I wont feel bad for them. Gander Mountain usually has a board for posting up trail cam pics in the store, starting around this time of the year. You can see all kinds of pics of deer eating out of troughs and feeders there. DEC could probably spend a little time watching who puts the pics up on there and catch the guys red handed, but they dont have the staff to do so. Honestly, I would much rather see them bust guys for outright poaching, taking deer out of season, jack lighting, etc than have them play salt-lick cop.1 point

I'm of the mind set that if it is legal, then so be it. Does that mean I partake? No. But, I'm not looking down on Joe Hunter for using a feeder legally. I just mark that spot off the list to hunt because most people who feed have trouble actually killing the mature buck they think shows up there. You can in most cases eliminate that area as a place to potentially harvest a mature buck. I hunt a state where baiting is legal. I have, however, used mineral licks to census the deer and buck quality in the area before. Hunting over mineral licks is pointless. The landowner runs a feeder, but that's not where the mature bucks usuallty show up. Sure, if you want to kill a doe or young bucks. Hunting means different things to different people. It's also practiced differently in different parts of the country and world. Most African hunts are fenced-in for pete's sake.1 point

Also, supporters of the 5.56 when they were trying to introduce it to the military theorized that the true objective in combat was not to kill the enemy soldier but rather to eliminate them from the battlefield. They believed and proven to be true that wounding a soldier eliminated two enemy soldiers instead of one. The one that was shot and the one that had to carry that soldier to safety. The 5.56 also allowed soldiers to carry much more rounds than larger calibers. The arguments over the last 3 rifles on the list was because they played their roles in controversial wars. There are large number of people who felt America should not have been involved in the Vietnam, Iraq, or Afghanistan wars. Especially true of Vietnam since the US were never attacked or threatened by Vietnam so those wars didn't have as much of an impact on American Independence as say the Revolutionary War.1 point

Well there you have it! I don't suspect Eddie walks into the hardware store and bust balls of folks who buy box cutters and the legality of their use in highjacking planes. Probably doesn't feel the need to educate customers at the local grocery store purchasing beer and the consequences of drunk driving. And one last example... he probably doesn't wait at the pharmacy and run the old folks through the wringer when they check out with their oxycontin and loritabs about what will happen if they're caught selling them on the street. I could care less about the baiting issues brought up in the original post. When folks don't mind their own business, they may not like the responses they get in regaurd to their intrusive BS accusations. Guys that go out looking for trouble are usually the first to cry foul when they find some. Don't be that guy that goes out looking for a pile of poop to stick his finger in, and then complain that the chit stinks!1 point

Lol me too! God help the guy shooting a full auto 30-061 point

We used to swim in the local creek across the road. When we got finished, we would get busy pulling all the blood-suckers off out feet and legs. That would absolutely gross me out today, but back then we didn't think anything about it. By the way, that picture looks like there should be some good fishing there.1 point

That 338-06 would certainly smack you more than the 260/7mm-08 choices and won't kill any better. Might as well ENJOY your bench time!! Not really much difference in the two, 260/7mm-08, really just some minor high end/low end bullet weight choices. Win/win....1 point

I got plates on the way now, as easy as it is I should have done it sooner, Oh well live and learn lol1 point

Always seems that the people who complain the most and loudest about "hoarders" whether it be ammo, soup, plywood or TP are the ones who didn't have the foresight to put some aside when it was cheap and available. Not directed at anyone in particular, more of a general observation.1 point
